On January 12, 1996, Hans Rudolf Guggisberg, professor emeritus of the University of Basel, died unexpectedly of a heart attack. On December 15, 1995, he had given his farewell lecture at the University in which he defined himself as a "student of history," as someone for whom personal as well as professional life was as much a process of continued learning as it was of teaching.
