For many Americans, scholar and lay alike, western Europe consists of the Big Three, England, Germany, and France. Monographs in English about the history and culture of Europe typjcally pertain only to them. On occasion another region or nation is included, but not unless "important" events took place there. Italy, for instance, only "existed" during the Renaissance, the Risorgimento, and again under Mussolini. Smaller countries like Switzerland, Portugal, or Denmark often do not get mentioned at all even when part of "world historical" phenomena.
