[Review] Antiracist Education: From Theory To Practice By Julie Kailin., Laura Stivers Jul 2005

[Review] Antiracist Education: From Theory To Practice By Julie Kailin., Laura Stivers

Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Although I help students to see the complexity of racism and how their actions or inactions can further individual and institutional racism, this book pushed me to think more deeply about the racism in my own university and classes and how I can more intentionally pursue antiracist education. The book is written for primary and secondary education, but it is useful for college and seminary professors in religion as well.

Despite its rich and deepening panoply of empirical support, evolutionary theory continues to generate widespread concern. Some of this concern can be attributed to misunderstandings of the original concept, some to unfamiliarity with its current trajectories, and some to strongly held fears that it strips the human of cherished attributes. In this essay I seek to deconstruct such misunderstandings, lift up current concepts of what evolution entails, and address some of the existential issues it generates.

A Process Of Restoration For Clergy Guilty Of Sexual Misconduct, Carol Hutchinson May 2005

A Process Of Restoration For Clergy Guilty Of Sexual Misconduct, Carol Hutchinson

Faculty Publications - Department of Professional Studies

Sexual misconduct on the part of clergy is not a new phenomenon. Nevertheless the Church in general lacks a concept of restoration that provides spiritual and emotional healing of an offender within the context of the redemptive community of faith. This dissertation is intended to demonstrate how Scripture, church history, theology and psychology support restoration of fallen clergy. The dissertation will go on then to describe what a process of restoration would include.

The dissertation begins and ends with case studies. Both cases deal with actual events though names and some details have been changed. The first case demonstrates some …

Preachers can and must cultivate storytelling skills. They may find help in a Narration Worksheet charting the essential elements of story: plot, setting, character, point of view, and unity. A Plot Movements Worksheet helps keep the narrative flowing from situation, through stress and searching to solution and a new situation.

Faith And Learning: A Case Study Of The Ouachita Baptist University Student Body, Amy Michelle Packer Jan 2005

Faith And Learning: A Case Study Of The Ouachita Baptist University Student Body, Amy Michelle Packer

Honors Theses

With each new generation of students the Christian liberal arts university faces anew the question of how its faith tradition will influence its level of academic excellence. This question becomes increasingly challenging as society becomes more secularized. When the first ' universities were established in America, religion was considered the appropriate foundation of education. The work of George Marsden has shown, however, that by their very structure these universities would guarantee the eventual exclusion of religion altogether? Many in the church related university have similarly excluded religion from the academic environment. In the shadow of increasingly secular universities, the church-related …

Sacrifice, The Common Good, And The Catholic Lawyer, John J. Coughlin Jan 2005

Sacrifice, The Common Good, And The Catholic Lawyer, John J. Coughlin

Journal Articles

For some two decades since I entered law school, the connection between the philosophy of the human person and law has been of comparative interest to me. My interest was stimulated in no small part by the late Pope John Paul II, who urged that canon law reflect the essential elements of what it means to be human. Comparative legal study of the canon law of the Catholic Church with the law of the liberal state has convinced me of the importance of the understanding of the human person that underpins the law. Canon law and the Catholic intellectual tradition …

Is Self-Love Always A Vice? An Edwardsian Critique Of Reinhold Niebuhr, Kevin Twain Lowery Jan 2005

Is Self-Love Always A Vice? An Edwardsian Critique Of Reinhold Niebuhr, Kevin Twain Lowery

Faculty Scholarship – Theology

Reinhold Niebuhr is often criticized for the negative attitude he has toward self-interest. The author contends that the writings of Jonathan Edwards, especially his understanding of natural morality, can form a counter-argument against Niebuhr’s claims. After examining both views, an attempt is made to show that Edwards can easily withstand some of the more prominent critiques made against Niebuhr.

Living Waters: An Invitation To Contemplative Spirituality For The Quail Springs Church Of Christ, Wyatt E. Fenno Jan 2005

Living Waters: An Invitation To Contemplative Spirituality For The Quail Springs Church Of Christ, Wyatt E. Fenno

Doctor of Ministry Theses

This project addressed an acknowledged need for ministry action to promote and facilitate communal spiritual formation in the present and future life of the Quail Springs Church of Christ. The focus of the project was to present a model of contemplative spirituality determined to be accessible to the ministry context at Quail Springs. In addressing the problem of community fragmentation at Quail Springs, this model was offered as a means of grace to deepen faith and strengthen relationships in church life at Quail Springs. A pilot group of six women and six men served as the working group for this …
