Transforming Womanhood In Louisa Ermelino’S The Sisters Mallone, Rosa De Angelis

Most Italians thought of themselves, and some still do, in terms of provincial identities. In America, they tended to settle in large Italian colonies, duplicating the customs and traditions of their particular Italian town or village (Mangione and Morreale 130). So it was not unusual for people from one particular town or village to be housed in one tenement or on one block. Family and their village of origin were very important. Everything in their lives was based on one or the other, for those were the things that provided safety and security. Home and family were the only respites …

Cleopatra: The Defiance Of Feminine Virtue, Gelsey Randazzo

English Senior Seminar Papers

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph:

William Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra is a tragic love story that interlaces empire and political responsibility with lust and licentious sexuality. Throughout the play, Cleopatra represents otherness. She is a woman in power, of darker complexion, and is the embodiment Orient Empire. Cleopatra is belittled, humiliated, and degraded throughout the entirety of the play. These harsh representations, along with her highly sexualized and manipulative nature, make it difficult for her to succeed in a patriarchal society. Originally published in 1616, shortly after the death of Queen Elizabeth, it is …

A Memoir Of Uncertainty:Tim O’Brien’S Vietnam Narratives, Mitchell Bailey

English Senior Seminar Papers

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

Uncertainty is human. It is part of our nature. As unique individuals, we see the world differently than those around us, sometimes subtly; in other cases fundamentally, different. Uncertainty deals with the way we understand and interpret information; experiences, education, emotions, and biases affect comprehension. Uncertainty displays itself in the decision-making process. (Cohen 40) Humans react to provocations much differently than others. Decisions are based on the nature of these internal and external impressions. All warfare is uncertain because it is human based. As humans, it is our very …

Throughout Daniel Defoe’s novel Moll Flanders, the title character devotes her entire life to achieving wealth and social status. It is clear that Moll achieves her desires of being a gentlewoman, yet her identity is constantly changing throughout the novel. She is affected by every person and experience she comes across questioning whether or not her lifestyle and decisions were the right ones, and often debate Defoe’s ambiguous description of his title character that represents a woman different than any other woman in the traditional norms of eighteenth-century England. …

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

Nella Larsen’s Passing introduces two African American women on a quest for an integrated identity. Irene and Clare are two pale-skinned, childhood friends who are light enough to pass for white. Passing is a work concerned with the representation and construction of race. Clare Kendry passes for white and she “whitens” her lifestyle by adjusting her clothes, behavior, gestures, and etiquette while resisting and denying any existence of her black culture. Irene on the other hand, lives as a black woman but remains a part of the black community …

Class Structure In Great Expectations: Dictate Your Own Fate, Alicia Upham

English Senior Seminar Papers

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

The formation of class structure is often dependent upon a set of criteria that reveals divisions between individuals. The old model of class ranking within England during the nineteenth century favored a rigid structure reliant on occupational differences. A new model began to take shape during the end of the century that relied on the morality and character of individuals. The new model provided the opportunity for mobility and achievement of new roles through self-determination. Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations portrays both models of class structure within the nineteenth century …
