Using Self-Assessment Checklists To Make English Language Learners Self-Directed, Masoud Mahmoodi-Shahrebabaki

Self-directed learning (SDL) has recently gathered momentum among EFL/ESL researchers. Within the SDL framework, learners are responsible to monitor and evaluate their own learning. Student selfassessment can play a crucial role in helping learners become more dedicated and motivated. This study aimed at examining the role of filling out self-assessment checklists by 115 Iranian EFL learners over three successive semesters with reference to the role of gender and level of proficiency. Three classes filled out a standard weekly self-evaluation checklist while three corresponding classes passed the same courses simultaneously without filling out any checklist. The result showed that there is …

Unlike other discourses, legal discourse should be very simple, straightforward and unambiguous, and so should legal translation. However, legal translation implies multifarious challenges. Though, it is still under-research in the Arab World and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). The present article attempts to shed some light on the development of the language of legal texts in the OPT as illustrated in the study of three marriage contracts representing three sporadic periods of time— post-First World War, post-Israeli occupation to Palestine and post-foundation of Palestinian National Authority (PNA). The rationale beyond this selection is that the OPT has witnessed a political …

In this essay C. C. Wharram argues that Terence's concept of translation as a form of “contamination” anticipates recent developments in philosophy, ecology, and translation studies. Placing these divergent fields of inquiry into dialogue enables us read Terence's well-known statement “I am a human being — I deem nothing human alien to me” as a recognition of the significance of the “nothing human” for contemporary humanism. By recasting Terence's human/foreign pairing through Freud's concept of the uncanny, Wharram draws a parallel between a “nothing human” that is radically interior to the human subject and an exterior agency of “nothing human” …

In diverse ways, the scholars collected in this volume make compelling cases for expanding the repertoire of texts worthy of study in English classrooms to include translations. In this preface, I briefly introduce each of these six interventions, while examining how and why translation changes—or might prompt us to change—the way we approach the teaching of texts of British Romanticism in particular, and literature in general, within a planetary context. The scholars collected here reflect this global framework, not simply in that they work and teach in five different countries spanning four continents, but also in that they address planetary …

Created to comment on Antebellum and Reconstruction literature, the tragic mulatto concept is habitually applied to eras beyond the 19th century. After the turn of the century, the tragic mulatto has become an end rather than a means to questioning racist and abolitionist agendas. Rejecting the pathetic, selfish, and self-destructive traits inscribed by the tragic mulatto label, this dissertation uses geographic, cultural, and racial boundary crossing to theorize a rereading of the mixed race character of Harlem Renaissance literature. Focusing on instances of train, automobile, and boat travel, the study establishes a distinct relationship between the character, transportation, and technology …

Ten years ago, machine translation (MT) was very much a niche technology for translation professionals. MT tools were expensive, supported only a small number of language pairs, and did not play nice with many standard translation tools. Today, MT is available either for free or at very low cost, in thousands of language combinations, and many translation memory systems offer integrated MT functionality. In other words, MT has evolved by leaps and bounds. As the number of translation professionals who post-edit raw MT has increased dramatically over the past 10 years, the big question is whether developments in post-editing have …
