Abstract The present paper is designed to shed light on the intricacies of English- Arabic subtitling. The data comprises a video clip of an interview with Mr. Galloway conducted by the Sky News TV station. The sample of the study consists of twenty MA translation students enrolled in the second semester of the academic year 2008/2009 at Al-Quds University. The paper reveals that subtitling students are faced with several linguistic, cultural and technical problems which may jeopardise communication, thought to be crucial for target audience. The study concludes with some pedagogical implications that will hopefully help subtitling students deal with …

Word sketches are one-page automatic, corpus-based summaries of a word's grammatical and collocational behaviour. They were first used in the production of the Macmillan English Dictionary (Rundell 2002). At that point, word sketches only existed for English. Today, the Sketch Engine is available, a corpus tool which takes as input a corpus of any language and corresponding grammar patterns and which generates word sketches for the words of that language. It also automatically generates a thesaurus and 'sketch differences', which specify similarities and differences between near-synonyms. A web corpus of Polish was morpho-syntactically tagged and loaded into the Sketch Engine. …
“The Given Note” Traditional Music, Crisis And The Poetry Of Seamus Heaney, Seán Crosson Dr.
“The Given Note” Traditional Music, Crisis And The Poetry Of Seamus Heaney, Seán Crosson Dr.

This paper proposes that at a time when Northern Ireland increasingly descended into civil strife and crisis, Seamus Heaney looked to landscape, and to a lesser but comparable, extent traditional music, to articulate a distinctive voice, beyond the claims of tradition and community, ‘to use the first person singular’ as he has remarked, ‘to mean me and my lifetime’. Indeed, Heaney has faced a crisis of identity that has preoccupied Irish poets since at least the time of Yeats, a crisis brought on by the discontinuity in the Irish literary tradition, by an unresolved postcolonial condition and a struggle between …

Statistics continue to show that quantifiable disadvantages still exist today between Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations in Australia, collectively referred to in common vernacular as ‘the gap’. This situation may be understood as an ongoing ‘echo factor’ of colonisation, but when ‘the gap’ is considered as metaphor, it may represent the ‘space of disconnect’ between Indigenous and non-Indigenous knowledges and ‘alternative ways of knowing the world.’ By exploring this space through a lens of reflexivity, this thesis will consider not only the links between Australia’s colonial past and status as a settler nation but the potential of reflexivity as a decolonising …

From Karen To Keisha: The New Black Names, David L. Cooper

Shakespeare wrote: "A rose called by any other name would smell as sweet." What's in a name? Everything and nothing. When I first started teaching, over twenty years ago, most students had either family names or biblical names such as Rebecca, Anne, Carolyn, Andrew, John, or James. This was irrespective of race or class. For the most part black and white American students had the same names. Then, in the 1990s I started to see names that I had difficulty pronouncing, the spellings were not phonetic, and apostrophes appeared in strange places e.g. La'Tonya. Despite the nonstandard spellings the names …

This collection of essays addresses poetic and critical responses to the various crises encountered by contemporary writers and our society. The essays included discuss a range of issues from the holocaust, the Troubles in Northern Ireland and their aftermath and the war on terror to the ecological crisis, poetry's relationship to place and questions of cultural and national identity. What are the means available to poetry to address the various crises it faces, and how can both poets and critics meet the challenges posed by society and the literary community? How can poetry justify its own role as a meaningful …
