Many high school and college composition students have misused formulaic organizational structures, most conspicuously the five-paragraph theme, as invention tools. This misappropriation comes from teacher and student tendencies to oversimplify both the processes of writing instruction and its practice into countable and inflexible forms. In order to help students move towards improved invention models that respond to the overall rhetorical situation, this dissertation offers two new models of invention, the x, y thesis and the argument guide models. The following article is a case study of Lydia, an eleventh-grade blogger. I observed her writing in Honor’s English class, and I obtained samples of her previous essays. I wanted to see if there is a pattern in the writing style of her blogs and her inclass essays. I found that blogging may influence her language, but the format of her inclass writing tends to be dictated by teachers. However, in her blogs, the author appears more open with format and style. Determining Quality Through Audience, Genre, And The Rhetorical Canon: Imagining A Biography Of Eudora Welty For Children, Cindy Sheffield Michaels

While numerous studies on academic writers composing for non-academic audiences exist, few if any studies address academic writers composing biographies for children. This self-reflective case study of a Eudora Welty biography for children provides insight into how an academic writer can effectively write in a specific genre (biography) for a specific audience (children) and into practical rhetorical choices such as choosing photographs and designing page layouts. The study also offers triangulated data regarding essential criteria of quality children’s literature as identified by experts in the field (editors, publishers, award committee members, scholars, and authors).
