Tomboys Are Girls, Too!: A Study Of Sibling Relationships In Caddie Woodlawn, Julia G. Kicinski Apr 2020

Tomboys Are Girls, Too!: A Study Of Sibling Relationships In Caddie Woodlawn, Julia G. Kicinski

English Seminar Capstone Research Papers

Readers can understand the sibling relationships present in Carol Ryrie Brink’s novel, Caddie Woodlawn, by studying the main character’s tomboy personality. Many scholars read this character through a feminist lens, treating her solely as a fictional character. However, this paper approaches the character from a nonfictional perspective to study how Caddie as a tomboy relates to her strong relationship with her brothers. This paper takes the definition of “tomboy” into account, as well as the psychology behind the development of both strong and weak sibling relationships, to determine whether Caddie’s tomboyism developed because of her strong relationship with her …

The Collaborative Function Of Verbal Aspect And Aktionsart: A Distributional Analysis Of English Verb-Types, Marc A. Agee Apr 2018

The Collaborative Function Of Verbal Aspect And Aktionsart: A Distributional Analysis Of English Verb-Types, Marc A. Agee

Linguistics Senior Research Projects

This paper reviews literature in aspect studies from modern linguistics and Biblical language studies and proposes syntheses of multiple definitions given for these often-confusing verbal categories as the discussion has progressed from the Nineteenth Century to the present day. To inform these definitions, key studies such as Bache (1982), Comrie (1981), Lyons (1977), and Porter (1989) are consulted. In addition to suggesting definitions for these, this paper also discusses the best way to understand aktionsart as it functions in several related languages, and as it relates to aspect in usage. An analysis of evidence for this description as it functions …

Shakespeare's Philosophy Of Music, Emily Sulka Apr 2017

Shakespeare's Philosophy Of Music, Emily Sulka

Music and Worship Student Presentations

Shakespeare is one of the most widely read figures in literature, but his use of music is not usually touched on in literary discussions of his works. In this paper, I discuss how Shakespeare portrays music within the context of his plays, both through dialogue and songs performed within each work. In Shakespeare’s time, Boethius’ philosophy of the music of the spheres was still highly popular. This was the idea that the arrangement of the cosmos mirrored musical proportions. As a result, every aspect of the universe was believed to be highly ordered, and this idea is prominent throughout Shakespeare’s …

A Linguistic Comparison Of Biblical Greek And English: How Should The Adverbial Participle Be Translated?, Sarah C. Nickchen Apr 2016

A Linguistic Comparison Of Biblical Greek And English: How Should The Adverbial Participle Be Translated?, Sarah C. Nickchen

Linguistics Senior Research Projects

This paper combines the two fields of linguistics and biblical Greek studies in a scientific study of original research. Linguistics can be defined as “the scientific study of the language systems of the world” (Black, 1995, 5). Biblical Greek studies focus on analysis of the original New Testament text. Semantics (the meaning of words and phrases) is one subfield of linguistics, and the focus of this paper. The Greek adverbial participle is the most versatile Greek participle. The English adverbial participle is much less versatile. Thus, this paper focuses on adverbial participles in Greek and English in order to determine …

Is This Author Intelligent? The Effect Of Spelling Errors On Perception Of Authors, Rachel M. Schloneger Apr 2016

Is This Author Intelligent? The Effect Of Spelling Errors On Perception Of Authors, Rachel M. Schloneger

Linguistics Senior Research Projects

This study seeks to understand how the presence of spelling errors affects readers’ perceptions of an author’s intelligence and writing ability. Undergraduate students and professors read a short essay and completed a sixteen-question questionnaire concerning their perceptions of the author and the essay. The number of spelling errors present (zero, five, or ten) in the essay was manipulated by the researcher. Participant perceptions of the author and the essay suffered as more spelling errors were found. Participants in the five- and ten-error conditions judged both the author and the essay more harshly, giving it lower scores. Further, intelligence ratings suffered …

Linguistic Expression And Gender: A Function Word Analysis Of Jane Austen’S Pride And Prejudice, Erica Corbiere

Linguistics Senior Research Projects

The current study investigates ten dimensions of female and male categories of speech, which focus on function words, as previously identified by Newman et al. (2008). Through the use of the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count tool (using the LIWC2015 dictionary), these ten categories were analyzed in the dialogue of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Results were consistent with previous findings by Newman et al. (2008). Four of five previously identified categories as more often used by male speakers (numbers, words per sentence, prepositions, articles, and words greater than six letters) were used with an even greater difference between …

“Do Not Ask Me To Remain The Same”: Charles Darwin In Lizzie Bright And The Buckminster Boy, Rachael D. Tague May 2015

“Do Not Ask Me To Remain The Same”: Charles Darwin In Lizzie Bright And The Buckminster Boy, Rachael D. Tague

English Seminar Capstone Research Papers

In Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy, Gary D. Schmidt uses Darwin to allow his young protagonist to question the mindless acceptance of organized religion and to force his readers to engage difficult conversations, come to their own conclusions, and apply truth to their lives. Darwin provides answers and adventure, delivers Turner from his prison-like label, draws him closer to his father, his friends, and nature, while at the same time disconnecting him from the self-righteous town, its corrupt church, and its unjust God. Phippsburg was a prison; Darwin is freedom.

This is my capstone paper from English Seminar and my English degree. The paper is an analysis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers album Californication and its relation to the fan base of the band. Finally, the paper shows how the album …

'We Need Some Light': Seeing Identities After Grief In Next To Normal, Kathy S. Roberts Apr 2015

'We Need Some Light': Seeing Identities After Grief In Next To Normal, Kathy S. Roberts

English Seminar Capstone Research Papers

Next to Normal, a 2010 musical with lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt, portrays a family who appears normal, but a closer look indicates that the family is crumbling in a variety of ways. The family attempts to heal itself through a variety of tactics and treatments, all of which prove insufficient. However, the musical ends optimistically with the characters believing they will find “some light” to shine into their darkness. According to grief theorist Dennis Klass, the light that the Goodman family in Next to Normal seeks is a healthy continuing bond with Gabe. Since the …

Capitalistic Christians And Educated Elites: Fanonian Theory And Neo-Colonialism In Ngugi Wa Thiong’O’S A Grain Of Wheat, Rebecca Miller

English Seminar Capstone Research Papers

Ngugi Wa Thiong’o’s novel A Grain of Wheat, published in 1967, exposes the ways in which British institutions and practices continue to plague post-colonial Kenya. This novel addresses the condition of post-colonial Kenya as native Kenyans struggle to form a new national identity and government. This novel exposes the corruption of the Christian Church and the cultural imperialism perpetuated by missionaries as they impose European practices and abolish Kenyan cultural values. Ngugi’s work reflects the influence of Marxist thought and the impact of writers such as Frantz Fanon whose neo-colonialist theory explains many of the phenomena present in post-colonial Kenya. …

We Are Infinite: Confronting High School Simulacra In Stephen Chbosky’S The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, Michayla N. Lehman

English Seminar Capstone Research Papers

“Stephen Chbosky saved lives. No, not in the saving-a-cat-from-a-burning-building way nor performing the Heimlich on a little old lady at a restaurant. He saved lives by writing a peculiar little green book” (Aquino). The Perks of Being a Wallflower has become a phenomenon among adolescents in contemporary America. Passed on through recommendations for over 15 years, Charlie’s story has administered a sense of hope to the young people who read his letters. They say they relate to Charlie, that he makes them feel understood. For some, his story has saved their lives; at least two people have written to Chbosky …

Rhetorical Genre Theory And The Enactment Of Faith In The Composition Classroom, Heather N. Hill Jan 2014

Rhetorical Genre Theory And The Enactment Of Faith In The Composition Classroom, Heather N. Hill

Faculty Integration Papers

In James Berlin’s Rhetoric and Reality: Writing Instruction in American Colleges, 1900-1985 he argues that “every rhetorical system is based on epistemological assumptions about the nature of reality, the nature of the knower, and the rules governing the discovery and communication of the known” (4). Beginning with the debates between Plato and the sophists and running through the history of rhetoric to the likes of Wayne Booth on one side and William Covino on the other, rhetorical theorists have always been interested in debating the nature of reality, knowledge, morality, ethics, and T/truth. How one defines the status of these, …

The Fantasy Of The Real: J.R.R. Tolkien, Modernism, And Postmodernism, Hannah Brady

English Seminar Capstone Research Papers

J.R.R. Tolkien’s trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, grips readers of all ages in the power of its story and characters. Tolkien leads his audience through a world and a time that is entirely different from that of contemporary society, but he also remains true to the human condition as the morals and conflicts within the story resonate with authentic human emotion. Tolkien allows readers to temporarily escape the present although not to forget reality. Tolkien follows his own “rules” of “fairy-story” in order to present a fantastical tale that represents Truth better than many stories that may not …
