Revisiting 'Seventeen–Year Literature' (1949-1966) In China From A Neocolonial Perspective, Tian Zhang Dec 2018

Revisiting 'Seventeen–Year Literature' (1949-1966) In China From A Neocolonial Perspective, Tian Zhang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Revisiting Seventeen–Year Literature' (1949-1966) in China from a Neocolonial Perspective" Tian Zhang surveys the "Seventeen-Year Literature" (1949-1966) from a neocolonial perspective. It reviews the internal and external factors of anxiety faced by Chinese during the period of seventeen years since the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The seventeen years witnessed a stress on and flourishing of the proletarian socialist literature of the people, by the people and for the people. The seventeen-year literature, on its way to smashing the old system, represents the trend of Chinese literature of the time and the extension …

Masks: A New Face For The Theatre, Alexi Michael Siegel Dec 2018

Masks: A New Face For The Theatre, Alexi Michael Siegel

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

This study seeks to reimagine and reinvigorate modern theatre’s relationship with mask work through text-based historical research and practice-based artistic research. It focuses on three ancient mask traditions: pre- and early Hellenistic Greek theatre, Japanese Noh theatre, and Nigerian Egungun masquerades. Research on these mask traditions and recent masked productions informed the development and staging of a masked performance of Charles Mee’s Life is a Dream. The production featured sections for each of the ancient masking styles and a final section that explored masks in a contemporary theatrical style. As a whole, this creative project pulls masks out of …

The Colonized Masculinity And Cultural Politics Of Seediq Bale, Chin-Ju Lin Dec 2018

The Colonized Masculinity And Cultural Politics Of Seediq Bale, Chin-Ju Lin

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, “The Colonized Masculinity and Cultural Politics of Seediq Bale,” Chin-ju Lin discusses a Taiwanese blockbuster movie, a postcolonial historiography and a form of life-writing, which delineates the last Indigenous insurrection against Japanese colonialism. This article explores the cultural representations in Seediq Bale. Fighting back as a colonized man for pride and dignity is portrayed as means to restore their masculine identity. The headhunting tradition is remembered, romanticized, praised highly as heroic and even strengthened in an inaccurate way to promote individualistic masculinity and to forge a new national identity in postcolonial Taiwan. Nevertheless, the stereotypical …

談談戰國文字中用爲“野”的“冶”字, Ping'an Zhao Dec 2018

談談戰國文字中用爲“野”的“冶”字, Ping'an Zhao

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

戰國文字中有一個從“土”從“爪”的字,長期以來得不到正確的釋讀。本文比較系統地梳理了該字的研究歷史,分析了該字的相關用例,特别是新出簡帛資料,認爲應釋爲野。從來源上講,很可能是冶的假借改造字。

説甲骨文的「豕凶十」和「奚戌」字, Qingyu Du Dec 2018

説甲骨文的「豕凶十」和「奚戌」字, Qingyu Du

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

甲骨文中的「豕凶十」和「奚戌」字都比較常見,但它們的字形該如何分析,學界尚無統一意見。本文通過相關字形的分析對比,並結合辭例及文獻進行考察,認爲「豕凶十」爲「冡」字初文,「奚戌」爲「髡」字初文。

中國古墓爲何隨葬書籍, Hua Yang Dec 2018

中國古墓爲何隨葬書籍, Hua Yang

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Jian Chen Dec 2018

據出土文獻説“懸諸日月而不刊”及相關問題, Jian Chen

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Pui Ling Tang Dec 2018

新見《壽「四每」尊》銘文所見「卜馬」字試釋, Pui Ling Tang

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Pei Shen Dec 2018

新出曾伯「雨桼」壺銘的“元屖”與舊著録銅器銘文中相關詞語考釋, Pei Shen

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Zhi-Peng Lin Dec 2018

戰國楚竹書《容成氏》校讀, Zhi-Peng Lin

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Wei Han Dec 2018

新出“宗人”諸器所反映的西周宗族關係, Wei Han

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Yongbing Guo Dec 2018

戰國工官屬吏中的成童 : 再談三晉銘刻中所見“孺子”的身份, Yongbing Guo

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Gang Xu Dec 2018

前言, Gang Xu

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Fuhai Zhang Dec 2018

諧聲假借的原則及複雜性, Fuhai Zhang

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Kanli Chen Dec 2018

司馬遷與《過秦》篇, Kanli Chen

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Gang Xu Dec 2018

試論早期“中國”觀念的形成, Gang Xu

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

西周初年,“中國”的概念逐漸固定在洛陽,這是武王、周公的戰略設計。在周民族進入中國歷史之前,洛陽一直是個邊緣地帶,並不是政治與文化的中心。西周以前,華夏族的政治經濟中心是九州中的冀州地區。把洛陽作爲天下之中,除了地理的因素之外,更重要的是宗教、軍事、資源上的考慮。“中國”是一個宗教性的概念,是一種精神的象徵。

The Literati Purport Of Jiazhuan And Theoretical Reflection On Its Ideas Of "Using Literature As Play", Xiaoju Huang, Weiguo Zhao Nov 2018

The Literati Purport Of Jiazhuan And Theoretical Reflection On Its Ideas Of "Using Literature As Play", Xiaoju Huang, Weiguo Zhao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

A relatively independent type of ancient Chinese prose, jiazhuan was biographies written anthropomorphically for objects. Han Yu's Biography of Mao Ying written in the Tang dynasty marked the beginning of jiazhuan, followed by numerous parodies in the Song and Ming dynasties. Such prose, written by the literati at leisure for entertainment, embodied their refined aesthetic taste. This article argues that jiazhuan was an expression in the form of games, which displayed writers' talent. Thus perceived, just like "writing is for conveying truth", "using literature as play" became an important and necessary literary stance for the literati to divert themselves from …

The Other In The View Of The Self And The Self In The Horizon Of The Other: The "Reconstruction Of Canon" In The Translations Of Literary Mind And The Carving Of Dragons In American Scholarship, Pengfei Gu Nov 2018

The Other In The View Of The Self And The Self In The Horizon Of The Other: The "Reconstruction Of Canon" In The Translations Of Literary Mind And The Carving Of Dragons In American Scholarship, Pengfei Gu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This article discusses a basic literary question: suppose there is an original text which is an authorized canon, then is its translated text still a canon? The circulation of Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons in American scholarship is an example. Those translated texts, rewritten through cross-cultural translation, deviate from the original because they were reconstructed in a heterogeneous cultural context. With three kinds of research methods, including contextual reduction of the original text, form reconstruction of the paratext and comparison of intertextuality between Chinese and Western versions, Vincent Yu-chung Shih, Stephen Owen and Yang Guobin succeeded in reestablishing …

The Relationship Between Meaning, Images, And Words Of Yang Wanli's Poetics, Ruiqing Li Nov 2018

The Relationship Between Meaning, Images, And Words Of Yang Wanli's Poetics, Ruiqing Li

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Illustrating the system of meaning, images, and words from The Book of Changes, Yang Wanli concludes that one should seek images through and within words, and Tao through and within images. Applying this philosophical logic to poetic logic, Yang reaches the conclusion that in that case, wan xiang bi lai (you can see all images in your head), and yi zai ju zhong (what you intend to convey has been expressed in sentences) help form rigorously structured poetics with Confucian tradition of meaning and words. Based on Yang's unique theory of mind-material relationship and his favor to natural imagery, wan …

Three Meanings Of Moderation: The Effective Integration Of Literary Aesthetics And Ethic Politics As A Practice Of Rhetoric Politics, Fengjie Liu, Tiange Fan Nov 2018

Three Meanings Of Moderation: The Effective Integration Of Literary Aesthetics And Ethic Politics As A Practice Of Rhetoric Politics, Fengjie Liu, Tiange Fan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

As a theory of artistic style within the domain of political cultivation, moderation is both the result and rhetorical practice of Confucian ethics and authoritarian politics. Moderation forms its own systemic characteristics, namely, roundabout admonishment in terms of rhetorical strategies, aesthetics of harmony regarding aesthetic taste, and a lyrical principle of starting with genuine feelings and stopping with good manners. However, after the May 4th Movement, it was replaced by the creation principle of "starting with genuine feelings, and ending with genuine feelings".

"Establishing Xiang To Fully Express Idea" And Chinese Aesthetic Culture, Dakang Ma Nov 2018

"Establishing Xiang To Fully Express Idea" And Chinese Aesthetic Culture, Dakang Ma

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

"Daxiang (great image)" and "Xiangwang (beings without trace)" are a state of "Non-Objectivity". Through imitation and imagination, the relationship between human and nature is transformed from object relationship to non-object relationship, which ultimately leads to human understanding of "Tao". This is the meaning of "establishing Xiang to fully express idea". "Yixiang (image)", "Yijing (ideo-mood-imagery)" and "Jingjie (state or realm)" are the fields composed of "Xiang" and "Daxiang", which can be called "Xiang-Daxiang". "Xiang-Daxiang" is the cell of the Chinese aesthetic culture and it produces the unique character of Chinese aesthetic culture, and also determines the unique way of thinking and …
