As Northern New Mexicans we share watersheds, mountain ranges, wild growing remedios, the sun's setting path, and strong querencia. Yet, there are innumerable differet and significant ways in which our hearts beat for this land, water, and sky. This is querencia in the Fall season, in relation to our river. It is exactly what I observe today and love about time and place in Northern NM. It may be similar to many Nortenos, but not easily replicated.

Place is theorized through many lenses: geographical, sociological, political, and architectural, to name a few, and travel theorists study the economics and production of place. Yet sensory perception of places travelled are understudied. My thesis offers the determination of “place-soul” as an experiment in sensory perception of place, and the accompanying South Carolina travelogues exemplify case studies of place-soul’s revealing. By successfully ascertaining the essence of place by marrying objective and subjective lenses, and accurately describing the belongingness and connections uncovered, the reader will identify with me through words, and travel may be inspired by a shared sense of belonging. …

This hybrid thesis is comprised of three creative works – two collections of poetry for children and a verse novel – as well as three journal articles examining aspects of children’s poetry, and exegetical discussion of the creative works and of key concepts influencing both the creative and discursive elements of the thesis.

A young African American girl struggled to stay socially afloat in a predominantly white private school. Longing for a connection with a community of black scholars in college, she surprisingly grew very intimidated of her own people. Not only was she stuck in this limbo, but she felt insecure and unconfident transitioning to a four-year university as the first in her family. After finishing her first year and returning from her first study abroad trip to the Dominican Republic, Stephanie reflects on her journey in education, pursuing her dreams, and coming into her own as a young woman.

The thesis comprises a collection of short fiction, Maps for the Lost, and a critical essay, “Human / Nature Ecotones: Climate Change and the Ecological Imagination.” In ecological terms, areas of interaction between adjacent ecosystems are known as ecotones. Sites of relationship between biotic communities, they are charged with fertility and evolutionary possibility. While postcolonial scholarship is concerned with borders as points of cross-cultural contact, ecocritical thought focuses upon the ecotone that occurs at the interface between human and non-human nature.

This essay examines the travels of the poetic speakers in two poetry collections: by the Argentinean writer Lila Zemborain, and by the Galician poet and critic María do Cebreiro, to postulate a revision of notions of belonging in its intersection with gender and space. Rasgado (2006) is a sort of poetic diary written by Lila Zemborain, who resides in New York, responding as both insider and outsider to the World Trade Center attacks on 11 September 2001. María do Cebreiro's book, Non son de aquí (2008) similarly follows the path of a nomadic speaker intent on redefining the terms of …
