A Call To Create: Poetry As Healing And One Nurse’S Self-Discovery, Kim Cornett Henry, Kim Cornett Henry
A Call To Create: Poetry As Healing And One Nurse’S Self-Discovery, Kim Cornett Henry, Kim Cornett Henry
English Theses
Florence Nightingale’s vision for nursing has changed greatly in the past one hundred and fifty years, with nursing’s identity replaced with an emphasis on science over caring. The fast-paced, technologically sophisticated environments, designed to meet the declining health of an American public, have resulted in nurses who are being pulled away from nurse-to-patient caring acts and the reasons they felt called to become nurses. These changes have had detrimental psychological and emotional effects on nurses and are especially evident in Intensive Care nurses. Expressive writing as poetry, autoethnography, and participation in vibrant writing communities offer nurses experiences for healing, voice, …
Songs Of Eden, Emma Atkinson
Songs Of Eden, Emma Atkinson
Student Research Submissions
Songs of Eden is a collection of short poems that were written during the Spring of 2021 semester as an individual study under the direction of Dr. Teresa Kennedy. The course itself was titled “Songs of the Fall” and fell under the category of ENGL 491. The name of the individual study is a nod to both the fall of man, and the tradition of epic poetry. As such, the project itself centers around the opening chapters of Genesis, focalizing on the persons of Adam and Eve. The work is divided into two main sections, each written from the perspective …
Campus Poetry Walk: (Re)Creating And Reconnecting A Community (Presentation), Lisa Villa
Campus Poetry Walk: (Re)Creating And Reconnecting A Community (Presentation), Lisa Villa
Staff publications
In January 2020, the Outreach and Engagement Team at the College of the Holy Cross began preparing a poetry walk, which was reconfigured to a social media “poetry event” due to COVID-19. With the anticipated return of students to campus for the Spring 2021 semester and a need for the community (especially students) to have recreational opportunities that were safe, socially distanced and preferably outside, the Team attempted for a second time to plan a poetry walk. CrossWorks, the institutional repository for the College, was a part of this plan from the beginning. Foremost, CrossWorks would support the scholarly and …
Reshaping The Canon: How “Insta-Poets” Are Creating A New Literary Space For Readers Using Social Media, Hannah Salsbery
Reshaping The Canon: How “Insta-Poets” Are Creating A New Literary Space For Readers Using Social Media, Hannah Salsbery
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Reading and analyzing poetry can be an equally beautiful and frustrating experience. Interacting with a poem allows a reader to access untapped emotions through the words on the page; yet, when not given the tools to understand canonical poetry, young readers are often left at a loss. The rise of “Insta-poetry” gives younger generations of readers access to poems that are both relatable in experience and language. Using Rupi Kaur as a vehicle towards unmasking the importance of the rise of poetry on Instagram, this thesis highlights the importance of reshaping the literary canon to become a more inclusive, diverse, …

Tomb And Temple : The Poet’S Use Of Positive Body Imagery To Communicate Messages Of Psychological Wellbeing, Shelby Elizabeth Poulin
Tomb And Temple : The Poet’S Use Of Positive Body Imagery To Communicate Messages Of Psychological Wellbeing, Shelby Elizabeth Poulin
Masters Theses
Mary Oliver writes that imagery is the texture of a poem, and the “detailed, sensory language incorporating images . . . gives the poem dash and tenderness” (Oliver 92). Imagery brings poetry to life, offering the reader a whole-body experience over simple description. Oliver cautions, however, that imagery is powerful and should be used responsibility, further implying that this texture can also become jolting, harsh, or offensive if used incorrectly (Oliver 107-108). With this caution in mind, the purpose of my forty-six poem collection—Tomb and Temple: Letters to the Body—is to use images of the body responsibly, in a way …

This research attempts to identify the interpretation of poetry in the Sufi hearing councils from the viewpoint of Al-Ghazali, his philosophy of interpretation, and his presentation of the activities of these councils, with a focus on poetry as a diverse, deep, and open to interpretation cultural source.

Something American, Carolina S. Souto
Something American, Carolina S. Souto
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
SOMETHING AMERICAN is a poetry collection written from the perspective of a first-generation American navigating a growing family, a political crisis, and a global pandemic. Influences on this collection include Robert Hass’s THE ESSENTIAL HAIKU and FIELD GUIDE, which attend to nature and the poet-speaker’s immediate surroundings with diligence and precision. Ariel Francisco’s place poems and creative titles in ALL MY HEROES ARE BROKE provide important touchstones for Souto’s commitment to here-and-now writing. And Sylvia Plath’s frank and complex writing about motherhood in ARIEL grants the poet permission to probe these subjects as well.
In SOMETHING AMERICAN, experimental poems sprawl …

Great River Legs, Laura Madeline Wiseman
Zea E-Books Collection
Great River Legs is a lyric collection of prose poetry, creative nonfiction, and found poetry. This creative response documents my 1,398 mile, 25-day bicycle ride from Muscatine, Iowa, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, between October 2017–March 2018. The journey took place in legs over breaks during the school year, with two additional back-to-back weekend rides that started the adventure.
In her latest book, Great River Legs, Laura Madeline Wiseman takes you on an intimate journey as she weaves in and out of a cross-country, long distance bike ride. In this beautifully curated book that includes prose poetry, creative non-fiction and …
Cultivating The Cyborg Voice: Technology In The Creative Writing Classroom, Rebecca Valley
Cultivating The Cyborg Voice: Technology In The Creative Writing Classroom, Rebecca Valley
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
This article takes a critical look at pieces generated from a capstone project in a recent mixed-genre Intro to Creative Writing workshop. It was inspired by an open-ended creative project asking students to use technology to generate unconventional works of fiction, poetry, memoir, and theatre. Writer and educator Rebecca Valley's hope when assigning this project was to encourage students to innovate and step outside their standard forms. But beyond mere innovation of form, students surprised her in their capacity to use technology to hybridize their authorial voices – rather than merely changing the form of their own words, they became …

(Re)Considering Craft And Centralizing Cultures: A Revision Of The Introductory Creative Writing Workshop, Zoë Bossiere, Micah Mccrary
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
This article explores options for introductory creative writing curricula that allow for and encourage a greater consideration of personal identity and audience on the part of the student-author. It reaches toward possibilities for revising the introductory creative writing course as a space for student-authors to not only consider the cultural positions of the professional authors they study, but also the ways in which their own subject-positions influence their writing practices, craft choices, and understandings of genre. The article overall proposes a holistic revision to the standard, introductory creative writing curriculum, moving student-authors beyond considerations of “good” creative writing, and toward …

HON 499 Honors Thesis or Creative Project
Her Burning Namesake is a collection of ekphrastic poetry centered around the twenty-two Major Arcana cards in the Tarot Deck illustrated by Pamela C. Smith. The Tarot Deck inspires personal growth and insight as a tool for self reflection and is a unique artwork in its interactiveness; viewers are encouraged to seek themselves within the cards and make inferences about their meanings in a way that is inherently personal. By writing poetry about my deck, I hope to share some of the intimacy of my experience with others, while inviting readers to form their own connection with the cards.

Haunting this Garden is a poetry chapbook containing several poems and illustrations. The final copies were printed and bound with paper, glue, and cloth. Poems in the chapbook were written between 2018 and 2021, though all were heavily revised before being used in the chapbook. The pieces explore themes of love, fear, guilt, and shame. They are all heavily grounded in environmental themes.
Greenhouse, Sophie Hall
Greenhouse, Sophie Hall
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
Greenhouse is a chapbook of creative nonfiction lyric essays and poems about what it means to be at home, fragmented forms echoing my own varied definitions. The writing in this chapbook returns to ideas I have explored for years, expanding on my original college application essay titled “Home” to think about what it means to be at home, what defines a home, and how I am currently building one.
While I was not familiar with the term “creative nonfiction” at the time, my college application essay was my first introduction to the genre, allowing me to reflect on my childhood …
