Oy It's The Cosmetics, Stupid: Or How Estee Lauder Changed The Post 9/11 World, Marleen S. Barr

Publications and Research

Professor Sondra Lear, the protagonist of my novels Oy Pioneer! (2003) and Oy Feminist Science Fiction (in press) – and some of my short fiction – appears in this story. I trot out Sondra whenever I imagine coping with reality in terms of science fictional premises. Sondra, then, is a Walter Mitty fantasy version of me. Yes, spending one’s professional life as a science fiction scholar is exceedingly interesting and exciting. But it does have its limitations. I can’t hang out with the feminist extraterrestrials who form the crux of my academic pursuits. I can’t beam up and down, time …

The Pink And Yellow Star, Naomi Cahn Dec 2013

The Pink And Yellow Star, Naomi Cahn

Writing Programs

Cahn utilized a history major and Jewish studies minor to write her fictional piece for Dr. Michael Datcher’s Creative Writing class of fall 2013. “The Pink and Yellow Star” tells the story of a young woman’s struggle to survive as a homosexual during the Holocaust. There were many difficulties writing this heavy-handed of a story, both factually and emotionally. Cahn wanted to make good the motto that Jews had promised, “Never again.” However, she believed that Jews and most of the world had not abided by this ideal. There’s still genocide in the world; there’s still discrimination, oppression, and persecution. …

Crayons And Yarn, Danielle G. Holloway Nov 2013

Crayons And Yarn, Danielle G. Holloway

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This portfolio contains poems, creative nonfiction, and short stories, all original pieces of writing produced while completing the Creative Writing Minor at Cedarville University. The poems come from my own life, and while they are not intended to be a cohesive narrative, arranged in this order they tell a story of growing up, leaving home, and finding love. The nonfiction pieces come from a collection centered around my experiences in high school marching band, though a love story is present there as well. The short stories also draw heavily from my own experiences and passions, exploring themes that are important …

Keep The Doors Open, Lauren C. Rivera Nov 2013

Keep The Doors Open, Lauren C. Rivera

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My purpose in writing this collection of lyric essays is to examine my evolution during one decade, from age 19 to 29. Essential questions have guided me: What stimulated change? What formed my decisions? What predisposed me to my relationship with my partner? Why did I want to have a child? What kind of relationship do I have with my son? How did my relationship with my partner evolve? Why did we decide to leave Miami? Hopefully, I have given the reader a glimpse into my movement from self-centeredness to motherhood, from aloof adolescent to committed partner, from timid daughter …

This Level Of Living, Rose Havard Nov 2013

This Level Of Living, Rose Havard

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This portfolio contains poetry, nonfiction, and one short fiction story. Two nonfiction pieces appearing here, “Welcome to the Armory” and “Survey: Headphones” have also been published in the online journal Prick of the Spindle. All pieces were written between August of 2012 and May 2013. I consider this collection the best of my college writing.

I pay extra attention to sounds in my pieces. I also try to achieve a certain level of ostranenie—a poetry term that means “making the familiar strange”—because I am fascinated with the attempt. This Level of Living refers to a state of high awareness, of …
