be Still
I loved writing since I was 12. I learned putting words on paper solidifies the human experience, whether it be through poetry, music, stories, or simply free-writing one's thoughts. Attending medical school has broadened my experience with other realities to an unexpected degree. I realize that wanting to save lives through healthcare comes at a great cost to the person pursuing a career in medicine. Writing about the intensity of medical school helped me cope and I hope that my future patients will come to understand, sometimes, the only way out is through, and coping by using the things we …

Journal of Multicultural Affairs
Poetry elicits emotions and imagery, which can capture the sentiments of the collective experiences that educators and our society are experiencing during this moment in history. This poem calls to attention the way in which the COVID-19 pandemic has affected our country through social distancing precautions put into place to curb the spread of the virus. The verses in the poem speak to the loss of community and celebrations that occurred during this time. The poem concludes by addressing the racial awakening that has also taken place during these unprecedented times. The pandemic reduced many of life’s distractions allowing a …

As Your Writing And Reading Teacher, Jean Prokott
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
AS YOUR WRITING & READING TEACHER, and as a poetry enthusiast (fangirl), I was thinking about you yesterday as I watched Amanda Gorman perform her poem at Biden's inauguration, and then I was really thinking about you, students, as I watched Anderson Cooper interview her last night. I hope so much that you heard the poem, and I would truly love for you to watch the interview: she talks about the task to write a poem, the feel of words over images, the research she did from history and culture to pull this poem together. It is a feat that …

Golden Shovel Poems
A Golden Shovel is a poetic form devised by Terrence Hayes in homage to the African American poet Gwendolyn Brooks, long time poet laureate of Chicago. It is a poem in which the poet takes a line from another poet’s poem (or the entire poem if it is short) and creates a new poem. In the poems below, retired Dordt professor David Schelhaas takes the words of the poem “Bee Still” by his son Luke (written in 1994 when he was a Dordt student), and creates a new poem by using them as the end words of …
