Critiquing The Discourse On Women In The Edo Era: Intertextual Studies Of Ariyoshi’S Hanaoka Seishū No Tsuma, Nina Alia Ariefa, Melani Budianta, Dhita Hapsarani
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Under the Tokugawa clan, Japanese women’s position was declined throughout the Edo era (1603–1868). Almost one century afterwards, a female writer called Ariyoshi Sawako (1931–1984) raised the issue of female position in the Edo era through the novel Hanaoka Seishū no Tsuma (HSNT). This article will focus on two things. First is the exploration of the discourse of women in the Edo Era through three texts written during the era. The second part of the article will discuss the intertextuality of novel, with the discourse on women in the Edo era. New historicism method and Foucault’s concepts of discourse and …

Critical Humanities
Hannah Turner is an Appalachian poet who often writes of personal insecurities, self-discovery, and ascension beyond the ordinary. Hannah enjoys incorporating conversations of worldly phenomenon into her poems. There is much beauty all around us. As poetry enables a writer to communicate the beauty that underlies even the greatest misfortunes, Hannah has identified the medium of expression as being opportunistic for a lyrical delivery while making mention of emotional human encounters. She is a B.S./Ph.D. Biomedical Research student at Marshall University in Huntington, WV, and a native of Matewan, WV. She draws support from both living and passed family members, …

The Downtown Review
Every human has a pair of guardians; one angel and one demon. When the human dies, the angel and demon decide where the human will end up. Sadie, an angel, and Addison, a demon, are case partners, and their current assignment is Marley Gallagher. Sadie has to grapple with what it means to be a mortal and what it means to be an angel when Marley falls in love.

The Confluence
As with most things, they’re never fully appreciated until after they’re no longer available. Sitting alone on campus on a cold autumn evening, when asked to write a response about the importance of home, I found myself thinking for the first time in my life about why I enjoyed the remote lifestyle of my childhood to my social urban present. Even after discovering my conclusions, I found it impossible to explain to others my feelings regarding my disdain towards a loud, bright, transient society that they feel is as much of a part of them as my hometown is of …
