Essays For Undergraduate Liberal Arts Education, Hugo G. Walter
Essays For Undergraduate Liberal Arts Education, Hugo G. Walter
Institute for the Humanities Theses
The purpose of this creative project is to develop an anthology of significant essays for undergraduate liberal arts education. Each essay is preceded by an introduction about the author and the importance of his work. Each essay will encourage the student to think actively and consistently about ideas and issues and to develop a greater sensitivity for and understanding of the world around him.
I have chosen the following twenty-five authors from the nineteenth and twentieth century for this anthology: Henry Thoreau, Henry Adams, Mark Twain, John Stuart Mill, Leo Tolstoy, Friedrich Nietzsche, Susan Anthony, William James, Bertrand Russell, Jane …

Preface And Introductory Materials To Approaches To Teaching Cather’S My Ántonia, Susan J. Rosowski
Preface And Introductory Materials To Approaches To Teaching Cather’S My Ántonia, Susan J. Rosowski
Department of English: Faculty Publications
The aim of this volume is to provide background and ideas others have found most helpful in teaching My Antonia. The portion presented here describes Cather's role in preparing the text and supervising the physical design of My Antonia, and reviews other writing by Cather relevant to My Antonia, as well as biographical studies and criticism recommended most often by instructors who teach it. It includes also a selective introduction to materials recommended for instructors' libraries: reference works on Cather, general background, biographical studies, and critical commentary. Finally, it surveys aids to teaching: pedagogical articles and non-print …
My Ántonia As Plains Epic, Paul Olson
My Ántonia As Plains Epic, Paul Olson
Department of English: Faculty Publications
When I assign My Antonia, I teach it to the sons and daughters or more distant relatives, in blood or spirit, of the people it treats. I have had relatives of Mrs. Pavelka in my classes, citizens of Red Cloud and Wilber, Czechs who still retain their Czech culture, and classicists at the University of Nebraska who study what Cather studied here. It is thus impossible entirely to make the work of art defamiliarize the experience, as Shklovsky would have it do, nor would I want it to remove the students from their pasts and knowledge of family or …
The Romanticism Of My Ántonia: Every Reader's Story, Susan J. Rosowski
The Romanticism Of My Ántonia: Every Reader's Story, Susan J. Rosowski
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Romanticism is fundamental to My Antonia, shaping the attitudes that control its structure, style, and narration, as well as its expectations of a reader. I immediately face a dilemma in teaching this romanticism, however, for most of my students haven't even the most rudimentary understanding of what romanticism is. They have negative associations of something emotional, irrelevant, and backward-looking; asked for details, they describe surface features that vaguely concern poets brooding about nature. Almost none understands romanticism as a way of knowing, by which individuals use their imaginations to create value in an otherwise meaningless world (Rosowski, Voyage). …

Garnerings 譯藪 88-89, Garnerings Editorial Board
Garnerings 譯藪
"Garnerings" is edited, translated and largely compiled by the third year Honours Diploma students of the Lingnan Translation Department. They set out to polish their translation techniques and to put into practice what they have learnt about publishing and printing. During the process of putting "Garnerings” into print, students were greatly motivated and had set high standards for their work. They were responsible for the overall design and content after having consulted the opinions of students from all years in the department. When students interviewed teachers, administrators in translation and interpretation, they learned to work harmoniously as a team to …

Montaigne's "De L'Amitié" And The Problem Of Communication, Camilla J. Nilles
Quidditas
In the world of change and becoming revealed by Montaigne's Essais, his friendship with La Boétie stands out as an island of firmness and stability. Montaigne never questions the perfection of their relationship, nor have his readers doubted Montaigne's sincerity. They have taken Montaigne at his word in part because so little is actually known about the two friends' relations, but primarily because La Boétie's friendship is not nearly as important to Montaigne studies as La Boétie's death.

Frederick Barbarossa And The Lombard League: Imperial Regalia, Prescriptive Rights, And The Northern Italian Cities, David R. Carr
Frederick Barbarossa And The Lombard League: Imperial Regalia, Prescriptive Rights, And The Northern Italian Cities, David R. Carr
Quidditas
The struggle between Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and the Lombard League illustrates conflicts between not only imperial and municipal ambitions but also regalian and customary rights. The ability of the emperor to assert and to profit from regalian rights reflected the efficacy of imperial power. Conversely, the power of the Lombard city-states lay in the recognition of the validity of customary rights. While this conflict centers on the differing principles of Roman and "Germanic" law, the present study argues that the purported devotion of Barbarossa to Roman law and of the Italian communes to customary law misrepresents their positions. The Lombards' …
Intertextuality In The Anglo-Norman Lyric, Carol J. Harvey
Intertextuality In The Anglo-Norman Lyric, Carol J. Harvey
Quidditas
The rhetorical formulae that permeate the poetry of the Middle Ages are not always used in a conventional or consistent manner. On the fringes of the main literary movements are works that raise doubts as to the very nature of medieval poetics. Some texts challenge accepted criteria with respect to genre, tone, or interpretation; others appear unfamiliar and heterogeneous in comparison with accepted poetic concepts; still others use the language and imagery of established poetics as a polemic strategy. Such problematic texts are found among the lyric poems composed in England during the Anglo-Norman era, particularly among the macaronics. These …

Sir Thomas Heneage Of Hainton: A Henrician Gentleman, Narasingha P. Sil
Quidditas
The obscurity of Sir Thomas Heneage (c. 1480-1553) in early Tudor history presents a sharp contrast to the relative prominence of his nephew and namesake who served Queen Elizabeth as the vice-chamberlain of her household. Sir Thomas Heneage the Younger (c. 1532-1595), who left a fuller record of his activities, has naturally been given a more extensive treatment in the Dictionary of National Biography, which devotes less than half a column to the senior Heneage. The uncle can further boast of one printed page in Rev. Mr. Oates's account of the Heneage family. One of his letters was published …

Emergence From The Dark: Female Epistolary Literature In The Middle Ages, Albrecht Classen
Emergence From The Dark: Female Epistolary Literature In The Middle Ages, Albrecht Classen
Quidditas
German medieval literary scholarship has always been dominated by male-oriented views, since research in this field has been traditionally carried out by men. Because of this, the role of women in medieval literature has been of only marginal interest to most scholars. Recent publications, however, have changed this situation, since an increasing number of women scholars have not only acquired a profile in medieval literary research but have also focused particularly on the life and culture of women in the Middle Ages. Thus the image of the medieval woman is slowly emerging from the dark, although most of our knowledge …
Treasonous Criticisms Of Henry Iv: The Loyal Poet Of Richard The Redeless And Mum And The Sothsegger, Diane A. Facinelli
Treasonous Criticisms Of Henry Iv: The Loyal Poet Of Richard The Redeless And Mum And The Sothsegger, Diane A. Facinelli
Quidditas
The merit of the Middle English alliterative poems Richard the Redelesss and Mum and the Sothsegger can be judged accurately only if they are approached as individual compositions. Ever since the Early English Text Society published the Mabel Day and Robert Steele edition of Mum and the Sothsegger in 1936, most scholars have uncritically accepted the single-poem theory these editors posited, regardless of how this adversely affected their analyses of the works. The argument for regarding Richard and Mum as fragments of one composition, begun in 1299 and finished sometime between 1403 and 1406, is, however, far less conclusive than …
