Contrapuntal Readings Of The Exilic Consciousness : Reading Yehuda Amichai And Mahmoud Darwish Together, Sarah Brooks Zahed

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

AbstractIn the essay “Cultural Criticism and Society” in Prisms, Theodor Adorno asserts that “to write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric” (34). In this study, I examine what it means to write poetry after the Catastrophe and the difficult relationship between historical genocides and their literary representations. My project “Contrapuntal Readings of the Exilic Consciousness: Reading Yehuda Amichai and Mahmoud Darwish Together” explores the scope and character of poetry post-1940s to late 20th century in relation to the Israeli and Palestinian conflict, at the margins of Arabic and Hebraic literary traditions. Both Shoah and Nakba mark a specific turning point in …

Intentional Entanglement : Walter Benjamin, Transcendental Yet Speculative, Darstellung, Andrew Brooks Aug 2022

Intentional Entanglement : Walter Benjamin, Transcendental Yet Speculative, Darstellung, Andrew Brooks

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation consists of retranslations of three essays by Walter Benjamin: “On the Program of the Coming Philosophy,” “The Task of the Translator” and “La traduction—le pour et le contre.” Each section and interlinear retranslation-commentary builds on the previous, moving from 1) Benjamin’s “transcendental yet speculative” philosophical foundation for experience, to 2) the importance of a performative Darstellung [performative presentation] which places criticism/philosophy/translation between science and poetry, 3) the conception of translation for Benjamin in 1923 within the frame of said philosophy and Darstellung, juxtaposed with his conception of translation in 1936, after his materialist aesthetic turn. The necessity of …

Dissidence And Displacement : Translation Theory Through The Work Of Natalya Gorbanevskaya, Darren Smith Jan 2019

Dissidence And Displacement : Translation Theory Through The Work Of Natalya Gorbanevskaya, Darren Smith

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The purported thesis is intended to aptly discuss the ways in which the particular work of Natalya Gorbanevskaya is able to be translated through the lens of a Daniel Weissbort and how through a full understanding of certain theories allow for certain notions of displacement and loss to traverse cultural boundaries through the act of translation. After a brief introduction, it is important to discuss the necessary background information and its relation to the task of translation before moving into an in-depth analysis of the poet’s work to argue how this displacement is visible through her translated work, before concluding …

"There Is So Much You Can't Translate" : English Translation Of Chinese Classic Poetry In Twentieth Century America, Ahui Yu Jan 2016

"There Is So Much You Can't Translate" : English Translation Of Chinese Classic Poetry In Twentieth Century America, Ahui Yu

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Although the translation of Chinese texts by modernist poets has been acknowledged by critics, the implications of this cultural exchange between China and America has not generated substantial critical study. Using Ludwig Wittgenstein’s theory of language, this thesis examines this cultural dialogue through the work of Ernest Fenollosa, Ezra Pound and Kenneth Rexroth. Restoring Fenollosa’s pioneering role, a chapter of this thesis uncovers his unfinished project of a fusion of East and West, and exposes his imperialist and nationalist attitudes that later result in appropriation. Reexamining Pound’s engagement with Chinese texts throughout his career, another chapter of this thesis argues …

The Dialectics Of Reading : Fredric Jameson And Politics Of Interpretation, Robert Henri Faivre Jan 2016

The Dialectics Of Reading : Fredric Jameson And Politics Of Interpretation, Robert Henri Faivre

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Fredric Jameson’s theory and practice of reading, in the name of critical interventions into the dominant hermeneutics in literary and cultural texts, have limited transformative readings and provided interpretive alibis, though an ever-receding utopian writerly space, for cultural reform within capitalism. Deploying a materialist analytics, The Dialectics of Reading draws out Jameson’s interpretive ambivalence, unlayers its class interests and demonstrates how in Jameson’s interpretations—from his Sartre: Origins of Style to An American Utopia: Dual Power and the Universal Army—the dominant material relationships are grasped as dialectical reading. In a detailed interpretation of his interpretation of “Walmart,” The Dialectics of Reading …

El Wavering Imaginativo Y La Conciencia Imaginante En Los Cuentos De Marvel Moreno Y Angela Carter, Alejandra Olarte Jan 2014

El Wavering Imaginativo Y La Conciencia Imaginante En Los Cuentos De Marvel Moreno Y Angela Carter, Alejandra Olarte

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In this dissertation, I explore the short stories of Colombian writer Marvel Moreno and English writer Angela Carter. I propose that the authors' works share a dual conceptualization of the notion of imagination -- imaginative wavering and imagining consciousness. These conceptualizations constitute interpretative frameworks to comparatively examine textual strategies and themes within the authors' works of fiction. A fundamental characteristic of both imaginative wavering and imagining consciousness is movement. With the former, movement implies a constant oscillation between intradiegetic reality and rational thinking, as exposed in the stories. With the latter, movement entails the act of grasping the reality that …

Experimental Poetry In Four Authors : Tablada, De Campos, Padin And Brossa, Emilia Sciarra-Laos

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The purpose of this work is to investigate and elaborate on the experimental poetry work of four authors: José Juan Tablada (Mexico), Haroldo de Campos (Brazil), Clemente Padín (Uruguay), and Joan Brossa (Spain-Catalonia), identifying commonalities and differences between them. Tablada and de Campos share the influence of the Chinese ideogram and Mallarmé's innovative poetic propositions. Another similarity between them is their work in translating or transcreating (a term coined by the Noigandres group) literary texts. With respect to Padín and Brossa, their commonalities reside in their need to openly express social and political views against totalitarian regimes in their countries. …

RéCits De Filiation : ÉTude De Trois Perspectives Dans La LittéRature QuéBéCoise Contemporaine, Danielle Jouet-Pastre

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

La littérature québécoise se transforme de manière significative entre les années 1960-80 avec la présence d'écrivains de souche étrangère, ce qui élargit considérablement la thématique, le style et les horizons culturels d'une littérature autrefois monoculturelle.
