La Tragedia De La Revolución Haitiana (The Tragedy Of The Haitian Revolution), Andrés Fabián Henao Castro Feb 2016

La Tragedia De La Revolución Haitiana (The Tragedy Of The Haitian Revolution), Andrés Fabián Henao Castro

To Live Like Fighting Cocks: 'Fight Club' And The Ethics Of Masculinity, Andrew Slade Nov 2015

To Live Like Fighting Cocks: 'Fight Club' And The Ethics Of Masculinity, Andrew Slade

Andrew R. Slade

David Fincher's 1999 adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's novel Fight Club has prompted many academics to write about this film and has captivated many of their students. As Warren Rosenberg, chair of English at the all-male Wabash College has said, "This seems to be a movie that they all adore so we'll see if we can deconstruct it, and hopefully get them to like it less" (Students, A10). While we may take this flippant comment from a 2001 story in The Chronicle of Higher Education as just that and dismiss it as quickly as it passes, Rosenberg's sentiment reflects a widespread …

Remake As Erasure In 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', Andrew Slade Nov 2015

Remake As Erasure In 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', Andrew Slade

Andrew R. Slade

Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) was remade as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) by Marcus Nispel. The remake erases the progressive critique of gender and family life in the United States that Hooper’s film screened and replaces that critique with a reactionary vision of sex, gender and family in the United States of the early twenty-first century.

On Mutilation: The Sublime Body Of Chuck Palahniuk's Fiction, Andrew Slade Oct 2015

On Mutilation: The Sublime Body Of Chuck Palahniuk's Fiction, Andrew Slade

Andrew R. Slade

Much of Chuck Palahniuk's writing centers on the mutilation of bodies. Bodies are broken from the outside. They are beaten unrecognizable and destroyed beyond recuperation. Bodies are transformed from one sex to another, one gender to another. In Palahniuk's writing, the human body is the site for the inscription of a search for modes of authentic living in a world where the difference between the fake and the genuine has ceased to function. Not just the rules that had regulated behavior and prospects for a good life, but the rules that determine desire, pleasure, gender identity, and family role are …

Lyotard, Beckett, Duras, And The Postmodern Sublime, Andrew Slade Oct 2015

Lyotard, Beckett, Duras, And The Postmodern Sublime, Andrew Slade

Andrew R. Slade

Samuel Beckett's texts are populated with characters who have been so deprived of their humanity that humanity appears as essentially absent from his texts. The characters' presence in the diegesis is marked by unmistakable absences-absence of vision, of mobility, of sense, of name. Beckett's characters are often without: without hair, without teeth, without foreseeable future. The human character is at the limit of humanity and runs the risk of passing over into the grey zone of the inhuman. They lose track of their place, of their time, of their names. They frequently belong to no time and no place. When …

Lois Lane Y Superman: El Periodismo Y La Democracia Contra El Neoliberalismo (Lois Lane And Superman: Journalism And Democracy Against Neoliberalism), Andrés Henao Castro

For All The Mias Of This World, Meredith Doench Jun 2015

For All The Mias Of This World, Meredith Doench

Meredith Doench

Over the past few years there has been a lot of attention given to the amount of women, or lack thereof, in the publishing world. Statistics provided by the 2013 Vida Count show that not only should those numbers be much stronger, but so should the representations of women and their variations of sexuality in published works. Roxane Gay writes in the introduction to her 2014 book, Bad Feminist: Essays, “Movies, more often than not, tell the stories of men as if men’s stories are the only stories that matter. When women are involved, they are the sidekicks, the …

¡Probar La Gratuidad! Avital Ronell Y Fiódor Dostoyevski A Propósito De Los Créditos Condonables Del Icetex (To Test Gratuity: Avital Ronell And Fyodor Dostoyevsky In Relation To Student Loans In Colombia), Andrés Henao Castro Feb 2015

¡Probar La Gratuidad! Avital Ronell Y Fiódor Dostoyevski A Propósito De Los Créditos Condonables Del Icetex (To Test Gratuity: Avital Ronell And Fyodor Dostoyevsky In Relation To Student Loans In Colombia), Andrés Henao Castro

Can The Subaltern Smile? Oedipus Without Oedipus, Andrés Henao Castro Feb 2015

Can The Subaltern Smile? Oedipus Without Oedipus, Andrés Henao Castro

Andrés Fabián Henao-Castro

This article explores the relationship between theory and praxis by contrasting three different models of intellectual endeavor: totalizing, particular and decolonial. Attending to the critique that Gayatri Spivak raised against Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze in Can the Subaltern Speak?, this article advocates a dramaturgical reading of texts as a model for political theory to address subaltern agency. It reads such agency in the smile that Pier Paolo Pasolini registers in his 1967 film version of Sophocles’ play, Oedipus Tyrannos. Dramaturgically read, Oedipus reveals another text, the tragic history of a yet insufficiently explored democratic alternative that goes against the …

Rebellion In The Metropolis: George Gissing's New Woman Musician, Laura Vorachek Jan 2015

Rebellion In The Metropolis: George Gissing's New Woman Musician, Laura Vorachek

Laura Vorachek

In his depiction of Alma Frothingham, the female protagonist of The Whirlpool, George Gissing intersects two cultural debates of the fin de siècle: the New Woman and female musical genius. Setting his novel against the backdrop of the specular economy of late-nineteenth-century London, Gissing’s engagement with these debates sheds light on the vexed question of his feminism. His New Woman’s increased autonomy and sexual freedom is evident in her pursuit of a professional music career. Alma believes she has control over her own sexuality and the sexual response her performances elicit in others. However, she does not recognize that by …

La Necropolítica Y El “Mal Menor”: Hacia Una Nueva Economía Del Poder Después De Gaza (Necropolitics And The "Lesser Evil": Towards A New Economy Of Power After Gaza), Andrés Henao Castro Sep 2014

La Necropolítica Y El “Mal Menor”: Hacia Una Nueva Economía Del Poder Después De Gaza (Necropolitics And The "Lesser Evil": Towards A New Economy Of Power After Gaza), Andrés Henao Castro

The Dutch Black Legend, Carmen Nocentelli Aug 2014

The Dutch Black Legend, Carmen Nocentelli

Carmen Nocentelli

English “Hollandophobia” is usually understood as a function or reflection of the rivalries that characterized Anglo-Dutch relations during the seventeenth century. Working against such a circumscribed understanding, this essay contends that Hollandophobia is best thought of as a “Dutch Black Legend”—that is, as a deliberate repetition of the Hispanophobic topoi known as the Spanish Black Legend. Only by acknowledging the intimate relationship between these two phenomena can we make sense of Hollandophobia’s peculiar features while discerning how this discourse helped construct what the English took to be proper Europeanness.

The Aesthetic Of Revolution In The Film And Literature Of Naguib Mahfouz, Nathaniel Greenberg Jul 2014

The Aesthetic Of Revolution In The Film And Literature Of Naguib Mahfouz, Nathaniel Greenberg

Nathaniel Greenberg

In the wake of the 1952 Revolution, Egypt’s future Nobel laureate in literature devoted himself exclusively to writing for film. The Aesthetic of Revolution in the Film and Literature of Naguib Mahfouz is the first full-length study in English to examine this critical period in the author’s career and to contextualize it within the scope of post-revolutionary Egyptian politics and culture. Before returning to literature in 1959 with his post-revolutionary masterpiece Children of the Alley, Mahfouz wrote or co-wrote some twenty odd scripts, many of them among the most successful in Egyptian history. He did so at a time when …

History In The Making: Tunisia's Revolution, Nathaniel Greenberg May 2014

History In The Making: Tunisia's Revolution, Nathaniel Greenberg

Nathaniel Greenberg

ON THE NIGHT of January 24, 2011, I sat smoking shisha and sipping tea at a coffee shop in the downtown Cairo neighborhood of Lazoghly, just blocks from Tahrir Square. The Tunisian revolution had reached a crescendo, but there was little talk of it in this largely working-class neighborhood. With rumors spreading that protests were planned for the coming day, I asked some of the regulars if they thought Egypt could go the way of Tunisia. It was a laughable query. Egypt was too divided, they said, Mubarak too powerful. The following day seemed to confirm their skepticism. No one …

Political Modernism, Jabrā, And The Baghdad Modern Art Group, Nathaniel Greenberg Mar 2014

Political Modernism, Jabrā, And The Baghdad Modern Art Group, Nathaniel Greenberg

Nathaniel Greenberg

In his article "Political Modernism, Jabrā, and the Baghdad Art Group" Nathaniel Greenberg discusses how the art and literature of the late Palestinian novelist Jabrā Ibrahīm Jabrā challenged the normative perception of Arab modernism both within and outside the Middle East. Greenberg evaluates the influence of French existentialism on Jabrā's political vision of modernism and discusses the impact and nature of existentialism on Jabrā and on the Middle East. Educated in Europe, Jabrā returned to the Middle East in 1948 to live permanently in Baghdad where he was a member of the influential Baghdad Modern Art Group, established in 1951 …
