Exploring How Pentecostals Preach About Depression, Robert D. Mcbain
Exploring How Pentecostals Preach About Depression, Robert D. Mcbain
Salubritas: International Journal of Spirit-Empowered Counseling
A qualitative analysis was completed on twelve sermons into how Pentecostal preachers talk about depression from the pulpit using the Assemblies of God (AG) as a purposive sample. Findings illustrate that preachers talked about faulty thinking as the source of depression and interpreted depression as a transformative journey occurring within the context of a God encounter where the believer fixed their faulty thinking. While the way the preachers interpreted depression is not without critique, the article suggests that preaching about depression as a journey of encounter may help listeners frame their depression experiences within a narrative framework that helps them …

Testing The Homiletical Buoyancy Of James K. A. Smith's "Narrative Arc" Approach To The Fall, Logan Patriquin
Testing The Homiletical Buoyancy Of James K. A. Smith's "Narrative Arc" Approach To The Fall, Logan Patriquin
The Asbury Journal
Pastors have long been under-resourced when it comes to deciphering how to craft intelligible, persuasive, and preachable sermons on some newly "settled" Christian academic position, particularly those surrounding the doctrine of the fall in light of contemporary science. The first three chapters of Genesis, along with the New Testament allusions to the edenic creation of humanity, need not inspire near the level of fear and trepidation that ministers have long associated with the public proclamation of human origins. We will examine a new resource in this discussion by James K. A. Smith, make a modification, and then test it in …

Relational Reading For Biblical Discourses: A New Strategy For Preparing Biblical Preaching, Sung-Shin Park
Relational Reading For Biblical Discourses: A New Strategy For Preparing Biblical Preaching, Sung-Shin Park
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this thesis project is to propose a new strategy for preparing Biblical Preaching by demonstrating the value of using Relational Reading (RR). Since preaching is communication between God and His people, preachers must properly handle God’s message, His Word, written for His people. RR is a powerful interpretive tool that can help maintain the integrity of Scripture and assist pastors in their biblical preaching ministry. Theoretical and biblical research was conducted in relevant literature and articles on hermeneutics, homiletics and linguistics. Based on surveys sent to current pastors, the present situation of biblical interpreting and preaching was …
An Other-Typological Illustration Of The Exodus Story According To Dr. King’S Perception Of Universal Reconciliation In His Sermon On Exodus 14:30, Sunggu Yang
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The article contends that Dr King makes an other-typological illustrative use of the Exodus story in his preaching – one of the most significant biblical narratives that the Black church in the US holds dear. This peculiar use of the Exodus story differentiates itself from the conventional typological understanding and use of the same story in the Black church’s history. While in the latter the Exodus story has a symbolic meaning of the irreconcilable conflict between the oppressed and the oppressing reality, in the former the same story contains a spiritual lesson that what is really hoped for in the …

The Midrashic Construct Of Early Christian Texts In Light Of Early Homiletics In The Synagogue, Asher Finkel Ph.D.
The Midrashic Construct Of Early Christian Texts In Light Of Early Homiletics In The Synagogue, Asher Finkel Ph.D.
Rabbi Asher Finkel, Ph.D.
The Gospel preserves the preaching of Jesus as well as his early Jewish followers who penned these works, during the decades before and after the destruction of the Second Temple in the Christian first century. They offer a witness to homiletic midrash as distinct from the exegetical midrash. The latter governs the different approaches to the Biblical text and its wording. This paper was presented at the 15th World Congress of Jewish Studies at Hebrew University in Jerusalem in August 2009.
An Examination Of The Preaching And Teaching Style Of Jesus In Relation To Current Evangelical Homiletics, Daniel Light
An Examination Of The Preaching And Teaching Style Of Jesus In Relation To Current Evangelical Homiletics, Daniel Light
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Much of current evangelical pulpit ministry has veered away from the style and content demonstrated by Jesus in His preaching and teaching. The purpose of this project is to encourage pastoral preachers and teachers to prepare and practice their preaching and teaching according to the model provided by Jesus as revealed in the Gospels. Based on an examination of available literature concerning Jesus’ ministry as a communicator, and interviews with leading evangelical pastors, the project offers personal perspectives and practical advice concerning greater effectiveness in pastoral preaching and teaching by using Jesus as a model.

Hebrew Narrative: Theory For Proclamation, Alan Toenjes
Hebrew Narrative: Theory For Proclamation, Alan Toenjes
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
While acknowledging (enthusiastically!) the close relationship between homiletics and exegesis, this paper will approach Hebrew narratives from the vantage point of the exegete, specifically, that of the Lutheran exegete who confesses Scripture as God's Word of both Law and Gospel. From this point of view, this thesis will posit a hermeneutical understanding of Hebrew narratives as Scripture that will be of value for the preacher.
A fundamental presupposition that this paper shares with the likes of Thompson, Gowan and others, is that it is important to preach on Old Testament texts. It is no secret that this assumption has not …

Since this study is based merely based on two of the verbs used in the New Testament to describe Christian preaching, it does not afford a basis for comparison in regard to all preaching. We shall be describing and comparing Apostolic preaching and present-day preaching only in a restricted area.

Homiletics is that branch of theology which treats of homilies, or the making of sermons. And when I have chosen as my theme "Homemade Homiletics," It means just that. They are sermons which have been prayed over, thought out, worked out, polished off, and put into final form for their delivery by the pastor himself. For while we often hear from our pulpits good, soundly doctrinal sermons, which are both instructive and edifying, yea, at times most inspiring, the making of the sermon has all too often been but a gleaning from what other men have thought through and developed. …

The first question to be decided is, Is the woman of v. 1 Gomer or some other woman? Many varying opinions have been expressed, the text has been changed, passages have been stricken, in an effort to find the answer to this question. Steuernagel's suggestion in support of the identity of the woman in chap. 3 with Gomer, name1y, that originally chaps. 1 and 3 formed an uninterrupted narrative and were later separated by ignorant compilers or editors, is altogether unwarranted and serves to show to what extremes commentators have gone in their efforts to solve this vexing question.

“I will allure her and bring her into the wilderness.'' The loving Husband, His heart filled with love divine, leads His apostate wife into the wilderness. The selfsame God that punished her, vv. 8-13, is the God of love, who has loved her with an everlasting love. When she stands stripped of all her beauty and all her wealth, v. 3, destitute, despised, forsaken by her lovers, a miserable woman, not daring to raise her eyes for shame, then I will "speak comfortably unto her," speak to her heart, so heavy, so sad.
