Testing The Homiletical Buoyancy Of James K. A. Smith's "Narrative Arc" Approach To The Fall, Logan Patriquin Jan 2019

Testing The Homiletical Buoyancy Of James K. A. Smith's "Narrative Arc" Approach To The Fall, Logan Patriquin

The Asbury Journal

Pastors have long been under-resourced when it comes to deciphering how to craft intelligible, persuasive, and preachable sermons on some newly "settled" Christian academic position, particularly those surrounding the doctrine of the fall in light of contemporary science. The first three chapters of Genesis, along with the New Testament allusions to the edenic creation of humanity, need not inspire near the level of fear and trepidation that ministers have long associated with the public proclamation of human origins. We will examine a new resource in this discussion by James K. A. Smith, make a modification, and then test it in …

Soteriology In Mainstream Monotheistic Religions: The Messiah Conundrum, Jay Fox Sep 2018

Soteriology In Mainstream Monotheistic Religions: The Messiah Conundrum, Jay Fox

Masters Theses

For the promotion of the Gospel, this study seeks to examine Soteriology in Mainstream Monotheistic Religions: The Messiah Conundrum. This decidedly charged topic critically researches the philosophy of salvation doctrine, or soteriology, within major monotheistic religions. The highlighted problem is the Messiah conundrum, with critical research on each doctrine for epistemological significance of a savior and their beliefs surrounding salvation. This mystery of where, or who humans turn to for salvation, is vitally important when considering the principle of sufficient reason in today’s hermeneutic and apologetic circles. The purpose fueling this thesis is the resolute documenting of beliefs of major …

Thy Word Is Still Truth: Essential Writings On The Doctrine Of Scripture From The Reformation To Today, Peter A. Lillback, Richard B. Gaffin Jr. Oct 2013

Thy Word Is Still Truth: Essential Writings On The Doctrine Of Scripture From The Reformation To Today, Peter A. Lillback, Richard B. Gaffin Jr.

Alumni Book Gallery

This new collection of Reformed thinkers' writings from the Reformation to today brings together key documents on the inerrancy of Scripture in one readable volume.

One of the hallmarks of Westminster Theological Seminary since its beginning in 1929 has been a high view of Scripture that reflects the historic Reformed theological and confessional tradition. Thy Word Is Still Truth confirms that Westminster still holds this high view.

The book's title builds on the important influence of E. J. Young s classic book on inerrancy, Thy Word is Truth. This current anthology unapologetically borrows that title, emphasizing an abiding commitment …

Jacob's Textual Legacy, John Hilton Iii Jan 2013

Jacob's Textual Legacy, John Hilton Iii

Faculty Publications

Today, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints know what texts are considered authoritative—namely, the standard works. As members, we recognize a formal process for canonization; for example, at the Saturday afternoon session of general conference in April 1976, President N. Eldon Tanner announced that the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve had approved two revelations for inclusion in the Pearl of Great Price and called for a sustaining vote. This concept of canonization in the restored church has echoes from earlier Christian practices and councils.

The Lutheran Confessions And St. Paul's Epistle To The Romans, Mark Wangerin Feb 1978

The Lutheran Confessions And St. Paul's Epistle To The Romans, Mark Wangerin

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper will investigate the use of Scripture by the Lutheran Confessions in their presentation of important Scriptural teachings. Such an undertaking, however, would be monumental in character if some way were not found to limit the scope of the presentation. For this reason, passages from St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans which are quoted in the Confessions will be used as the basis for this study. Most of the passages referred to will be ones which are quoted directly rather than merely cited unless there is some point of interest in the cited passage.

The Concept Of Marriage As Found In Doctrine And Covenants, Section 132:1-33 And Matt. 19:3-8 And 22:23-30: A Comparison Of Latter-Day Saint And Biblical Teachings, Thomas Burton May 1977

The Concept Of Marriage As Found In Doctrine And Covenants, Section 132:1-33 And Matt. 19:3-8 And 22:23-30: A Comparison Of Latter-Day Saint And Biblical Teachings, Thomas Burton

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose in writing this thesis is to attempt to objectively clarify and evaluate the Latter-day- Saint interpretation and application of the doctrinal revelation of marriage for eternity to determine whether it is biblical. The thesis will be divided into three major parts: Part I: The Latter-day Saint Concept of Marriage for Eternity as Derived From Doctrine and Covenants 132:1-33 and Matt. 19:3-8 and 22:23-30: Part II, The Biblical Concept of Marriage Based on Matt. 19:3-8 and 22:23-30; and Part III: A Comparison and Evaluation: of Latter-day Saint and Biblical Concepts of Marriage and Its State After Death.

Titus 3:5 And Baptismal Regeneration, Adrian Leske Jun 1966

Titus 3:5 And Baptismal Regeneration, Adrian Leske

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The aim of this thesis, therefore, is to review the various interpretations of Titus 3:5 and baptismal regeneration throughout the history of the Church, to examine them in the light of their environments, and finally to reach a conclusion as to the meaning of Titus 3:5 and baptismal regeneration on the basis of an exegetical study or the text in its historical background. It is contended that once a true understanding of baptismal regeneration has been reached other problems dealing with baptism will be readily resolved. It is also contended that with a right understanding or baptismal regeneration the danger …

Hermeneutica Sacra- Principles Of Old Testament Interpretation In Seventeenth-Century Lutheran Orthodoxy, Kenneth Miller Jun 1960

Hermeneutica Sacra- Principles Of Old Testament Interpretation In Seventeenth-Century Lutheran Orthodoxy, Kenneth Miller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It therefore became apparent that it would be worthwhile to investigate the hermeneutical principles of the seventeenth-century Lutherans, and to discover what principles they employed in their commentaries and dogmatics. The aim of this investigation, then, is to discover these principles and to evaluate their validity. The questions that naturally arises are such as these: Are the methods of the Old Lutherans consistent? Are they still valid today? Is the Bible used as little more than a source of proof-texts? Did the dogmaticians of that period go too far in seeing Christian doctrines in the Old Testament? Did they make …

The Doctrine Of Man In Genesis, Pyeng Seh Oh Jun 1959

The Doctrine Of Man In Genesis, Pyeng Seh Oh

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is, therefore, the fundamental teaching about man. in the Pre-Mosaic revelation that is dealt with in this thesis. This study will treat both individual man and a group of Men, viz., a society. It is plain from the previous explanation that this study is not limited by the traditional dogmatic division of Christian anthropology. It is a synthetic or systematic exegesis instead of the familiar consecutive exegesis, chapter by chapter, as presented in commentaries. This material will be collected under five cardinal themes on the doctrine of man in Genesis, with each theme displaying disparities and sim1larities or opinion …

An Historical Survey Of The Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit In The Old And New Testaments And Intertestamental Periods, Ralph Frederick Juengel Jun 1956

An Historical Survey Of The Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit In The Old And New Testaments And Intertestamental Periods, Ralph Frederick Juengel

Bachelor of Divinity

Since the Holy Spirit is only referred to explicitly three times in the Old Testament, the reader is amazed that such a jump can be made by John, or Christ for that matter, when speaking about the Holy Spirit, without having to explain just whom they mean. The Jews never take issue with the term in the New Testament. Apparently there must have been some doctrine or teaching prevalent in Christ's day, upon which the fuller revelation is based. The problem of this thesis is to try and find a bridge for the gap between the periods. This demands a …

He Descended Into Hell. An Interpretation Of 1 Peter 3:18-20, Martin H. Scharlemann Feb 1956

He Descended Into Hell. An Interpretation Of 1 Peter 3:18-20, Martin H. Scharlemann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Every Sunday our congregations confess their Christian faith. Each time they use the Apostles' Creed they include in their statement of belief the words "He descended into hell." In recent years this short sentence has come under considerable discussion within our own circles. There has been some question as to the significance of these words as they are used in the Creed. In view of this situation, it is most desirable to re-examine the desconsus in the light of Holy Scripture.

The Problen Of The Apparent Conflict Between Paul And James, Paul Ph Spitz Jun 1951

The Problen Of The Apparent Conflict Between Paul And James, Paul Ph Spitz

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem of the exposition of justification is not, however, the only point on which the Epistle of James and the works of Paul are said to vary. Other difficulties that have been cited include the apostles' supposedly varying concepts of sin, their description of God, and the lack of emphasis regarding Christ in the epistle James wrote as compared to the Christ-centered exposition of doctrine penned by Paul.

On these points, as we shall find in this thesis, the difference lies not so much in the words that are expressed by the apostles, but rather in the scope of …

An Examination Of The Passages In The New Testament Which Speak Of The Royal Priesthood Of Believers, Norman Brauer Jun 1950

An Examination Of The Passages In The New Testament Which Speak Of The Royal Priesthood Of Believers, Norman Brauer

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of this thesis to examine the passages of the New Testament which speak of the Royal Priesthood of Believers. Actually, there are only five instances where the Christian priesthood is specifically mentioned. They are I Peter 2:5; I Peter 2:9; Revelation. 1:6; Revelation 5:10; and Revelation 20:6. All other references to priests or priesthood are either to the priestly office of Christ or to Jewish and pagan priests.

The Doctrine Of The Humanity Of Christ According To The Epistle To The Hebrews, Carl Miller May 1949

The Doctrine Of The Humanity Of Christ According To The Epistle To The Hebrews, Carl Miller

Bachelor of Divinity

To illustrate: if there are five passages that all bring out point "A" of the pre-determined outline of the doctrine, it is not necessary to treat all five passages just to show that point "A" is covered in the epistle. If this procedure seems somewhat arbitrary, we state again that the purpose of this thesis is merely to show how completely the doctrine of Christ's humanity has been revealed in the epistle to the Hebrews.

The Doctrine Of The Resurrection Of The Body As Taught In The Pauline Espistles, Norbert Becker May 1946

The Doctrine Of The Resurrection Of The Body As Taught In The Pauline Espistles, Norbert Becker

Bachelor of Divinity

It is our purpose to present the entire teaching of Paul on the fundamental doctrine of the resurrection. In the course of the positive presentation of Paul's teaching it will become clear that he nowhere contradicts himself but that he is consistent throughout. It will also become evident that Paul's doctrine of the resurrection is in complete harmony with the teachings of Jesus and with other parts of Scripture. When we speak of Pauline theology, therefore, we simply refer to the doctrines contained in Paul's epistles.

The Doctrine Of The Atonement In The Synoptic Gospels, John H. Geisler May 1946

The Doctrine Of The Atonement In The Synoptic Gospels, John H. Geisler

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper is to prove that the synoptic Gospels teach the vicarious atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Chargis A Study On The Word For Grace In The New Testament, Robert Zorn May 1938

Chargis A Study On The Word For Grace In The New Testament, Robert Zorn

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The scope of this present study is not to be distinctly Doctrinal, or historical, tracing the doctrine of grace and its various aberrations, through history, much as such a study would be interesting and instructive. That would take us too far afield. It is our purpose to confine ourself to an examination of the word χ͔χ́ρ͔ις itself, and to trace its use in the New Testament. Seeing the importance of the Doctrine of Grace, it is essential that we study the divinely revealed record, to see how the word is used. This must ever be the basis for all doctrine, …

The Work Of The Holy Ghost In The Pauline Epistles With Special Reference To Enthusism, Norbert Mueller Apr 1938

The Work Of The Holy Ghost In The Pauline Epistles With Special Reference To Enthusism, Norbert Mueller

Bachelor of Divinity

Ever since the beginning of the Christian Church, Satan has tried to corrupt also this precious doctrine. In this treatise we shall consider, above all, one perversion of the doctrine of the work of the Holy Ghost, namely, the error of Enthusiasm, which our Confessions describe as the folly of "fanatical men, who dream that the Holy Ghost is given not through the Word, but because of certain preparation of their own, if they sit unoccupied and silent in obscure places, waiting for illumination, as the Enthusiasts formerly taught and the Anabaptists now teach.”

Predestination According To Ephesians 1, 3-14, Delvin Ressel Apr 1938

Predestination According To Ephesians 1, 3-14, Delvin Ressel

Bachelor of Divinity

The last of these expressions shall form the basis for the outline of the present treatise, in this slightly altered form: "Eternal election of grace in Christ Jesus responsible for all the spiritual blessings of Justification, conversion, sanctification, and preservation." Part One will deal with, the Decree of Election, or Election in Eternity, while Part Two will deal with the Execution of this Decree, or Election in Time. Each part will treat the respective terms of the definition according to "Definition" and. "Proof."

A Few Remarks On Col. 2, 18. 19 A, L. T. Wohfeil Jun 1937

A Few Remarks On Col. 2, 18. 19 A, L. T. Wohfeil

Concordia Theological Monthly

This verse has tried the patience of commentators, both ancient and modern, quite consistently. While many have been content to give what seemed to them the most plausible interpretation, a by no means negligible number of others have unwittingly admitted finding their "Waterloo" at this very verse by resorting to conjectures on account of a supposedly corrupt text, though there are, with only one unimportant exception, no variant readings. Like the suicide they consider conjecture the "man's way out,” but seem to forget that tampering with the MS. record may lead to equally serious consequences.

The Resurrection Of The Body In The Old Testament - An Exegetical Study, Allen Schuldheisz May 1935

The Resurrection Of The Body In The Old Testament - An Exegetical Study, Allen Schuldheisz

Bachelor of Divinity

It will be the object of the following treatise to present, in a brief way, some of the Scriptural evidence from the O.T., showing that the believers of the Old Covenant held fast to the hope or a resurrection as a cardinal article of their faith.

Sermon Study On 1 Tim. 4, 4-11, T. Laetsch Oct 1934

Sermon Study On 1 Tim. 4, 4-11, T. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the opening verses of the fourth chapter the apostle had stated that in the latter times errorists would arise setting aside the norm of God's Word both as to doctrine and life.

Outline For A Sermon On The Presentation Of The Augsburg Confession, W G. Polack May 1930

Outline For A Sermon On The Presentation Of The Augsburg Confession, W G. Polack

Concordia Theological Monthly

The circumstances leading up to the completion of the Augsburg Confession have been discussed in the foregoing sermon of this series. We shall therefore turn our attention to the events connected with its presentation at the Diet of Augsburg June 25, 1530.
