Aids To Bible Study: The Hebrew Old Testament, Frederick W. Danker Dec 1958

Aids To Bible Study: The Hebrew Old Testament, Frederick W. Danker

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is regrettable that Hebrew is gradually fading out of the academic picture. Seminaries are decreasing their requirements in this area, and its study is being left more and more to the elective inclinations of the student. To the remnant in Israel, however, this chapter in Aids to Bible Study is dedicated in the hope that it may encourage some to return to Zion and exhilarate others as they stand on the ramparts and catch the vision of fresh and exciting interpretive possibilities in their Hebrew texts.

The Eschatology Of Acts And Contemporary Exegesis, Robert H. Smith Sep 1958

The Eschatology Of Acts And Contemporary Exegesis, Robert H. Smith

Concordia Theological Monthly

For half a century New Testament exegesis has stood at the center of a storm over eschatology, and the eye of this storm is not all calmness. Two different exegetes skillfully and deliberately lay open the same passage of Scripture and arrive at conclusions that collide head on. Scholars disagree not only concerning what the New Testament says but especially about what the New Testament means in its eschatological statements.

The Christian And Petting, Kelsey E. Hinshaw Sep 1958

The Christian And Petting, Kelsey E. Hinshaw

Historical Quaker Books

Excerpt: "This article is called forth by the following considerations: There is the desire, first, to answer the stock remark of so many young people, ''What's the harm? Everybody does it." - and second, to arouse the church of today to a realization of what is happening. Our homes and home influences are at an all-time low. Divorce, the "white slave" trade, and the illegitimate birth rate are, according to government statistics, at or near all-time highs. Competent authorities conservatively report that in one U. S. city alone hundreds of girls disappear each day of the year never to be …

The Study Of The Messianic Secret In St. Mark, Robert Strickert Jun 1958

The Study Of The Messianic Secret In St. Mark, Robert Strickert

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The general purpose of this thesis is to provide an historical survey of the hidden Messiahship of Jesus in the Gospel According to St. Mark. At the beginning of the present century William Wrede gave this theological problem the appropriate label, "The Messianic Secret." In the almost sixty years that have passed since the time of Wrede, this problem has presented a challenge to a number of scholars. These scholars have offered various answers and solutions. The approach in this thesis will be to present the views that have been held by some of these men.

The Eschatology Of The Book Of Acts, Robert Smith Jun 1958

The Eschatology Of The Book Of Acts, Robert Smith

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The method employed in this thesis is what someone has described as phenomenological in contrast to genetic. This paper is interested in the eschatology of the Book of Acts in its present state. Nowhere does this study attempt to isolate the eschatology of the primitive church in the city of Jerusalem, or the eschatology of the Hellenistic community, or the eschatology of Paul according to the Acts.

The Christology Of The Seven Letters In Revelation Chapters Two And Three, With Special Reference To Possible Relationships Between The Author's Self-Designations And The Subject Matter Of The Letters, Ewald Otto Jun 1958

The Christology Of The Seven Letters In Revelation Chapters Two And Three, With Special Reference To Possible Relationships Between The Author's Self-Designations And The Subject Matter Of The Letters, Ewald Otto

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study does not attempt to add to the material on the history of the congregations or to the analyses of their graces and defects, zeal and lukewarmness. Rather, a portion of what: has been written was restudied from the standpoint: of the relationship between the self-designation3 and the contents of the letters against the backdrop of the Christology of the Apocalypse.

The biologist and the physicist must begin with certain assumption~. To claim otherwise reveals ignorance and vanity. The theologian, too, must begin somewhere. This study assumes that the Bible is the Word of God, that an inspiration without …

He Learned Obedience, Hebrews 5:18, Charles Froehlich Jun 1958

He Learned Obedience, Hebrews 5:18, Charles Froehlich

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this paper has been to arrive at the meaning of Hebrews 5:7-10 and more specifically. To answer the question: What does it mean when the text says that “Christ learned obedience” (verse 8)? Was Christ “sufficiently human”·to learn anything? If so, what was He able to learn?

Mishpat And Zedeq In The Eighth-Century Prophets, James P. Rath Jun 1958

Mishpat And Zedeq In The Eighth-Century Prophets, James P. Rath

Bachelor of Divinity

We have attempted, in this thesis, to find the sources and authorities most competent to lead us along the way toward understanding what progression of revelation actually did take place in the writings as we have them from the eighth century. That there are other authorities which perhaps should have been consulted should not be denied; but we feel that the presentation as it is here sufficiently proves that these prophets were truly led by God to make a great advance over their predecessors.

The Kingdom Of God In The Old Testament, Robert Edward Wolter Jun 1958

The Kingdom Of God In The Old Testament, Robert Edward Wolter

Bachelor of Divinity

The sole purpose of this thesis is to trace the origin of the Kingdom of God from the beginning of time, creation, to the time of Christ. The development of the Kingdom of God will be traced through four specific areas: the Patriarchal, the Mosaic, the Royal, and the Prophetic. Within each of these areas it should be kept in mind that God is using people to spread His Kingdom. The fourth chapter will give a brief summary of the Jewish concept concerning the Kingdom. As for reference to the Covenant Idea, the Son of Man in Daniel, the Suffering …

The Terminology In Philippians Directed To, And Influenced By, Local Conditions, W Gail Rabe Jun 1958

The Terminology In Philippians Directed To, And Influenced By, Local Conditions, W Gail Rabe

Bachelor of Divinity

The reader of the New Testament is ever aware that the Book he is reading has been written under the inspiration of God. He is not merely reading the results or man's wisdom, but he is opening his mind and heart to receive God's revelation of judgment and mercy presented in written words through the agents whom He Himself appointed. This often results in misunderstanding regarding the Biblical view of inspiration. Questions such as these often arise: “If this is God's Word, what part does the human author play?” "Is this inspiration a mechanical rendering whereby the author loses all …

A Study Of The Anacolutha In The Pauline Corpus, Raymond Carl Schulze Jun 1958

A Study Of The Anacolutha In The Pauline Corpus, Raymond Carl Schulze

Bachelor of Divinity

Any writing of great import must subject itself in time to the close scrutiny of the student, even though it may have been intended originally for the interested reader alone. A close look at the Pauline epistles indicates, in many instances at least, grammatical inconsistencies of such a nature that the meaning of the text is obscured to a greater or lesser degree. The anacolutha in the Pauline epistles present such a problem.

The Problem Of The Oracles To The Nations In Jeremiah, Elmer Reimnitz Jun 1958

The Problem Of The Oracles To The Nations In Jeremiah, Elmer Reimnitz

Bachelor of Divinity

Critics have attacked the authorship of Jeremiah in large scale. Some try to make his writings only half of the actual book. Others try to throw out smaller sections and separate verses. The section of the book of Jeremiah which has received the strongest attacks is the section often referred to as the oracles to the nations. In this thesis we will consider the various problems raised up by the critics.

Some Problems Of First Peter, Robert E. Boyette Jun 1958

Some Problems Of First Peter, Robert E. Boyette

Graduate Thesis Collection

This study is an introduction I to some of the problems found in First Peter. The first chapter will be devoted to the presentation of the traditional view of authorship. Does the epistle come to us with the authority of the chief of the apostles? Tradition says yes. The second chapter questions the traditional view. Some scholars have questioned or rejected the verdict of tradition. In the third chapter the problem of the spirits in prison will be considered. Scholars disagree relative to this interpretation. What is meant by preaching to the spirits in prison? Who are these spirits? What …
