Luke 17: 20-21 In Recent Investigations, Paul M. Bretscher
Luke 17: 20-21 In Recent Investigations, Paul M. Bretscher
Concordia Theological Monthly
This is the significant passage recorded only by Luke and rendered in the KJ version: "When He was demanded of the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God should come, He answered them and said: The Kingdom of God cometh not with observation; neither shall they say, Lo, here! or, Lo, there! for, behold, the Kingdom of God is within you." The passage poses a number of linguistic and exegetical difficulties.

The Place Of Prayer In The Sanctification Of Christian Life, James G. Manz
The Place Of Prayer In The Sanctification Of Christian Life, James G. Manz
Concordia Theological Monthly
Prayer, in and by itself, makes no one holy. It is only the person who is already holy in Christ who truly prays. One's whole conception of Christianity can be perverted if one begins to speak about prayer without first relating it to the Word of the Gospel. A word of warning from Luther is in place as we begin to consider the subject of this paper: But I would counsel you, if you wish to pray, fast, or establish some foundation in the Church, take heed not to do it in order to obtain some benefit, whether temporal or …
An Evaluation Of Adult Confirmation Materials, Frederick Koehler
An Evaluation Of Adult Confirmation Materials, Frederick Koehler
Bachelor of Divinity
Working with adults has proved to me an enjoyable and rewarding experience. This thesis is written with a desire to help give adults that which has proved to be a blessing to me and to fulfill in their lives this same joy which they may have never known.
The author does not pretend to be an authority on this subject matter, but is writing on adult confirmation materials merely because of his love in this field. Neither does he intend to exhaust all the material related to this paper, but merely to present an overview in order to evaluate some …
Form-Criticisim: A Critique And An Evaluation, Robert Jaeger
Form-Criticisim: A Critique And An Evaluation, Robert Jaeger
Bachelor of Divinity
The present thesis cannot do full justice to that comprehensive title for the simple reason that the field of form-criticism is far too broad and complex for the writer to treat it exhaustively in one paper. This thesis will attempt in part to delineate for the reader what form-criticism is and how it works.

Paul's Concept Of Christ As The Wisdom Of God, Bernhard Kurzweg
Bachelor of Divinity
Our purpose, then, will be an objective comparison of the functions of Paul's Sophia with the personal Chokmah. The logos of John will frequently enter in by way of comparison. The close relationship between the three will be evident throughout.
Peirasmos In The New Testament - Its Exegetical And Theological Implications, Delwin B. Schneider
Peirasmos In The New Testament - Its Exegetical And Theological Implications, Delwin B. Schneider
Bachelor of Divinity
It is the aim of this study to present the Christian doctrine of temptation as it is found in the words Πeιpόςw and Πeιpθθwός in the New Testament. The terms appear frequently upon its pages. It is my purpose to study these appearances as they are found in the original text and upon such a study formulate the basic New Testament conception of temptation.
The Problen Of The Apparent Conflict Between Paul And James, Paul Ph Spitz
The Problen Of The Apparent Conflict Between Paul And James, Paul Ph Spitz
Bachelor of Divinity
The problem of the exposition of justification is not, however, the only point on which the Epistle of James and the works of Paul are said to vary. Other difficulties that have been cited include the apostles' supposedly varying concepts of sin, their description of God, and the lack of emphasis regarding Christ in the epistle James wrote as compared to the Christ-centered exposition of doctrine penned by Paul.
On these points, as we shall find in this thesis, the difference lies not so much in the words that are expressed by the apostles, but rather in the scope of …
The Words Of Institution- An Exegetical Study, Reuben A. Kruggel
The Words Of Institution- An Exegetical Study, Reuben A. Kruggel
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The words of institution for the Lord's Supper can be taken absolutely literally. The only words which require any interpretation are “body” and “blood." These can be interpreted only in the light of the concept of "communion.” On the basis of the text and in harmony with the Lutheran confessions this leads to three points, often called the Shibboleths of the doctrine.
The Meaning And Significance Of The Suffering And Death Of Christ As Found In I Peter, Norman Brauer
The Meaning And Significance Of The Suffering And Death Of Christ As Found In I Peter, Norman Brauer
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This paper is an exegetical study of the eight passages in this Epistle which have a. reference to the blood, suffering, or sacrifice of Christ. The purpose of this thesis is to arrive at an understanding of the meaning and significance of the work of Christ according to Peter’s First Epistle. In chapters two, three, and four the writer will examine particularly those passages which state the doctrinal viewpoint of Peter concerning the suffering and death of Christ. In the remaining three chapters the writer will endeavor to determine the significance that the Apostle places upon the passion of Christ; …

The Temptation Of The Church: A Study Of Matt. 4:1-11, Jaroslav J. Pelikan Jr.
The Temptation Of The Church: A Study Of Matt. 4:1-11, Jaroslav J. Pelikan Jr.
Concordia Theological Monthly
This brief essay purposes to examine the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness, not so much the problems1which this narrative poses for the area of dogmatics we call Christology (though these are considerable), but the way the story highlights some of the most profound temptations to which the Church and its ministers are subject. For in the three questions which the devil put to Jesus, as Dostoevsky observed, "the whole subsequent history of mankind is, as it were, brought together into one whole, and in them are united all the unresolved historical contradictions of human nature."

A Study Of The Epistle To The Hebrews In The Light Of The Basic Principles Of Biblical Typology, F. Clifford Johnson
A Study Of The Epistle To The Hebrews In The Light Of The Basic Principles Of Biblical Typology, F. Clifford Johnson
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
For a number of years the writer of this thesis has been wanting to make a study of typology as found in God's Holy Word, to determine what types are, or are not. The purpose of this study was to clearly set forth the basic principles which govern types in the Scriptures as presented by various reliable sources, and to use these as a guide in this study of the Epistle to the Hebrews. This work has been limited to this Epistle, first, because its contents are largely a fulfillment of types, and secondly, because the field of typology would …
The Pessimism Of Ecclesiasties, Frederick W. Danker
The Pessimism Of Ecclesiasties, Frederick W. Danker
Concordia Theological Monthly
Much of the literature published on Ecclesiastes in recent years stresses the pessimistic tone of the book. It is felt that the author's philosophy of life is permeated with a sense of futility and hopelessness in the face of historical events and the experiences of individuals. The purpose of this essay is to challenge the validity of such an interpretation and establish the proposition that Ecclesiastes is indeed pessimistic, but more profoundly so than is generally indicated. An analysis of his own statements indicates that his entire approach is based on a consideration of man's total depravity. God, however, aims …
The Houchen-Tatum Debate, Hoyt H. Houchen, Ray Tatum
The Houchen-Tatum Debate, Hoyt H. Houchen, Ray Tatum
Stone-Campbell Books
On December 26-29, 1950, Hoyt H. Houchen, a Church of Christ minister, and Ray Tatum, a Baptist pastor, engaged in debates on four topics: the establishment of the church, baptism, apostasy, and premillennialism. These debates are transcribed in this book, compiled and published by Houchen. Each speaker's arguments and rebuttals are given, as well as an index of Scriptural references from each speaker.
