Composing The Book Of Jeremiah: Relocating The Oracles Against The Nations In The Masoretic Text, Brenna C. Salverson Apr 2023

Composing The Book Of Jeremiah: Relocating The Oracles Against The Nations In The Masoretic Text, Brenna C. Salverson

Honors College Theses

The thesis conducts a textual critical analysis of the Book of Jeremiah’s placement of the oracles against the nations in the Masoretic Text and Septuagint. The following questions will be explored: 1) are the oracles against the nations a late addition to Jeremiah? 2) does the Masoretic Text relocate the oracles against the nations? and 3) do keywords and phrases that occur in the oracles against the nations appear in the content preceding and following the oracles in the Masoretic Text and Septuagint? Implications of the questions include the radical scribal decision to rearrange the Book of Jeremiah and the …

A Critical Comparative Scriptural Analysis Of Genesis 1:1-5 Based On Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Greek, And Coptic Manuscripts, Edens Elveus Jan 2019

A Critical Comparative Scriptural Analysis Of Genesis 1:1-5 Based On Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Greek, And Coptic Manuscripts, Edens Elveus

CGU Theses & Dissertations

A translation of Gen. 1:1-5 may seem to be both close and far at the same time from the original Hebrew text because of historical, geographical, theological, cultural, philological, and linguistic reasons. The scribes who translated the biblical narrative of the creation of light from Hebrew to a lingua franca of their time had a translation technique. They knew what they were doing. They provided a translation that the people of their time (d’alors) could understand, depending on a consideration of the milieu where they lived, and the jargon used to express their ideas – straight or in a zigzag …

A Foreign Text In A Foreign Land, Dylan A. Vernon Jan 2014

A Foreign Text In A Foreign Land, Dylan A. Vernon

Honors Projects

The Bible has passed through different languages and cultures, and in the process the words of the text lose their original meaning and gain new meanings. This process influences the way that commentators interpret the biblical text. This study looks at the Hebrew verb פתה that appears in Hosea 2:16, the Greek verb πλανω that translates פתה in Hosea 2:16, and the Latin verb lacto that translates פתה in Hosea 2:16. This study then looks at the interpretations of Hosea 2:16 by three commentators, Rabbi Shlomo ben Issac (Rashi), Theodore of Mopsuestia, and Nicholas of Lyra. Rashi read the Hebrew …

Ransomed/Redeemed - At What Price A Study Of The Λυτρον Group Of Words, Frederick Schmitt May 1997

Ransomed/Redeemed - At What Price A Study Of The Λυτρον Group Of Words, Frederick Schmitt

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

A major problem in word studies is how much of the meanings and implications found in earlier word usage carries over into later usage, or in moving from one language to another. Today when we use the words "ransom" or "redeem" many of the aspects common to their usage 200 years ago will not be inferred or understood by today's average hearer. Nor is it likely that most of the nuances of the corresponding biblical Greek and Hebrew terms for "ransom" and "redeem" would be picked up by today's audience. But was there a significant change in understanding in these …

A Study Of The Old Testament Quote In Matthew 27:9, 10, Curtis Giese May 1991

A Study Of The Old Testament Quote In Matthew 27:9, 10, Curtis Giese

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Upon examining the Old Testament quotations in the Gospel of Matthew, one observes that their wording occasionally differs from that of the Hebrew Masoretic Text,(MT) the Septuagint (LXX), or any other known text. Matthew27:9, 10 is an especially striking example of this occurrence. Such deviation is immediately surprising because Jews and Christians contemporary to Matthew held the words of the Hebrew Old Testament, duly represented by the present Masoretic Text, in high esteem.' In addition, the Septuagint held a position at that time as a respected translation of the Hebrew.2 One questions, therefore, why the deviations exist in the Gospel …

Aspects Of The Calendar Of The Hebrew Bible And Its Theological Significance, Charles Blanco May 1990

Aspects Of The Calendar Of The Hebrew Bible And Its Theological Significance, Charles Blanco

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of the thesis is twofold. We endeavor to provide the exegetical base for the understanding of the calendar used by God's4people in the Old Testament. There is, of course, a certain heuristic value to our topic for Old Testament studies at large. Beyond that, we find our study to be unique in its approach. Apart from the confessional position outlined above, we came to the texts without any preconceived notions about the nature, structure, and use of the Hebrew calendar. Conversely, the vast majority of works on the calendar are undertaken to prove a particular point of view. …

A Study Of The Root Hesych- In The New Testament, John Armstrong May 1990

A Study Of The Root Hesych- In The New Testament, John Armstrong

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this paradigmatic study is to compare and contrast hesychazein with similar terms such as sigan and siopan. To what extent are these words synonymous, and to what extent are they not? This is an example of the lexical field approach in which the meaning of a given word is not considered as an independent unit but as a component in the structure of a field of related words. Jost Trier, the pioneer of lexical field theory, has said that the value of a word is first known when it is marked off against the value of neighboring …

The Speech Of James In Acts 15, Ronald Jones May 1978

The Speech Of James In Acts 15, Ronald Jones

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

As one considers the quotation from Amos in Acts 15:16-18, he discovers that the text in Acts 15 differs from the text in the Septuagint , and that the Old Testament Greek text, in turn, differs radically from the Hebrew text. An explanation for the differing readings may depend on Qumran materials and rabbinic literature, in both of which the quotation from Amos occurs in Messianic contexts.

The decree in Acts 15:20 also raises questions, since some commentators have argued for an original reading with two or three prohibitions instead of the four as given in the Eberhard. Nestle text. …

Ezekiel 40-48, Gerald White May 1967

Ezekiel 40-48, Gerald White

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The author's interest in the book· of Ezekiel and its problems was kindled in a previous study involving an exegetical analysis of six passages selected from the first thirty-nine chapters of the book. These problems may be classified under the headings of (1) authorship and authenticity, and ( 2) interpretation. The study now proposed involves the investigation of these literary and theological problems in order to determine (1) to what extent the passage under consideration may be attributed to the prophet and how much must be ascribed to one or more editors, (2) the relation between this section of the …

The Relationship Of The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ To His Work Of Reconcilliation In The Light Of The Covenant Idea, Kenneth Block

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The problem which this thesis investigates is the relationship of the resurrection of Jesus Christ to His work of reconciliation. The study of this .question is significant because the relationship of these two articles of faith has central importance in God's redemptive acts of salvation.

The author contends that the relationship between resurrection and reconciliation can be seen in the key idea of a covenant. The concept of a covenant is significant in the Old Testament. The Mosaic covenant is the most explicit example. The New Testament writers were thoroughly imbued with Old Testament concepts. To understand the import of …

A Grammatical Study Of The Passive Voice In The Synoptic Gospels, David Moke May 1964

A Grammatical Study Of The Passive Voice In The Synoptic Gospels, David Moke

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this investigation is to examine the use of the passive voice in the Synoptic Gospels. Every verb in the Synoptic Gospels that occurs in the passive voice is examined without exception to determine if it is used to cover or veil the divine name of God or God's divine activity. This idea was suggested by the Index of Subjects of the Blasa-Debrunner-Funk Grammar. Under the subject of the Passive (voice) is listed the use of the passive "to avoid the divine name. 112 It was also noted that Joachim Jeremias in two of his works quite often …

The Use Of The Old Testament In The Sermons Of Acts, Robert C. Schultz Jun 1952

The Use Of The Old Testament In The Sermons Of Acts, Robert C. Schultz

Bachelor of Divinity

The Church’s attitude toward Scripture is reflected in its use of Scripture. This thesis is an attempt to discover the principles which controlled the early church’s use of Scripture. The investigation centers on three points: 1) the text of the Old Testament used by the early church; 2) the early church’s purpose in quoting Scripture; 3) generea1 principles of interpretation followed by the early church. The investigation is restricted to the use of the Old Testament in five sermons recorded in the book of Acts. Since the scope of the investigation is limited, only tentative conclusions can be obtained.

Matthew's Method Of Quoting The Old Testament, Lorenz Otto Nieting May 1947

Matthew's Method Of Quoting The Old Testament, Lorenz Otto Nieting

Bachelor of Divinity

In examining Matthew’s use of the Old Testament, we are immediately confronted by the problem of the language that he uses in quoting the Old Testament. The problem simply stated is to find out whether Matthew used the Hebrew, the Septuagint, an Aramaic version, or extant Greek version of the Old Testament: or if he used a number of these versions. In the case of the latter we shall try to determine under what circumstances Matthew used the one or the other version.

Biblical Concept Of Διαθηϗη, Elmer Griesse Jun 1943

Biblical Concept Of Διαθηϗη, Elmer Griesse

ΔιαθηϏη is a key-word in Scripture, used to describe the relationship of God to man and man to God. There can be nothing more valuable for man than a right relationship to God. With God, man is supremely happy, without God man is totally unhappy, and is doomed to eternal unhappiness and misery.

St Paul's Use Of The Word Πνευμα, Paul Meyer Apr 1938

St Paul's Use Of The Word Πνευμα, Paul Meyer

Bachelor of Divinity

No one who studies the writings of St. Paul for any length of time can fail to note the frequent recurrence of this word and the importance which attaches to a correct understanding of its various shades of meaning. It occurs 149 times in the thirteen letters commonly ascribed to Paul, and, while there is in a study of Paul's conception of ηνε̂υμα a rich supply of material for investigation alike by the philosopher, the philologist, and the theologian, it is in the last field that its greatest value lies. Without a correct understanding of what Paul meant by the …
