Theme And Structure In Isaiah 28-33 A Unified And Coherent Reading Centered On Chapter 30, G. Vincent Medina May 2009

Theme And Structure In Isaiah 28-33 A Unified And Coherent Reading Centered On Chapter 30, G. Vincent Medina

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Medina, G. Vincent “Theme and Structure in Isaiah 28–33: A Unified and Coherent Reading Centered on Ch. 30.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2009. 260 pp.

This dissertation represents an attempt to demonstrate that Isaiah 28–33 is a compositional unity with structural and thematic coherence. Beginning with the widely recognized structuring function of the six hôy-oracles found in this section of Isaiah (Isa 28:1; 29:1; 29:15; 30:1; 31:1; 33:1), the dissertation seeks to discover a deeper and more comprehensive structuring principle. It argues that Isaiah 30 is the center of Isaiah 28–33, and that 30:15–18 is the central passage. This thesis …

Philo Of Alexandria's Exposition Of The Tenth Commandment, Hans Svebakken Jan 2009

Philo Of Alexandria's Exposition Of The Tenth Commandment, Hans Svebakken

Dissertations

As part of a larger exposition on the Ten Commandments, Philo offers in Spec.4.78b-131 a detailed exposition of both the Tenth Commandment, which he reads simply as "You shall not desire," and the Mosaic dietary laws, which he identifies as a distinct set of subsidiary laws designed to promote observance of the Tenth Commandment. Setting his exposition in the context of Middle-Platonic moral psychology, this dissertation answers two fundamental questions: First, what, in Philo's view, does the Tenth Commandment prohibit? (All desire? A certain type? What type?) Second, how, in Philo's view, is the Tenth Commandment observed? (What are the …

The Remnant Motif In The Dead Sea Scrolls, Franklin A. Marti Jan 2009

The Remnant Motif In The Dead Sea Scrolls, Franklin A. Marti

Papers

In this research I will try to answer the following questions: Do the men at Qumran consider themselves the remnant of their time? Which are the implications that could be drawn from the perspective of considering themselves the remnant of God? What biblical support did they use? What were their religious lifestyle and characteristics as the remnant? How was their relationship with others and, at the same time, how did they consider others in relationship to God?

Grace To You And Peace: An Analysis Of The Pauline Letter Openings., João Paulo Thomaz De Aquino Jan 2009

Grace To You And Peace: An Analysis Of The Pauline Letter Openings., João Paulo Thomaz De Aquino

CTS Master of Theology (ThM) Theses

This thesis argues that the Pauline letter opening has an anticipatory function alongside its relational role. This anticipatory function is a development of the epistolary features found in the ancient Greek letter openings. After the introductory chapter, is provided an analysis of form and function of ancient (III BCE to III CE) Greek letter prescripts. Chapters 3 and 4 provide a formal and functional analysis of the Pauline letter prescripts. The conclusion is that the anticipatory function works in two ways in the Pauline letters. First, Paul encapsulates his theology in the expression ‘grace to you and peace’ and uses …

What The Korean Presbyterian Church Can Learn From Contemporary Debates About Infant Communion Among Reformed Christians In North America., Hwa Rang Moon Jan 2009

What The Korean Presbyterian Church Can Learn From Contemporary Debates About Infant Communion Among Reformed Christians In North America., Hwa Rang Moon

CTS Master of Theology (ThM) Theses

Can children participate in the Lord’s Supper? This practice was prohibited at the fourth Lateran Council; however, at the end of the 20th century, among Reformed churches in North America and some Europe Churches, debated the validity of infant communion or children’s communion. Is, then, infant communion or children’s communion biblical? What was the practice of the early New Testament church? Can infants or children have faith and enough cognitive ability to discern the body of Christ? Many biblical scholars, systematic theologians, church historians and local church pastors participate in this debate. Both the Christian Reformed Church and Reformed Church …

"The Limitless Horizons Of Prolixity": The Contemporary Relevance Of Kierkegaard's Critique Of Biblical Exegetical Method And Practice, Bruce P. Baugus Jan 2009

"The Limitless Horizons Of Prolixity": The Contemporary Relevance Of Kierkegaard's Critique Of Biblical Exegetical Method And Practice, Bruce P. Baugus

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation seeks to demonstrate that Soren Kierkegaard's critique of biblical exegetical methods and practices, and corresponding proposal, offers an interesting and relevant contribution to the current debate on biblical exegetical methods and practices taking place within the contemporary theological turn in biblical interpretation. The contemporary theological turn in biblical interpretation is represented in this dissertation by Timothy H. Polk, an important interpreter of Kierkegaard's exegetical method within the post-liberal tradition, and Kevin J. Vanhoozer, a leading contributor to the theological turn in contemporary biblical exegesis. Despite significant advances in understanding Kierkegaard as an explicitly Christian thinker there remains a …

An Exegesis Of 1 Corinthians 12:31 - 13:1-3, Gregory Congote Osb Jan 2009

An Exegesis Of 1 Corinthians 12:31 - 13:1-3, Gregory Congote Osb

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

At the presentation on 1 Corinthians, I wondered why the Apostle Paul had written this piece that did not seem to be connected to the whole letter. This paper gives response to this question. The first part talks about the basic historical, social, cultural and literary contexts of the passage. The second, which is the formal analysis, considers the literary genre and the literary form of the passage, its structure and its movement. That is, how the text flows from beginning to end. The detailed analysis is a verse-by-verse discussion of 12:31 to 13:1-3. At the end there is a …

Ego Eimi Formula And A Sense Of Continuity In John’S Gospel Chapter Sixth (Jn 6: V.20, Vss.35-58), John Changjin Bai Jan 2009

Ego Eimi Formula And A Sense Of Continuity In John’S Gospel Chapter Sixth (Jn 6: V.20, Vss.35-58), John Changjin Bai

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper examines John’s Gospel chapter six (vs.20, vss.35-58) in light of the formula “ego eimi (“I am”) that occurs four times within it. The formula shapes the content of chapter six and gives continuity to the two sections (vss.35-50 and vss.51-58) that have generated theological disagreements. My goal is to demonstrate that the sacramental perspective implicit in the first section is made explicit in the second with ego eimi being the hinge in vs.51. Ego eimi will be shown as revelatory and as developing the eucharistic and sapiential themes of chapter six (vs. 20, vss. 35-58).

Developing A Model For An Incarnational Ministry At The Webb Chapel Church Of Christ, L. Bert Alexander Jan 2009

Developing A Model For An Incarnational Ministry At The Webb Chapel Church Of Christ, L. Bert Alexander

Doctor of Ministry Theses

This doctor of ministry thesis presents the results of a project to promote the development of an incarnational ministry at the Webb Chapel Church of Christ. This intervention employed a team of Webb Chapel opinion leaders representative of various subgroups of the congregation. In the fall of 2008, this group met for eight sessions to discuss the self-emptying practices of Jesus and the need for his followers to emulate those self-emptying practices in their individual lives. Through interaction in the eight sessions, the group developed a model by which self-emptying practices could be implemented at Webb Chapel. Evaluation of the …

Biblical Revision Both Ancient And Modern, Jamie Christine Willeford Jan 2009

Biblical Revision Both Ancient And Modern, Jamie Christine Willeford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Biblical revision has been a part of the Jewish tradition since the Bible began to be canonized in the Second Temple period. Many authors throughout the centuries have seen fit to revise the biblical text: creating a new literary genre that is in this paper termed "rewritten Bible." Maxine Grossman's literary critical method, as advocated in Reading for History in the Damascus Document: A Methodological Method, helps us to understand the different types of meaning that can be created from a text, including meaning that is created outside the intent of the author, as it is in the genre …

Why Two Swords Were Enough: Israelite Tradition History Behind Luke 22:35-38, Kevin Lee Moore Jan 2009

Why Two Swords Were Enough: Israelite Tradition History Behind Luke 22:35-38, Kevin Lee Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Jesus' charge in Luke 22:35-38 that his apostles should buy swords is one of the most enigmatic texts in the gospels. Although previous studies made use of a wide range of standard critical methods, none of these approaches satisfactorily revealed the pericope's meaning. In a fresh re-examination of Luke's sword-logion this project interweaves biblical and cultural intertextuality and asserts that the sword-logion is a Lukan literary foil that repudiates a well-known hagiographic tale. The provenance for this legendary saga (i.e., the "two-sword" traditum) was Gen 34 whose routine refraction in later Jewish writings led to its inclusion as part …

Old Testament Contributions To Ecclesiology: Engaging And Extending The Insights Of John Howard Yoder, John C. Nugent Jan 2009

Old Testament Contributions To Ecclesiology: Engaging And Extending The Insights Of John Howard Yoder, John C. Nugent

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

Conspicuously absent from ecclesiological literature is a volume dedicated exclusively to assessing the Old Testament‘s relevance to ecclesiology. With only a few exceptions, scant use is made of the Old Testament in ecclesiological primers and that use tends to be highly selective and often decontextualized. This dissertation argues that indepth engagement of the Old Testament furnishes a helpful context for ecclesiological reflection and that John Howard Yoder‘s canonical-directional approach to Scripture exemplifies such engagement. Though Yoder did not dedicate a treatise exclusively to the Old Testament‘s ecclesiological relevance, his numerous scattered essays on this topic evince a rich and coherent …

Cultic Allusions In The Suffering Servant Poem (Isaiah 52:13-53:12), Kyesang Ha Jan 2009

Cultic Allusions In The Suffering Servant Poem (Isaiah 52:13-53:12), Kyesang Ha

Dissertations

This study investigates the Hebrew cultic allusions in the Suffering Servant Poem (Isa 52:13-53:12) in order to discover the nature or meaning of the suffering of Yahweh's Servant. The survey of literature reveals that the background of the Suffering Servant Poem is to be found in the Hebrew cultus. Thus the nature or meaning of the Servant's suffering is determined by a penetrating as well as comprehensive study of the text, specifically from the Hebrew cultic perspective. However, there has never been any careful, comprehensive study of the cultic allusions in the Poem in connection with the Suffering Servant. This …

Ordination Training For Bi-Vocational Clergy In The United Cornerstone Churches International, Inc. Of Thomasville, North Carolina, George Bernard Jackson Jan 2009

Ordination Training For Bi-Vocational Clergy In The United Cornerstone Churches International, Inc. Of Thomasville, North Carolina, George Bernard Jackson

Doctor of Ministry Projects

In many rural communities there exists a stereotype about clergy education perpetuated since slavery. This project offered bi-vocational clergy opportunities to be equipped, empowered and certified for servant leadership. Data captured from 2006 through 2008 was taken from the 25 ordinands. Questions that guided this study were grouped into two sets: examination by quantitative measurements through the passing of a catechism; and by qualitative measurements from personal and telephone interviews. The results of the research revealed a discrepancy in the ordination process where prerequisites and retention studies must play a greater role for future ordinands.

Using "Chaos" In Articulating The Relationship Of God And Creation In God's Creative Activity, Eric Michael Vail Jan 2009

Using "Chaos" In Articulating The Relationship Of God And Creation In God's Creative Activity, Eric Michael Vail

Dissertations (1934 -)

Out of dialogue with Old Testament studies and the sciences, there has been a rise in recent years in the use of "chaos" language by theologians in their articulation of a theology of creation. There has been little uniformity in how the word is used among the fields, or even within some fields—especially by biblical scholars doing ancient Near East comparative studies. Under the umbrella of this popular terminology, some ideas have found refuge whose theological implications warrant evaluation.

Within this dissertation the range of ideas that fall under "chaos" within the physical sciences, Old Testament studies, and theology is …
