Jesus And The Gentiles In The Gospel Of Matthew: A Historical Study Of The Redemption Motif, Young Jin Kim May 1992

Jesus And The Gentiles In The Gospel Of Matthew: A Historical Study Of The Redemption Motif, Young Jin Kim

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

To obtain the proper understanding of Jesus' relation to the Gentiles in the Gospel of Matthew, the following objectives should be met: our study shall deal with (1) the Old Testament passages pertinent to our subject, (2) every Matthean passage which provides explicit or implicit information on our theme, (3) the salvation-historical significance of the text, and (4) the total context of the Gospel.

A form-critical approach with its presuppositions is not in order for our study since this approach fails to meet objectives three and four. A redaction-critical approach which has been the dominant discipline in recent Matthean scholarship …

The Priesthood Of All The Baptized:An Exegetical And Theological Investigation, Thomas Winger May 1992

The Priesthood Of All The Baptized:An Exegetical And Theological Investigation, Thomas Winger

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

For all the emphasis placed on the "priesthood of all believers" as an article of faith, very little critical research has been done into its exegetical, dogmatic, and historical foundations. In his monumental study, John Elliott notes that a detailed exegetical treatment of 1Peter 2 had never before been done in the history of Christianity. 2 Yet he declines any attempt to relate his conclusions to a "dogma" of priesthood. The most extensive historical study, undertaken in two volumes by Cyril Eastwood, attempts to trace the influence of this doctrine in the history of the church, but it fails to …

Assessing Patterns Of Disengagement And Re-Entry In Two Local Congregations Of Churches Of Christ, David Mitchell Malone May 1992

Assessing Patterns Of Disengagement And Re-Entry In Two Local Congregations Of Churches Of Christ, David Mitchell Malone

Doctor of Ministry Theses

This study investigates two congregations among Churches of Christ with a prototype instrument adapted from questions used in a national survey (The Unchurched American, The Princeton Religion Research Center, 1978). The ministry objective for this project thesis is to generate an assessment instrument to be used as a tool for ministry between active and inactive church members.

Specific questions addressed are: what are the patterns of disengagement and re-entry in two local congregations connected with Churches of Christ? Is the disengagement of teenagers and young adults (age 13-24) in each local congregation measurably greater than other recognized age categories over …

The Annals Of Obadiah: A Record Of The Wars And Peace Treaties In The History Of Its Interpretation, Joel Elowsky May 1992

The Annals Of Obadiah: A Record Of The Wars And Peace Treaties In The History Of Its Interpretation, Joel Elowsky

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is the contention of this thesis, that in the war over Obadiah's interpretation, the translator and the historian could, by and large, sign" peace treaties" of agreement. The theologian and the homiletician, however, were engaged in nothing less than a battle to the death. The questions regarding translation and isagogics were two areas where Jewish and Christian interpreters could find much agreement and even help from the other side. The questions regarding fulfillment, significance and application of the text, however, found little if any agreement. If anything, they only helped to fuel the anomysity between the two sides which …

The Use Of Nśʼ In The Pentateuch And Its Contribution To The Concept Of Forgiveness, Gudmundur Olafsson Jan 1992

The Use Of Nśʼ In The Pentateuch And Its Contribution To The Concept Of Forgiveness, Gudmundur Olafsson

Dissertations

This study investigated the use of the root nśʼ in the Pentateuch in an attempt to discover its semantic relationship to the concept of forgiveness. Survey of the available literature revealed a near vacuum in this area, apart from a couple of careful but brief treatments. Other studies were either very cursory or only partially relevant to the present study. Most writers tend to relegate the concept of forgiveness to the derived meaning of "remove" without substantiating it exegetically.

Cognate languages affirmed the existence of the root and its range of meanings. The widest range of meanings and closest affinity …

The Eschatological Judgment In Job 19:21-29 : An Exegetical Study, Gordon E. Christo Jan 1992

The Eschatological Judgment In Job 19:21-29 : An Exegetical Study, Gordon E. Christo

Dissertations

Practically all scholars today acknowledge the juridical features of the book of Job. The purpose of this study is to identify the legal event that Job is understood to believe would take place in the eschaton.

Chapter 1 first analyzes the significance of the place of our passage in the structure of the book. Job 19 is found to be the center of a structurally balanced composition. Further study of structure reveals that v s s . 25-27b can be viewed as: (1) the heart of the chiasm in 19:21-29, (2) the node of that speech, and (3) a pivot …

Hearing The Voices Of The Good News, George Edward Mayer

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The intent of this thesis is to demonstrate that the art of biblical storytelling is a means to effect a fresh hearing of the gospel. The thesis will be established in four ways: 1. By reporting the personal history of the author with biblical storytelling in a contemporary parish. 2. By examining the need for a fresh hearing in the way biblical storytelling relates to contemporary hermeneutics and homiletics. 3. By creating a homiletical process including biblical storytelling, congregational discussion, sermon, and sermon feedback. 4. By reporting and analyzing the results of the storytelling/homiletical process over a six week period …

The Person Of Paul: A Study In The Apostle's Ethical Appeal, John W. Marshall Jan 1992

The Person Of Paul: A Study In The Apostle's Ethical Appeal, John W. Marshall

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Understanding Paul’s ethos is essential to understanding the persuasive power of Paul’s writing. This thesis uses Paul’s letter to the Philippians as a test case for the study of Paul’s appeal through ethos. The guiding body of theory for the study (Chapter 2) is classic rhetoric, especially as developed by Aristotle, Cicero, Quintilian, and the Rhetorica ad Herrenium. The results of this chapter are a working definition of ethos for the purposes of study, and an understanding of the relationship of ethos to the deliberative genus. Chapter 3 provides an introduction to the basic questions which affect any detailed study …
