The Solidarity Of The New Israel, Herbert Mayer Jun 1957

The Solidarity Of The New Israel, Herbert Mayer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The New Testament Israel, or ecclesia, has been the subject of exhaustive study in recent years. A pressing question in this field is that of the relationship between the solidarity of the Israel of the Old and New Testaments. Some have held that there is no particular significance in this relationship. They regard the New Testament Church as the pure product of the teachings of Jesus without any antecedents whatever. Others have found the New Testament Church to be the essential continuation of the Old Testament Israel. The truth, as usual, lies between these extreme positions. A proper understanding of …

The Teacher Of The Righteousness And His Relationship To Jesus Christ, Norman Habel Jun 1957

The Teacher Of The Righteousness And His Relationship To Jesus Christ, Norman Habel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

More specifically we wish to examine-and delineate a. certain name which figures prominently in the Qumran literature. That name is "Teacher of Righteousness.”• Accordingly, we wish to uncover what kind of person ( or persons) it is who bears this mask “”Teacher of Righteousness,” and discover how he ( or they ) and the rest of the movement think. What are the basic beliefs, and controlling concepts championed by these Qumran students? This is the leading question! This question, however, can never be divorced from the question to which it leads, viz., how does the thought world of Qumran and …

From such a confrontation two basic questions arose-: What does St. Mark tell us about the miracles? and, What do the miracles tell us about Jesus Christ? This study is an attempt to answer these two questions.

The Social Responsibility Of The Local Congregation To Its Community, Alvin H. Franzmeier

In doing this the study aims primarily at definitions of the Church and the community and the tasks, goals and motivation of both. On the basis of these definitions it strives to set forth certain principles that a local Church and its leaders might use as they seriously consider the various social problems in their community.

The Christology Of St. Mark, Roy Blumhorst Jun 1957

The Christology Of St. Mark, Roy Blumhorst

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper will be to attempt an analysis of the Christology presented in the Gospel according to St. Mark. This Gospel has been widely used for Christological studies for good reasons. The fact that this Gospel is generally considered to be the earliest of the four would make its testimony of prime importance in investigating the actual historical evidence about. Jesus of Nazareth. The very nature of the Gospel according to St. Mark is another factor in using it as a basic record. Luke may be considered to excel in the beauty of narrative, John in his …

Not Discerning The Body In 1 Corinthians 11:29 In The Light Of Pauline Eucharistic Theology Of 1 Corinthians, Ralph C. Kruger

Bachelor of Divinity

Theological trends determine the specific emphases of the confessional doctrines of the Church. As throughout the history of the Church when new trends and theological postulates appear, the student of theology is called upon to examine carefully their content on the basis of Scripture in order to reject or absorb these propositions into his own theology. Twentieth century theology, captivated by the ecumenical movement, is engaged in renewed study of the particu1ar doctrines of the Church and Sacraments. The purpose of this thesis is to present for the reader's evaluation a brief study of a phrase from 1 Cor. 11:29 …

The Meaning Of The Passion In The Light Of The Word Pictures Used By Jesus, Arthur F. Gronbach Jun 1957

The Meaning Of The Passion In The Light Of The Word Pictures Used By Jesus, Arthur F. Gronbach

Bachelor of Divinity

Since these word pictures were taken from the heritage of the people of His day and therefore had a certain meaning before Jesus used them, it appears a fair inference that Jesus Himself had a definite purpose in using precisely the terms that He did. Undoubtedly He intended to convey a special meaning to His disciples through those terms. The discovery of that meaning should help illuminate Jesus' passion for us. This thesis, then, will attempt to answer two questions. First, what was there in the meaning of those expressions that caused Jesus to use them in predicting and describing …

The Unadopted Witness Of P46 In The Nestle Text Of Galatians, Colossians, And I Thessalonians And Its Treatment In The Rsv, Walter A. Ritter Jun 1957

The Unadopted Witness Of P46 In The Nestle Text Of Galatians, Colossians, And I Thessalonians And Its Treatment In The Rsv, Walter A. Ritter

Bachelor of Divinity

Ever since textual critics could examine the latest discovery of New Testament manuscripts reported in 1930, the Chester-Beatty papyri intrigued them like a child with a new toy. The high quality of the text of the Pauline codex, called P46, was immediately apparent, and critics began to wonder how much of the “established” Greek text would need revision in the light of this wonderful discovery. This thesis is an evaluation of a limited number of the variant readings in that important manuscript.

Alexander Campbell's Principals Of Interpretation Of Interpretation As Seen In His Conception Of The Church, George Estes Jun 1957

Alexander Campbell's Principals Of Interpretation Of Interpretation As Seen In His Conception Of The Church, George Estes

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In this thesis our purpose has been to formulate, define and illustrate those rules Alexander Campbell compiled and applied in reaching conclusions and decisions on the meaning of Bible passages referring to the Church, rather than to give a full exposition of his conception of the pertinent doctrines. The examples, therefore, are taken from those sections of Campbell’s writings where we found the rules used or referred to, on such subjects as baptism, The Lord's Supper, the covenants or any other subject that is included in the doctrine of the church.

The Essential Elements Of The Sinaitic Covenant, Holland Jones May 1957

The Essential Elements Of The Sinaitic Covenant, Holland Jones

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In the study of the New Testament Kerygma we can recognize that the life, death, resurrection, and exaltation are one great act of God by which He made the New Covenant. However in our study of these events we separate them for convenience. So in our study of the Old Covenant we can recognize that the deliverance, giving of the Law, ratification of the Covenant, and conquest of Canaan are one great act of God by which He made the Old Covenant. But here too we separated these events for the purpose of clarity in investigating them. And for want …

An Inquiry Into The Time Elements Of The Fifth And Sixth Trumpets Of Revelation Nine, Robert Lee Mole Jan 1957

An Inquiry Into The Time Elements Of The Fifth And Sixth Trumpets Of Revelation Nine, Robert Lee Mole

Master's Theses

Statement of the problem

It was the purpose of this investigation, (l) to discover whether the dates as given in the Litch-Smith view of Revelation the ninth chapter, which ends the times of the fifth and sixth trumpets on August 11, 1840, agree with both the Bible and history; and if not, (2) to determine whether a solution is possible that would agree with both factors in view of the criticism presently leveled at the Litch-Smith view. This criticism is based on the seeming inability to find historical facts to support this view, and also on the exegesis of the …
