On The Verge Of The Millennium: A History Of The Interpretation Of Revelation, Craig R. Koester

The power of a book can be seen in its effects, and few books have had more dramatic effects than Revelation. Attempts to control the effects of the book by ignoring it or dismissing it have not been successful; Revela- tion’s secrets are too alluring. We do better to consider the effects the book has had on Christians over the centuries and to let this history of influence help shape a way to read the book that is both faithful and compelling.

Imago Dei And The Appreciation Of Beauty, Michael S. Jones Apr 1995

Imago Dei And The Appreciation Of Beauty, Michael S. Jones

SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations

"Man does not live by bread alone ... " Human life embraces more than just 'living' (material survival); the human soul thrives on many ambiguous metaphysical elements. One of these elements is beauty. The question motivating this article is the ubiquitous 'why'; why do people find beauty in various elements of their environment? Put another way, what is it that enables one to appreciate beauty? The thesis of this article is that a person's ability to appreciate beauty is a result of being created in the image of God.

Who Needs Doctrines? Jesus Is Coming!, P. Gerard Damsteegt Jan 1995

Who Needs Doctrines? Jesus Is Coming!, P. Gerard Damsteegt

The name “Seventh-day Adventist” reveals the major characteristics of the remnant church, highlighting the importance of the Sabbath and the second advent. From time to time one hears the opinion that these are really all that matter and that all other doctrines or fundamental beliefs are really not that crucial. Over the years, it seems, doctrine has gotten a bad reputation. Some feel we harp too much on doctrine and not enough on love. Others feel doctrines don’t save, only Jesus does. Still others would intimate that doctrines make us “legalistic” and “behavior-oriented.”

Rhetorical Strategy In The Composition Of The Pentateuch, James W. Watts Jan 1995

Rhetorical Strategy In The Composition Of The Pentateuch, James W. Watts

Religion - All Scholarship

The Hebrew Bible rarely depicts the reading of books or documents, but when it does, it usually portrays public readings of entire law codes. Whether by Moses, Joshua, Josiah or Ezra, law readings to public assemblies play prominent roles in various biblical books. It is not my intention in this essay to discuss Israel's tradition of law readings in depth, but rather to explore its implications for the form of Israel's extant laws as found in the Pentateuch. The tradition of public law readings points out the rhetorical function of law in ancient Israel. The accounts of readings depict these …

Samuel, Patrick And Cato: A History Of The Dallas Fire Of 1860 And Its Tragic Aftermath, William R. Farmer (1921-2000)

Perkins Faculty Research and Special Events

In this unpublished work, William R. Farmer (1921-2000), former associate professor of New Testament at Perkins School of Theology, recounts the story of the Dallas Fire of 1860 and the events that followed: the hanging of three innocent African American men and the whipping of many local slaves. Farmer’s work explores the causes of these acts of racial terrorism by presenting and discussing numerous primary resources. Accompanying the book manuscript is a related work: “A Reader for the Study of the Dallas Fire of 1860.” Both documents were created in the late 1990s.

Mary And The Biblical Heritage Jan 1995

Mary And The Biblical Heritage

Selected Works of Lawrence E. Frizzell

Throughout the ages, the Church and her teachers often acknowledged that the fourfold Gospel offers only a limited number of passages that feature the Mother of Jesus. Undaunted, the great doctors of the early Church and the theologians of the Middle Ages found abundant resources for their meditation concerning Mary in the Jewish Scriptures and literature related to the New Testament. The theological premise that God is the principal author of the entire Bible led them to find hints and images of the Messiah everywhere. Recognizing that the link of Jesus to the people of Israel is Mary, his Mother, …

The Tears Of God: A Theological Investigation, The Institute Of Judaeo-Christian Studies

Teshuvah Institute Papers

In 1981, when colleagues of Professor Ignaz Zangele invited Msgr. John M. Oesterreicher to contribute to a festschrift honoring the former's 75th birthday, the latter wrote Die Tranen Goetts, which has appeared only in German in that festschrift.

To mark May 7, 1995, the day on which a library suite is being dedicated to honor Msgr. Oesterreicher's memory, the Institute of Judaeo-Christian Studies has published this English version entitled, The Tears of God.

Reading Texts As Reading Ourselves: A Chapter In The History Of African American Biblical Interpretation, Vincent L. Wimbush

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Literature, especially religious literature, ideally aims to trigger degrees of empathy in readers who share a particular universe of meaning, with the goal of entertaining, provoking, challenging, and persuading. The literary text that has achieved something of the status of a "classic" is one that has consistently--that is, "beyond its time...beyond its space"--proved to be engaging and empathetic, consistently challenging and inspiring the spirit, provoking thoughts and arresting the imagination of those generally sharing a universe of meaning, or culture. But such texts, precisely because of their empathy-producing qualities, should also inspire among readers again and again over time a …
