In general, anti-Jewish bias in the Christian community does not go back to the New Testament (NT) itself (since its authors were Jews) but arises shortly afterward through misreadings of ambiguous passages written by these Jews. What often passes for anti-Jewish sentiment in the NT is excerpted from a dispute within the Jewish community as to what it means to be a good Jew. When cited later by non-Jews, Paul's and John's passionate wording leant itself easily to anti-Jewish interpretation.The issues in Jewish-Christian relations from 30-100 CE are complex for several reasons. Whether he knew it or not, Mel Gibson touched on theological traditions formed long after the lifetime of Jesus in his movie, The Passion of Christ. To have them shape a movie that purports to tell a story set during the lifetime of Jesus – even if only in his last twelve hours – adds a confusing kind of anachronism to Gibson’s effort to “tell it like it was.” It (the movie) is as it (the history) wasn’t.To understand the place of the Temple in the lifetime and the piety of Jesus of Nazareth, we have to look beyond later …
