Implicaţiile Formei Botezului În Contextul Eclesial, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor Nov 2011

Implicaţiile Formei Botezului În Contextul Eclesial, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

Even though the water baptism is unanimous accepted in all religious denominations as an act which offers the quality of a church member, however, not every church officiates it in the same manner. Because is accepted by all the religious denominations, we can ask if a religious group accepts the baptism officiated by another religious group and in what conditions this thing may happen. Or, which churches accept the baptism officiated by churches with a different doctrine? Which are the immediate connotations of the baby’s baptism and of the adult’s baptism? What does imply the baby’s baptism and the adult’s …

Paul's Vision Of The Risen Lord, Brian Schmisek Apr 2011

Paul's Vision Of The Risen Lord, Brian Schmisek

Brian Schmisek

Paul, the one New Testament author who states clearly that Jesus appeared to him, has been cited as one who understood the resurrection of Jesus as fleshly, or physical. This article examines whether Paul himself understood the result of what happened to Jesus after his death to be a physical reality akin to the return of Jesus alive in the flesh. By investigating the three passages in which Paul refers to his own life-changing experience of the risen Christ (Gal 1:16; 1 Cor 9:1; 1 Cor 15:8), the article shows that there is just as much evidence to argue that …

Reading The Story Of Miriai On Two Levels: Evidence From Mandaean Anti-Jewish Polemic About The Origins And Setting Of Early Mandaeism, James F. Mcgrath Feb 2011

Reading The Story Of Miriai On Two Levels: Evidence From Mandaean Anti-Jewish Polemic About The Origins And Setting Of Early Mandaeism, James F. Mcgrath

James F. McGrath

New Testament scholars, drawing on Mandaean sources to shed light on the Gospel of John, may have done more harm than good to both Johannine and Mandaean studies. Nonetheless, approaches to the Gospel of John developed over the past 50 years have shed light on the Gospel’s Jewish context and the clues its polemical emphases can provide about the time and setting in which it was written. J. L. Martyn’s suggestion that the Gospel of John can be read on “two levels”, telling us about the context in which it was written while telling a story set in the time …

On Hearing (Rather Than Reading) Intertextual Echoes: Christology And Monotheistic Scriptures In An Oral Context, James F. Mcgrath Feb 2011

On Hearing (Rather Than Reading) Intertextual Echoes: Christology And Monotheistic Scriptures In An Oral Context, James F. Mcgrath

James F. McGrath

While recent studies of the New Testament have found the methods of intertextuality and orality studies to be fruitful approaches, there has been insufficient interplay between the two. This article explores the capacity of hearers of texts to pick up on echoes of familiar texts, stories, and songs. Using as an example Paul’s interpretation of Scripture in connection with the topics of monotheism and Christology, the article suggests that, in the absence of explicit and emphatic statements of the difference or distinctiveness of his views, Paul’s allusions to key monotheistic texts would have been understood to indicate Paul’s agreement with …

From Luke To John: Lazarus, Mary, And Martha In The Fourth Gospel, Keith L. Yoder Dec 2010

From Luke To John: Lazarus, Mary, And Martha In The Fourth Gospel, Keith L. Yoder

Keith L. Yoder

Here I examine John’s Raising of Lazarus and Anointing of Jesus texts and explore literary parallels with Luke’s Lazarus and Mary/Martha texts. I show first that there is a significant and orderly array of such parallels between the Luke and John texts, constituting strong evidence of inter-textual influence between Luke and John. I then show that this relationship is literary rather than oral, and that the literary dependence flows from Luke to John. This paper was not accepted for presentation by the panel moderator.
NOTE of 2 July 2017: I will be revising this essay this year to take …

Leadership Principles In 2 Corinthians, Gregory A. Smith Dec 2010

Leadership Principles In 2 Corinthians, Gregory A. Smith

Gregory A. Smith

Paul’s relationship with the church at Corinth provides a detailed leadership case study. This is nowhere clearer than in 2 Corinthians, where every chapter displays Paul’s leadership attitudes and practices. Proceeding from the assumption that Paul’s leadership is worthy of emulation, this guide summarizes his behavior under eight headings:

• Accountability & Integrity

• Mission-Centeredness

• Investment in Followers

• Accurate Self-Concept

• Weakness & Adversity

• Assertiveness & Gentleness

• Advocacy

• Shared Responsibility
