Divine Attributes: Knowing The Covenantal God Of Scripture, Sherene Nicholas Khouri
Divine Attributes: Knowing The Covenantal God Of Scripture, Sherene Nicholas Khouri
Eleutheria: John W. Rawlings School of Divinity Academic Journal
John C. Peckham, Divine Attributes: Knowing the Covenantal God of Scripture, Baker Academic, 2021. ISBN 9781540961259. 336 pages. $29.99.
Peckham’s latest book, Divine Attributes: Knowing the Covenantal God of Scripture is a study in theology proper, which deals with God’s nature and attributes. Peckham clearly sets forth the main elements of the divine attributes by explaining God’s Aseity, immutability, qualified passibility, omnipresence, eternity, omniscience, foreknowledge, omnipotence, providence, faithfulness, and omnibenevolence. He also dedicates a chapter to the doctrine of the Trinity and ends the book with a quest for covenantal theism.
The Prophecy Of Prophecies: Correcting Harold Hoehner’S Interpretation Of Daniel’S 70 Weeks, Nathan Jarrett
The Prophecy Of Prophecies: Correcting Harold Hoehner’S Interpretation Of Daniel’S 70 Weeks, Nathan Jarrett
Eleutheria: John W. Rawlings School of Divinity Academic Journal
Attacks against the Bible’s divine inspiration are rampant in today’s society. One of the most popular apologetic methods used to defend the doctrine of inspiration is messianic prophecy. Though many predictions fulfilled by Jesus Christ have been identified, no prediction found in the Old Testament is quite as precise or as controversial as the prophecy of Daniel’s 70 weeks. While various interpretations of Daniel 9:24-27 have been promoted, this article defends the interpretation popularized by Harold Hoehner as the most convincing. Though Hoehner may have provided the most accurate interpretation historically, the purpose of this article is to correct mistakes …
Jesus Christ Is Fully God, Not Just Fully Man, A. G. Erum
Jesus Christ Is Fully God, Not Just Fully Man, A. G. Erum
Eleutheria: John W. Rawlings School of Divinity Academic Journal
Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) is a big religious organization that began in the Philippines and is spreading across the globe. INC teaches that Jesus Christ, as the Son of God is a very special man only and not God. They claim this by using their interpretation of biblical passages, such as John 8:40, Luke 24:38-39, and 1 Timothy 2:5. Contrary to the Scriptures and Christian traditions, they believe that the only true God is God the Father, who is the only Creator of the universe. However, the Scriptures (especially the New Testament) and Christian traditions demonstrate that Jesus is God-Man. …
Where Does Obedience To Government End? Understanding Romans 13:1–7, Carleton Hafer
Where Does Obedience To Government End? Understanding Romans 13:1–7, Carleton Hafer
Eleutheria: John W. Rawlings School of Divinity Academic Journal
Rom 13:1–7 is the primary passage in the Bible on governmental obedience, yet it is often interpreted out of context. The purpose of this article is not only to provide exegetical guidelines, but also practical application of the biblical mandates. The thesis of this article is that that when properly interpreted in its historical context that Rom 13:1–7 is not a strict prohibition against disobeying the government, but that when possible it is desirable to maintain good relations with governmental authorities. This analysis is especially relevant today when church leaders must consider whether or not to obey commands by the …
Rabboni: Christ's Resurrection Through The Eyes Of Mary Magdalene, Thomas J. Gentry Ii
Rabboni: Christ's Resurrection Through The Eyes Of Mary Magdalene, Thomas J. Gentry Ii
Eleutheria: John W. Rawlings School of Divinity Academic Journal
In John 20:1-18, Mary Magdalene (hereafter, Mary) holds a significant place in the resurrection narrative. She is the first to tell the disciples of the empty tomb (vv. 1-10), and she experiences a direct encounter with the resurrected Jesus (vv. 11-18). Given the significance of these events, the purpose of this essay is to explore John’s record of Mary’s report of the empty tomb and her dialogue with the risen Jesus. The discussion entails a brief overview of each encounter with special consideration for their apologetic significance. The relevance of Mary’s testimony in these matters is also considered from the …
How The Canaanite Conquest Is An Important Case Study In Understanding The Goodness Of God, Sarah D. Stewart
How The Canaanite Conquest Is An Important Case Study In Understanding The Goodness Of God, Sarah D. Stewart
Eleutheria: John W. Rawlings School of Divinity Academic Journal
This paper attempts to provide a case study to respond to the problem of evil. The paper employs the example of the Canaanite conquest and argues that, contrary to popular attacks against the character of God, this event in scripture actually demonstrates His goodness. It is an example of a time when God delayed His response to the evil perpetrated by the Canaanites as well as His liberation of the Israelites from Egypt because doing so resulted in a greater moral good than would an earlier intervention. In so doing, it examines an issue frequently cited as problematic for Christians …

A Bible Study Series: The Family-Centered, Church-Supported Paradigm Shift For Raising Children In The Faith At Salem Lutheran Church, Michael J. Nielsen
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Nielsen, Michael J. “A Bible Study Series: The Family-Centered, Church-Supported Paradigm Shift for Raising Children in The Faith at Salem Lutheran Church.” Doctor of Ministry. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2021. 160 pp.
In many Christian churches there is the question: “How do we keep our children after confirmation?” The answer is a simple one: Parents. This MAP examines the relationship of the family and the church when it comes to raising children in the faith. Biblically parents are called to be the primary faith formers in the lives of their children. A multi-part Bible study was created to teach …
Heavenly Clothing Liturgically Worn: The Clothing Metaphor In The Book Of Revelation As Exegetically Performed In The Byzantine Liturgical Rite, Elias Issa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Problem
The subject of these hermeneutical and performative approaches to the biblical texts and the liturgical dimensions and metaphors in the Book of Revelation are of particular interest to this dissertation, whose ultimate goal is to ask how the Byzantine rites, as practiced in the Orthodox Church, actualize the liturgical dimensions of the Book of the Revelation. The question will focus on a case study of the clothing metaphor as used in Revelation and related apocalyptic texts.
Method
The question of this dissertation is framed within this context of the liturgical performative exegesis. The question will be approached in its …

The Great Commission: An Exegetical And Theological Study Of Matt 28:16-20 In The Northern Nigeria Context, Vincent K. Sebastine
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
ABSTRACT
Scholars refer to the passage on Matthew 28:16-20 as the “Great Commission”. It concludes the last part of the Gospel of Matthew (26:1-28:20), that is, Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection. In the Great Commission scene – on the mountain in Galilee (Matt 28:16), Jesus speaks to his disciples about his authority, commissions them to make disciples - by baptizing and teaching - and gives them an assurance of his abiding presence. This passage contains several themes – mountain, worship, authority and nations – which relate to the Gospel and other text in the Bible. It is pertinent to note …
Contrarrestar La Homofobia Basada En La Biblia Y Culturalmente Establecida: ¡Lo No-Africano Se Encuentra Con Lo InequíVoco!, Jeremy Punt
Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer
On the African continent the argument that homosexuality is un-African is often used in tandem with the claim that the Bible unambiguously condemns homosexuality. This article suggests that the link between the un-African and unambiguous positions largely depends on hard-core heteronormative positions informed by debilitating homophobia. Amidst a seeming impasse in debates, biblical hermeneutics which includes attention for ancient and modern contexts, moves beyond selective texts and incorporates recent research on human sexuality and can contribute towards debunking Bible-based, culturally-ensconced homophobia in Africa.

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer
Except for South Africa, sub-Saharan African countries criminalize same-sex relationships, although the call for acceptance increases. The «pro» and the «anti» -same-sex relationships camps use the Bible. However, investigating the texts shows a selective use of the Bible to entrench one’s already accepted position. The questions addressed in this article are: do Africans resist same-sex relationships purely based on the teaching of the Bible, or are there other factors at play? Several African scholars examining those texts expose the weaknesses inherent in their use to resist same-sex relationships. The analysis critically reflects on the use of the Bible in the …
Art As Contextualization: Using Visual Communication As Christian Missions In Native American And Alaskan Cultures, Hali Gehring
Art As Contextualization: Using Visual Communication As Christian Missions In Native American And Alaskan Cultures, Hali Gehring
Senior Honors Theses
Contextualization is an important aspect of Christian ministries and cross-cultural missions to create sustaining churches around the world. There are many forms of communication that use contextualization for religious purposes, such as theatre, story, art, and dance. These important forms of communication can be used with cultural practices to contextualize the Gospel to different people groups. For Native Americans and Alaskans, artistic works that promote cultural heritage are highly regarded. A beadwork piece that explains the Gospel could be a creative way to contextualize to Native American and Alaskans.

Schultz, David, MA. “Equipping lay elders with the spiritual care skills of active listening, sharing scripture, offering prayer, and providing follow up at St. Paul Lutheran Church Wood River, IL.” Doctor of Ministry. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2022. 122 pp.
Spiritual care is vitally important for all people. Unfortunately, too often those who are commissioned to provide spiritual care lack the necessary skills to help others. This MAP explores how a lay elder seminar might equip the lay elders of a congregation with the spiritual care skills of active listening, sharing scripture, offering prayer, and providing follow up. This …

Gospel Impact And Stewardship Tool (Gist): Visual Mapping To Discover Gospel Imperatives For Strategic Ministry Decisions, Martin Edward Lee
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Lee, Martin Edward “Gospel Impact and Stewardship Tool: Visual Mapping to Discover Gospel Imperatives for Strategic Ministry Decisions.” Doctor of Ministry. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2021. 260 pp.
This research project and the resulting Gospel Impact and Stewardship Tool (“GIST”) addresses congregational stewardship deficits from a systems perspective, with a shared-stewardship imperative for all leaders and members of a congregation, instead of focusing stewardship on the individual. The GIST Ministry Map provides a visual picture of how individual ministries are interconnected. This project illustrates how a learning environment, and the GIST visual ministry mapping process, help improve strategic decision-making …

This paper examines the themes of relationship and faithfulness as they are presented through the motif of God as the shepherd of his people. Furthermore, it examines the significance of the passage within the context of the broader Biblical canon, concluding with a brief examination of both historical and contemporary applications.

Luke And Legacy: Bruce Lincoln And The Construction Of Jesus's Prophet-Like Authority In The Gospel Of Luke, Kendall Joseph Mayo
Luke And Legacy: Bruce Lincoln And The Construction Of Jesus's Prophet-Like Authority In The Gospel Of Luke, Kendall Joseph Mayo
MSU Graduate Theses
In his gospel, Luke uses various identity markers in his description of Jesus (Son of God, Son of Man, Davidide, etc.). One of the primary markers that Luke uses for Jesus is “prophet,” and this marker serves Luke’s historiographical purpose of identifying Jesus as the culminating figure in Israelite history. A significant body of work has already been produced discussing the areas where Jesus is shown to act like a prophet. However, this thesis will continue the discussion by looking at the places where Jesus is shown to “bust” the prophetic mold by doing and saying things that prophets normally …

Theological Practices For Sustaining Community Renewal At Speedway Church Of Christ, Kent A. Ellett
Theological Practices For Sustaining Community Renewal At Speedway Church Of Christ, Kent A. Ellett
Doctor of Ministry Theses
This project assembled a group of potential small-group facilitators for the purpose of drafting a small-group discussion guide to be used at the Speedway (Indiana) Church of Christ. The guide was intended to aid the discernment of missional practices which sustain the renewal of the wider community. Focusing on the Gospel of John, the intervention attempted to recover a temple Christology, construing the incarnation, ministry, death, and the lifting up of Jesus within the larger story of the temple’s ongoing re-creation of the world. In bestowing his glory upon the church, Jesus sends the church into all the world, as …

Fear And Loathing In The Technological City, Michael Paulus
Fear And Loathing In The Technological City, Michael Paulus
SPU Works
This presentation brings together three interpreters of the city—Jacques Ellul, Hunter S. Thompson, and John of the Apocalypse—to reflect on the future of our technological society. It contrasts rejections of the city, found in Ellul’s The Meaning of the City (1970) and Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1972), with an affirmation of the technological city found in the Apocalypse of John.
The Digital Divide: A Consideration Of Justice And Pastoral Care In Moral Spaces In Response To Underserved Communities Experiencing Inequity In Technology- The Bible Dictates Our Christian Response, Lael Melville
Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses
The Melville Family Foundation understands that poverty in underserved communities’ fuels economic instability fostering inequality in education. The COVID19 pandemic highlighted poverty as a breeding ground for injustice. The Pandemic drove life as we knew it online, further highlighting inequities in the technology space or the “digital divide”. Christians have a responsibility to the digital divide in a way that facilitates justice while responding with the love of God.
The aim is to explore the digital divide in the consideration of justice and pastoral care in response to underserved communities experiencing inequity in technology.
The researcher of this study will …

The Contemporary Situation Of Elderly People In Ethiopia And The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus, Tsigewengel B. Uddo
Master of Art Theology Thesis
Uddo Tsigewengel B. “The Contemporary Situation of Elderly People in Ethiopia and the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus.” MA Thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2022. 100pp.
The Church is God’s agent to serve God’s people in the church and society at large. The scope of the Church’s ministry comprises all ages: young, adult, and elderly. Culturally, in Ethiopia, children and close family members are responsible for caring for the elderly, therefore, the church has not given satisfactory attention to holistic elderly care. Moreover, current societal change and globalization have negatively affected the indigenous family-support system for the elderly. As a result, many …

Master of Art Theology Thesis
Abuor Joseph O. “The Subtlety of Anger and its Connectedness to Murder: An Exegetical Paper based on Matthew 5:21–26.” M.A Thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2021. 117pp.
The Pharisees and the scribes of Jesus’ time reduced murder to mere physical killing. Jesus, however, denounced this position and outlawed any form of personal anger. Both latent and patent anger are no less than murder in the judgment of God. These include forms of anger which receive societal approval as innocuous and those which are overtly denounced as derogative and destructive. Anger is the prerogative of God. It is his punitive response to human …
