Jean-Baptiste Debret’S Return Of The Negro Hunters, The Brazilian Roça, And The Interstices Of Empire, Amy J. Buono

Art Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"Despite the range of subjects that Debret illustrates, historians of Brazil have usually only reproduced his images of Afro-Brazilian slaves. This is understandable, given the political, social and economic interest in the topic and the fact that Debret is one of the few artists who portrayed the horrors of slavery in Brazil at so early date.3 The keen interest in slavery as an historical topic has also led some scholars to assume that all Afro-Brazilians depicted in Debret's volumes are slaves, when many individuals may in fact have been free.4 While acknowledging the importance of examining Debret's images …

Artists-in-Residence Programme : Exhibition Catalogues

WORDSFORPICTURES intersects with the Lingnan Library site and collection.

The exhibition represents a culmination of a series of discrete interventions that occurred over the residency. The installation operates as a linguistic production offering oblique narratives to explore the notion of the Library as a storehouse of accumulated facts, hypotheses, conjectures and fictions.

"文字圖像" 這項裝置藝術, 結合了嶺南圖書館的埸地和藏書。展覽是藝術家在她駐校期間, 在圖書館內所作的一連串抽象的藝術介入的高潮。這項裝置啟動了語言學上非直截了當的敍述, 來探討圖書館作為存放一個事實, 理論, 推理和小說的寶庫的意圖。

Feathers, Flowers, Talons And Fangs: Power And Serenity In Japanese Nature Prints, Deborah Del Gais, Judith A. Singsen

Journals

Exhibition Notes, Number 26, Winter 2007. Fierce tigers and awe-inspiring dragons—these subjects hardly seem to fit into the same category as delicate songbirds like the nightingale and blossoms as ephemeral as the cherry. Even so, a wide array of flora and fauna and bugs and beasts appears in Japanese prints of the genre traditionally called “birds and flowers” (kachō). These Edo-period prints (1608-1867) reflect the profound Japanese appreciation for the natural world.

Dark Skate, Lia Halloran Jan 2007

Dark Skate, Lia Halloran

Art Faculty Creative Works – Exhibitions

"The ten photographs on view were taken at night in various Los Angeles locations ranging from spaces appropriated by skateboarders, such as the Los Angeles River, to skate parks and backyard ramps.

The works blur the boundaries of photography and become self-portraits and drawings as well as records of performances. Light is used to form the drawing line while HALLORAN skateboards at night through different venues. The resulting images are each a trajectory of the artist’s movements over time. The photographs pair urban environments with lines of light which behave as physical objects or break apart into flurries of abstraction. …

Ilgim Veryeri-Alaca: Recent Prints and Drawings

January 16 to March 25, 2007

Joel and Lila Harnett Museum of Art

Introduction

Most Turkish names have functional meanings. By an auspicious quirk of chance, occasionally by determinism, some names provide an apt characterization of the bearer's talents or personality. So it is with the artist llgim Veryeri-Alaca, whose given name signifies "mirage" and married name denotes "speckled" or "spectral." Her variegated pieces, embracing such norms and techniques as collage, lacework, engraving, ebru (marbled paper), and watercolor, wondrously integrate her Middle Eastern (or specifically Turkish) aesthetics with her mastery of Western craftsmanship.

Although …

Leaded: The Materiality and Metamorphosis of Graphite

August 23 to September 30, 2007

Joel and Lila Harnett Museum of Art

Introduction

In a sense it is highly appropriate that a university museum organize an exhibition about graphite. After all, the pencil is one of the essential tools in foundation drawing classes. In fact the pencil is perhaps the most familiar of all tools to students taking their first steps at making art, as opposed to charcoal or chalk, or the brush loaded with oil or watercolor. To others, the pencil and the graphite it holds symbolize the essence of …

Jerry Bywaters: Lone Star Printmaker, Ellen Buie Niewyk Jan 2007

Jerry Bywaters: Lone Star Printmaker, Ellen Buie Niewyk

eBooks

Jerry Bywaters – Lone Star Printmaker chronicles the printmaking career of Texas regionalist artist Jerry Bywaters (1906 – 1989). In 1935, Bywaters began recording the prints he made, primarily lithographs, when he noted ‘“Gargantua” First litho made (1935)’ on the first page of his print notebook. This study is based on that notebook and places Bywaters’s printmaking career within the context of art developments in Dallas through the 1940s. It includes a catalogue of his prints, information regarding the history of each print, and reproductions of his known illustrations and ephemera.

Bywaters played a major role in establishing the Texas …
