Female students have traditionally dominated enrollment in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) courses (formerly Home Economics). However, gender diversity has recently increased in many FCS areas due to changes in gender stereotypes and career opportunities. This trend is evident at Utah State University, where gender diversity in clothing construction (i.e., sewing) courses has increased drastically since the creation of the Outdoor Product Design and Development degree program. This study evaluated students’ experiences in traditionally female-dominant clothing construction courses.

Hurricane Designed is a project that deals with advertising graphics, their forms and adaptations, and relates them to their environment. Herein is an explanation of the development and procedures of this project as it grew out of an interest in natural history and a pursuit of elegance in design. This creative project deals with the photographic study of forms and patterns found in a natural state. The photographer has covered a wide geographical area including Logan and Cache Valley, Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake, Shoshone Falls in southern Idaho and City of Rocks, also in southern Idaho. The objective of this project was to reveal the visual strength of natural forms, or man-made forms acted upon by natural elements, in black-and-white images. The purpose of this thesis is to explain some of the historical and personal developments in the painting of portraits.

For this project, eleven models were selected all of whom showed a wide range of emotional types and were painted in oil on canvas. The subjects were placed in shallow space, and color was explored as an emotional element. The personal experiences were evaluated and ideas for future development were suggested.
