While the academic concept of queer diasporic studies is relatively new, the epistemic future of this interdisciplinary, intersectional, and inclusive field is already imperiled. Throughout recent years, bills seeking to expunge critical race and queer theory from not only the public education sector, but from the legally-defined “general public” as well, have been proposed by legislators throughout the United States. To combat this assault upon marginalized educators, scholars, and authors, one must first understand what is at stake; the rich site of contemporary, queer diasporic poetry provides one such example. Vol. 1, no. 1 was published in spring 1982 by the University of Maine in Orono and the last volume was published in 2013/2014. University of Maine English professor Carroll Franklin Terrell was the first editor of the journal.

"The Writing Teacher" publication (1983-1986) was sponsored and published by several English departments of the University of Maine. It was supported in part by the National Poetry Foundation, University of Maine, and in part by a grant from Chancellor Patrick McCarthy.

Franco-American Centre Franco-Américain Faculty Scholarship

Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, the most famous French readers of Jack Kerouac, used his works to theorize their key concept of deterritorialization. Québécois readers, on the other hand, pursued the reterritorialization of Kerouac by reframing his writing as embodying the linguistic and cultural tensions experienced by the French Canadian diaspora. While both of these Francophone readings capture important aspects of Kerouac’s oeuvre, this article argues that critics interested in the complexity of Kerouac’s linguistic and cultural identity as a writer would benefit from following Deleuze and Guattari’s rationale to the end, by recognizing the moments of reterritorialization in Kerouac’s …

Dr. Hilda M. Fife was born in Greenland, N.H., in 1903. She received her B.A. degree from Colby College and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University. She also did graduate work at Boston University and the University of Chicago. She became professor of English at the University of Maine from 1946 until retiring as professor emerita in 1969. She founded the Maine Old Cemetery Association and was active in the Kittery Maritime Museum, the Rice Public Library in Kittery, and the Maine League of Historical Societies and Museums. She died in 1990.

This record group contains the papers of William Peirce Randel, a professor of English at the University of Maine, born on January 7, 1909, in New York City. Papers include manuscripts for various books, articles, and talks authored by Randel. Also, includes correspondence, research materials, drafts of articles, and copies of Maine legislative documents concerning higher education. The correspondence, dates primarily from 1962-1992, and included both incoming letters and copies of outgoing letters involving various Maine politicians, especially William S. Cohen. The correspondence concerns current events of the time including higher education, world affairs, and issues of aging.

Unlike many states, Maine has an unusually strong “sense of place,” or cultural regionalism. Wendy Griswold explores where this unusually strong sense comes from, and how it can be further nourished through literature. In doing so, she strengthens the argument for investments in cultural-heritage objects and activities as a means not only of reinforcing an already strong sense of identity among Mainers, but also of promoting Maine as a tourism destination.

Harriet Beecher Stowe's treatment of race in Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) and the colonization scheme with which she ends the novel have long been its most controversial features. Colonization was a term then in use for returning African Americans to Africa as a solution to the race/slavery problem. Stowe concludes Uncle Tom's Cabin by sending most of the surviving black characters—George, Eliza, their children, George's sister Emily, and Eliza's mother, Cassy to Africa where George dreams of founding a Christian republic. In a lengthy letter George explains his colonizationist ambitions: "On the shores of Africa I see a republic." "I …
