Unplanned Public Nature Interiority, Kendra Locklear Ordia Jul 2026

Unplanned Public Nature Interiority, Kendra Locklear Ordia

Interiority

This paper advances a theory of urban interiority through the concept of public nature interiority, integrating ecological thinking into the spatial, sensory, and temporal conditions of exterior spaces that feel interior. Drawing on works by Tine Poot, Richard Sennett, Liz Teston, and Suzie Attiwill, it challenges binary distinctions between interior and exterior, emphasising relational and dynamic urban conditions. Using Attiwill's notions of collective individuation and an ecology of subjectivity, interiority is reframed as being shaped not only by human perception and experience with nature but also by biotic relations and multispecies interactions. The theory is situated within terrain vague—indeterminate, overlooked …

Meanwhile Interiors, Interiority, And Becoming Exterior, Cathy Smith Jul 2026

Meanwhile Interiors, Interiority, And Becoming Exterior, Cathy Smith

Interiority

This paper explores the resonances between stakeholder conceptions of 'meanwhile' or transient urban interiors and the notion of interiority as a mobile construct intertwined with wider social and material forces. The focus is on the positioning of these interiors in relation to broader community and neighbourhood agendas, invoking what Jill Stoner describes as a becoming exterior. Although the so-called 'meanwhile use' of vacant or sub-market-condition buildings is an increasingly common tool for activating and managing underused property assets in global cities, much of the existing discourse focuses on policy and placemaking implications rather than design dimensions. Drawing on interviews with …

Lingering Space: Stillness As Animation In Cinematic Architecture, Caecilia Srikanti Wijayaputri Apr 2026

Lingering Space: Stillness As Animation In Cinematic Architecture, Caecilia Srikanti Wijayaputri

ARSNET

Lingering space appears incompatible with the cinematic. It neither advances nor transforms, resisting narrative progression and formal resolution. This paper, however, argues that the space that lingers constitutes a distinct cinematic condition within architecture. Challenging the assumption that animation depends on movement, the study examines how suspended, non-assembled spatial configurations sustain structural adjacency without consolidating into enclosure. The analysis is based on a practice-led photographic study of a furniture workshop, where wooden components, unfinished frames, tools, and material residues remain in partial states of assembly. Through a series of still images organised as analytical grids, the paper examines how repetition, …

Mapping The Evolution Of Knowledge-Driven Design Framework, Resza Riskiyanto, Arnis Rochma Harani

ARSNET

This study examines the generation of theoretical and practical knowledge in the evolution of design frameworks. Current discourse views design practice as an intuitive process rather than a knowledge-driven one. This study argues that theory as design knowledge informs practice, and knowledge generated from a reflective design practice informs possibilities of theoretical propositions. This article focuses on examining the flows of knowledge that underlines the evolution of pattern-based, force-based, and concept-based design frameworks within the architectural discourses from the year 1400 to 2020. Rather than focusing on the duality of theory and practice in architectural knowledge, the study emphasises the …

Speculating The Architecture Of Nothingness Through Void Operations, Fatiharla Imanisahda, Yandi Andri Yatmo

ARSNET

This speculative design study aims to construct the idea of nothingness as an active and generative element of architecture. Nothingness, understood as voids, empty, and negative spaces, can be reinterpreted as a productive condition that opens up new spatial possibilities. Such a productive condition demonstrates the interdependence between nothingness and the spatial existence of something. The project explores how nothingness constructs the perceptibility of particular spatial terrain through void as architectural design operations. Through creating dystopian contextual scenarios where all spaces have been used up, the study identifies various void forms present in existing structures, classifying these voids based on …
