In the summer of 2004, I served as a recreation planning intern with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), at the Ely Nevada Field Office. I was responsible for the preparation of the "Recreation Project Plan for the Chief Mountain Motorized Trailheads" (Appendix 1), which was a tremendous learning opportunity for me, since I had little experience with planning and designing for motorized use. The project piqued my interest into learning more about motorized recreation on public lands, which in turn led to this thesis on social carrying capacity of motorized users. The profession of landscape architecture has struggled with public perception since the mid-nineteenth century. Community programs, coloring books, and educational toolkits are just some of the methods employed in the profession's attempt to improve public perception. Very little research has been conducted to test the efficiency of these educational attempts. The goal of this thesis is to create a Web-based program to effectively educate young members of the public. The program uses five "mini lessons" to present information about landscape architecture to the student. This study fills a need for documentation of the issues and concerns related to planning recreational trails along irrigation canal rights-of-way through interviews with canal company officials and research of related literature. While this study provides valuable information for recreation planners and cities involved in the planning and development of these canal trails within northern Utah, it also has a universal application that will aid anyone interested in taking on the often complex task of developing a canal trail.

Problem. Few recognize the potential between campus beautification and the enrichment of the institutional programs or the responsibility role of stewardship for school lands. Often, campus beautification has not been considered an important item in capital outlay.

Method. The study utilized the descriptive method. Literature was reviewed to gather concepts related to campus beautification that could be applied to SDA academies and colleges. This report is a local supplement to a wider-focused report on multiple uses of irrigation canals (Kennedy and Unhanand, 1974), primarily concerned with recreational uses. Increasing magnitude and variety of use generated several use conflicts, and the need for a closer look at canal-oriented activities arose. The intent of the study is to show local residents and planning officials the present physical condition of local canals and canal corridors, their present multiple uses, the importance of Cache Valley irrigation canals as recreation systems, and some possible future canal use alternatives.
