Climate Responsive Daylighting Design Strategies Of Co-Owned Shophouse In Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Kungkea Veasna Keo
Climate Responsive Daylighting Design Strategies Of Co-Owned Shophouse In Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Kungkea Veasna Keo
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In the context of Cambodia’s rapid urbanization and climate challenges, the integration of climate-responsive design into residential architecture has become increasingly important. Currently, contemporary housing developments in Cambodia often neglect passive design principles, prioritizing aesthetics over energy efficiency. Many urban homes suffer from poor daylighting and glare conditions and rely heavily on artificial lighting. This thesis, therefore, explores climate-responsive daylighting strategies to improve lighting performance. First, the research surveyed thirteen residential buildings in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap to identify passive design strategies, such as building orientation and natural lighting techniques. A co-owned shophouse in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, was selected …

Bangkok Vernacular Making As A Tool For Fostering Inspiration And Creative Thinking In Design: A Practice-Based Approach, Romrawin Pipatnudda
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This research explores the everyday creativity found on Bangkok’s streets—creative, resourceful, improvised solutions created by ordinary people in response to urban challenges. It is based on the hypothesis that Bangkok’s vernacular making can serve as a tool for fostering inspiration and creative thinking in design. Through photo ethnography, literature review, and a practice-based research methodology, the project investigates two key questions: What are the defining characteristics of Bangkok's vernacular making? And how can it be translated into a tool that inspires creative thinking? 10101-101 Pieces of 1 City (Bangkok Edition) is an outcome of the research, which consists of three …

Challenging Homogenization: Identity In The Design Concepts Of Contemporary High-Rise Architecture In Bangkok, Chalaka Wijenayake
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The dominance of high-rise architecture in globalized urban landscapes has arguably raised concerns about the homogenization of cities and the decline of local identity. As vertical structures become essential components of contemporary metropolises, they pose unique challenges in negotiating cultural and contextual relevance. While often critiqued for their perceived detachment from place, some high-rises attempt to assert localized identities without reverting to superficial mimicry. This research engages with these tensions by analyzing five high-rise buildings in Bangkok—a vibrant, cosmopolitan, and non-Western urban setting—through the lens of Critical Regionalism, despite its known limitations when applied to large-scale architecture. The study examines …

Prosthetic Architecture: Lingering For Nostalgic Futurism, Sahasrungsri Wajchathon
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This thesis explores prosthetic architecture, a concept that combines nostalgia and futurism to reimagine the conservation of architecture in everyday life. Inspired by the idea of architecture as a "prosthesis" that extends and adapts to modern needs, the objective is to propose an alternative approach to architectural conservation — one that not only preserves cultural and historical value but also integrates new infrastructure and functions to align with contemporary lifestyles. By reviewing key theories, such as Sigmund Freud's views in Civilization and its Discontents and Mark Wigley's Prosthetic Theory: The Disciplining of Architecture, this research builds a theoretical foundation for …

From Concrete Jungles To Hemp Sanctuaries: The Rise Of Sustainable Building Practices, Kim Paige Sullivan
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
The evolution of urban landscapes from dense, concrete-dominated environments to greener, more sustainable habitats marks a pivotal shift in architectural and urban planning paradigms. This paper explores the transition from "Concrete Jungles" to "Hemp Sanctuaries," highlighting the significant role of sustainable building practices and the adoption of carbon sequestering materials, with a particular focus on hempcrete. The historical context of rapid urbanization and industrialization in the early 20th century set the stage for the dominance of concrete structures, driven by economics often at the expense of environmental sustainability. This approach contributed to increased demand for resources, energy consumption, and greenhouse …

Giving Up Control: Hybrid Ai-Augmented Workflows For Image-Making, Joshua Vermillion
Tradition Innovations in Arts, Design, and Media Higher Education
This paper argues that if we are to come to creative terms with AI image-making then we must critically interrogate these new tools in the production of creative works. In doing so, designers can start to chart new creative workflows that integrate AI for image-making while augmenting and then evolving our current ways of designing. Workflows are shown that relate to how AI models can augment human creativity in hybrid (human and AI) creative endeavors while taking advantage of the affordances of these technologies.

When mentioning the word hemp, especially in the local language of Madagascar, the literal translation does not set it apart from marijuana, as they are both called “rongony” - creating the stigma around hemp as the negative stereotype of marijuana. However, the material has been used by the ancestors of Madagascar, as well as across cultures, in its fibrous form to produce fabrication like textile goods and packaging. During colonization, the prohibition of hemp intensified, and since then, any activity related to either of these plants is prohibited and will end in severe punitive measures. This thesis explores the strengths …
