In a new program initiated to identify and plot mine locations along the Colorado River, the Lake Mead National Park Service (NPS) requested volunteers from CSSP. Of more than 75 respondents, 45 volunteers met the preliminary qualifications to participate.

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

This investigation examined predictors of residential satisfaction among newly arrived residents (NAR) and long-term residents (LTR) of a rural community following a rapid influx of immigrants into the community. The physical environment, social/cultural aspects of life, and resources and public services were hypothesized to affect perceptions of residential satisfaction. Both LTR and NAR were pleased with environmental attributes, sociocultural attributes, and public services. An inverse relationship was revealed between stress and residential satisfaction. The Clark County stewardship database is the only one of its kind among all Nevada counties. Funding for this database from Clark County is vital to maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of Clark County cultural resources.

Two programmers were hired to design and implement a relational database for the CSSP. During this quarter, a system was designed in ACCESS and has accomplished the following:

• Store personnel information and required documentation on volunteer site stewards. Names of all 3 52 stewards were inputted and fully populate the database. Ethics Statements and Volunteer Agreements unique to each steward are recorded.

This research project investigated the community’s current level of heritage awareness in County Wicklow. The study was initiated by Wicklow County Council and the Heritage Council in response to objective 1, action 1.2 of the County Wicklow heritage plan 2004-2008, which pointed to the need to undertake a study to determine public attitudes towards heritage and to gauge the current level of awareness about heritage in the county. University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

The mammalogy program at Texas Tech University officially was established in 1962, when Robert L. Packard joined the faculty of the Department of Biological Sciences. As the institution's first mammalogist, Packard took the initiative to develop a strong program of mammalian research and education. Influenced by the successful program built by his mentor, E. Raymond Hall, at the University of Kansas, Packard modeled similar goals for Texas Tech University. Those goals included a strong emphasis on both undergraduate and graduate education and research, with several mammalogy faculty members, and the establishment and growth of a large and active mammal collection.

A list of cultural sites unique to each of the four agencies is in the process of being compiled by the project manager. The first round, currently numbering more than 300 sites, is being defined in general categories by location and urgency for attention. Additions, refinements, and corrections will be ongoing.

Trainers for Nevada Heritage Site Stewardship were questioned in order to begin tailoring operating procedures for CSSP recruitment and training.

Cultural Site Stewardship Program

Although the task agreement formally commenced June 30, 2004, the agreement was not fully executed by both parties until July 22, 2004. Since that date, UNLV met with the Interagency Cultural Resources Team on July 23, 2004. Bobbie Antonich, Government Technical Representative for the National Park Service, and Nancy Flagg, Director of the UNLV Public Lands Initiative, brought the team up-to-date on the status of the task agreement, UNLV’s role in fulfilling the agreement.

Legislation

Current development patterns and increased tax pressures in local municipalities combine to harm both Maine’s natural resources and its quality of life. Previous initiatives such as the implementation of zoning laws did not fully result in the desired outcomes. Zoning laws were often too flexible and often did not resist market and political pressures to change zoning regulations to allow development with possible economic growth. A sound taxation system or fee structure may be the solution to slow down development in natural areas and direct it towards areas appropriate for growth.
