Included in this paper are the results of two surveys that were designed to assess student interest in Construction Management students’ participation in the annual Design Village Competition hosted by Cal Poly every spring. Sixty-five Architecture and Architectural Engineering, and thirty Construction Management undergraduate students completed these surveys at the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED), Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The overall student interest level in both groups was majority positive. To delve deeper into potential benefits and obstacles on this subject, along with quantitative data from the surveys, there is also qualitative data from faculty member interviews, …

Isolated by the Tibetan highlands which frame Yunnan’s northwest fringes, the ethnic minorities who call the region home live in rural settings ranging from rice-terraced fields to tropical forests; lifestyle unchanged for hundreds of years. However, with globalization causing an exposure to western standards of living, in conjunction with the country’s predisposition towards all things foreign, the people of Yunnan have begun forgoing generations of vernacular architecture in favor of modern materials and regionally defunct construction methods. Manhattan’s real estate market since the turn of the 20th century to present day can be characterized as an extreme optimization of the economical elements of architecture. Most of the buildings in Manhattan’s diverse and complex skyline share a tenacious desire to maximize the profitability and feasibility of a site while minimizing overall building expenditure. Re-chartered at the University of Kentucky in 2005, the Triangle Fraternity – a brotherhood of students studying Architecture, Engineering, and Sciences – now seeks to establish a visible presence by building a new fraternity house on-campus. Traditionally, schools of architecture are not great laboratories to explore the collaborative processes and teamwork that are essential to integrated design and delivery practices as exemplified by Lean Construction. The pre-eminence of the “hero-architect” in the design studio is in direct conflict with methods that can reduce risk and improve the efficiency of the design and construction delivery process. Risk? The new shelter should incorporate improved natural lighting and ventilation, adequate space for laundry facilities and more space for the animals' living and bathing needs.
