Work-Life Coexistence In The Age Of Gen Z: A Comprehensive Examination Of Expectations And Industry Realities, Ameenullah Amiri
All Theses
The construction industry in the United States is currently facing significant workforce shortages. This issue is compounded by several challenges, including the slower hiring pace of younger generations compared to the retirement of baby boomers. Generation Z (Gen Z) has shown less interest in joining the construction industry, exacerbating the problem. A systematic literature review was conducted toa identify overlaps and gaps between the current construction industry workforce's perceptions of the industry and preferences of Gen Z. Based on the literature review, work-life balance or “Work-life Coexistence (WLC)" was identified as the most preferred factor for Gen Z. The traditional …

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
In the past decade, the term ‘global aging’ has gained much attention among researchers, policymakers, civil societies, and governments worldwide. The continuous decline in fertility rates and increased life expectancy have resulted in an ongoing demographic transition where the share of adults aged 65 or older is increasing and outnumbering children younger than five years. In the United States and other developed countries, this rapid demographic transition is expected to continue to strain the existing health infrastructure as it becomes increasingly challenging to ensure healthy living environments for older adults. The ten questions and answers in this paper have been …

Sustainable Seismic Architecture: Exploring The Synergy Of Mortise-And-Tenon Joinery And Modern Timber Construction For Reducing Embodied Carbon, Cong Li
Masters Theses
Abstract
This design thesis explores the potential of combining ancient Mortise-and-Tenon joinery techniques with modern timber construction to create sustainable seismic architecture that simultaneously reduces embodied carbon. By studying the enduring qualities of Mortise-and-Tenon structures and their ability to withstand earthquakes, this research uncovers a synergistic relationship between traditional joinery methods and contemporary building materials, unlocking significant opportunities for embodied carbon reduction ranging from 7 to 40% compared to other modern architecture construction.
The research reveals that Mortise-and-Tenon structures commonly incorporate large roof systems, acting as mass dampers that provide flexibility and distribute weight evenly to columns. By transferring the …
