The Lack Of Fire Safety Knowledge And Implementation The Case Of High-Rise Buildings, Mohamad Abou Chakra Oct 2020

The Lack Of Fire Safety Knowledge And Implementation The Case Of High-Rise Buildings, Mohamad Abou Chakra

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

High-rise buildings are growing rapidly in number around the world. They are becoming important landmarks that mark out certain geographical areas. The fires of high-rise building have many characters not found in traditional low-rise buildings, like the variety of blazing factors, ways of fire spreading, and difficulty of evacuation. Hence, the protection features of conventional fire methods are not sufficient in designing towers. The paper, at first, summarizes the characteristics of high-rise buildings and fires, the unique features of Tall Buildings and the special life safety requirements for the high-rise buildings. Consequently, the topic of fire and life safety codes …

Adaptive Airport Architecture, Yash Mehta Jul 2020

Adaptive Airport Architecture, Yash Mehta

Masters Theses

The architecture of Airport terminals is unique in nature as it is linked with a wide range of concerns that go hand in hand to demonstrate the efficient functioning of the building. From an inconvenient mode of travel to the city center to the congestions in the security screening, concerns varying from urban design to systems engineering have an impact on the user experience. Along with these concerns, the spatial organization of the airport terminals accommodates various commercial, leisure, retail, and service-based spaces in addition to the core function of aviation. Where the guiding parameters for determining the spatial requirements …

"Knotted Tubes" High Rise Residential Tower, Roman Lara Iv Jun 2020

"Knotted Tubes" High Rise Residential Tower, Roman Lara Iv

Architectural Engineering

Knotted Tubes is an 800' residential tower designed by a team of two third year architecture students and one graduate architectural engineering student in the two-quarter high-rise design studio partnered with Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill LLP. The report documents it's design origins and narrative evolution throughout the studio's duration, as well as the design process and final iteration of the whole system, focusing on the structural system and tectonic integration.

Lilypaaaad - Structural Design, Katelyn Smith Jun 2020

Lilypaaaad - Structural Design, Katelyn Smith

Architectural Engineering

This report tells the story of the structural design process of the LilyPAAAAD tower. The highlights of this process include precedent studies, 2-D structural analysis studies, hand calculations, and drawings. Precedent studies gave insight into unknown possibilities and helped discover how other engineers achieved their design goals. Projects like Sendai Mediatheque and the HSBC Tower are innovative solutions to unique design criteria. 2-D structural studies revealed how the braced frame and outrigger systems worked. By changing member stiffness and studying the load path, the members that contributed the most to resisting the load could be identified. Hand calculations were essential …

A Framework For Implementing Integrated Project Delivery In Architecture Design Firms In Egypt, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman, Lamis Yasser Wagih Youssef Jan 2020

A Framework For Implementing Integrated Project Delivery In Architecture Design Firms In Egypt, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman, Lamis Yasser Wagih Youssef

Architectural Engineering

Purpose

This paper aims to develop a framework for implementing the integrated project delivery (IPD) approach during the design process in architecture design firms (ADFs) in Egypt.

Design/methodology/approach

A research methodology consists of literature review, case studies and survey questionnaire was designed to achieve the abovementioned aim. First, literature review was used to identify and categorise the challenges of implementing IPD during the design process. Second, four case studies were analysed to investigate the values delivered to the client or missed due to the use of IPD or traditional procurement approaches, respectively. Finally, a survey questionnaire was carried out with …
