Small Modular Reactors And Advanced Reactor Security: Regulatory Perspectives On Integrating Physical And Cyber Security By Design To Protect Against Malicious Acts And Evolving Threats, Raphael Duguay Dec 2020

Small Modular Reactors And Advanced Reactor Security: Regulatory Perspectives On Integrating Physical And Cyber Security By Design To Protect Against Malicious Acts And Evolving Threats, Raphael Duguay

International Journal of Nuclear Security

How can future nuclear technologies and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) deter and prevent organized crime groups, terrorists, and malicious actors from attempting to steal or sabotage nuclear materials and facilities? This paper presents the benefits of integrating Security by Design (SeBD) into a regulatory framework to allow more a flexible and effective design of physical protection systems for SMRs. During its effort to modernize the Nuclear Security Regulations, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) licensing application process provides for the option of SeBD in moving toward a performance-based approach with less prescriptive requirements. CNSC also recognizes the need for a …

Establishing An Information System For Documenting Valuable Buildings By Using Gis In Egypt, Mona Mahrous Abdel Wahed Feb 2020

Establishing An Information System For Documenting Valuable Buildings By Using Gis In Egypt, Mona Mahrous Abdel Wahed

Emirates Journal for Engineering Research

Valuable heritage buildings are the history of nations, and history forms the identities of these nations. Many of these buildings are exposed to deterioration, destruction and distortion. Therefore, it is essential to protect and maintain these buildings to protect history. Effective documentation of valuable buildings is necessary to guide and assist stakeholders in making decisions regarding valuable buildings. Documentation requires robust and scientific methods. Therefore, it is important to utilize new technology in general and geographic information system GIS in particular in documenting valuable buildings. GIS has the potential to contribute and deal with valuable buildings at various stages and …

Achieving Sustainability Through Reducing Construction Waste During The Design Process: A Value Management Perspective, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman, Sherouk Mohamed Abdelrahim

Architectural Engineering

Purpose:

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of Value Management towards achieving sustainability through reducing the construction waste during the design process.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the abovementioned aim, a research methodology consisting literature review and survey questionnaire is designed to achieve the following objectives: first, building a comprehensive understanding of the research topic through reviewing literature related to the nature of the construction industry, waste in construction, sustainability, the design phase and Value Management; second, presenting and analysing two case studies to validate the role of Value Management towards reducing waste in construction projects; third, conducting …

Divergent Heritage Sustainability: A Threefold Approach Through Lean Talent Management, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman, Mohamed Hesham Khalil Jan 2020

Divergent Heritage Sustainability: A Threefold Approach Through Lean Talent Management, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman, Mohamed Hesham Khalil

Architectural Engineering

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the role of lean talent management (LTM) as a novel approach for optimising creativity in architectural design firms (ADFs) towards achieving divergent heritage sustainability (DHS).

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the abovementioned aim, a mixed qualitative and quantitative methodology is designed to accomplish three objectives. First, investigating the relationship between heritage and urban development; types of heritage and the role of LTM in enhancing creativity in ADFs. Second, presenting and analysing six heritage-related case studies to assess the need for creative solutions based on extent of deterioration in three different places in Egypt. Third, outlining the …

A Lean Talent Management Framework For Maximizing Creativity In Architectural Design Firms, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman, Mohamed Hesham Khalil Jan 2020

A Lean Talent Management Framework For Maximizing Creativity In Architectural Design Firms, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman, Mohamed Hesham Khalil

Architectural Engineering

Being one of the creative industries worldwide, Architecture plays a significant role towards developing communities, fulfilling their needs and meeting their expectations. The divergence of societal problems and the complexity nature of projects called for creative and non-traditional solutions to address these problems and overcome complexities. Architectural Design Firms (ADFs) are responsible for achieving this mission, yet lack of motivation and demotivation acted as barriers for creativity. Recently, Talent Management (TM) was presented as an innovative approach for fostering creativity, balancing work-life commitments, enhancing motivation and reducing demotivation. However, lack of utilizing talented human capitals, which was counted as waste …

Applying Lca-Bim Integration For A Sustainable Management Process, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman, Dalia Morsi Ahmed Morsi, Walaa S E Ismaeel, Ahmed Ehab Abd El Hamed

Architectural Engineering

This work investigates the benefits of performing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) using Building Information Modelling (BIM) techniques on a case study management process. This provides insights for reducing the environmental impacts of building materials and elements along the life cycle of a concrete residential project in Egypt. The study follows the LCA ISO 14040 and 14044 guidelines, local materials database, Revit modelling and One-Click LCA plugin. The result outlines that most of the environmental impacts occur during the operation and manufacturing phase. It also shows that slabs and beams result in most of the environmental loads. In terms of the …

Design Out Waste As An Approach For Achieving Sustainability In Egyptian Housing Projects, Laila Elsawaf, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman Jan 2020

Design Out Waste As An Approach For Achieving Sustainability In Egyptian Housing Projects, Laila Elsawaf, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman

Architectural Engineering

Housing projects have been increasing rapidly during the previous years to fulfil community needs and achieve the national and international sustainable development objectives. Due to their nature, housing projects generate a significant amount of waste that accounts for approximately 40% of the solid waste that the construction industry generates annually. Many of these wastes are a result of inappropriate decisions adopted during the design process such as using non-sustainable materials and inefficient use of natural recourses. Meanwhile, research has revealed that achieving sustainability within housing projects is a crucial challenge, yet an essential one. This called to think differently and …

Flexible Design: An Innovative Approach For Achieving Sustainability In Primary Public Schools In Egypt, Yara Fahmy, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman Jan 2020

Flexible Design: An Innovative Approach For Achieving Sustainability In Primary Public Schools In Egypt, Yara Fahmy, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman

Architectural Engineering

Public schools in Egypt are considered a valuable asset that should be preserved and sustained, as they play a paramount role for the development of a sustainable community. Whereas, currently, the schools in Egypt are not sustainable from social, economic and environmental perspective as they are generally heavy, fixed and normally irreversible once construction has been completed. This is due to the traditional construction method used in the construction of schools which consumes time and generates a vast amount of waste. In addition, the changing demands of the occupants may confront the need for future expansion or complete changeover. With …
