Strabismal Existence, Jordan Dubreuil Jan 2009

Strabismal Existence, Jordan Dubreuil

Architecture Theses and Projects

This thesis experiments with small prefabricated living spaces to examine the notion of existence. How small can a space become before an individual must expand and how to channel that expansion through architecture using several types of structures. The first is a Self Sustaining Mobile Living Unit that provides freedom and enriches the basic needs for existence. The second is a Demountable Structure where people are provided tools for expanding themselves creatively. The third is an existing mill structure within a local artist community in Fall River, Massachusetts.

Vertical Communities: An Alternative To Suburban Sprawl, Zev O’Brien-Gould Jan 2009

Vertical Communities: An Alternative To Suburban Sprawl, Zev O’Brien-Gould

Architecture Theses and Projects

In an age where space has become limited, resources are becoming both scarce and expensive, and populations grow with steadying pace, our definition of need must change. What we expect and understand to be normal will eventually change and evolve into something different. We must shape how we live in advance of such a change. We must accept a better way of life. We must produce a better way of life. The answer shall come from a higher density of living, where we will not have to give up privileges, but redefine them. It will have to be an exploration …

The partnership assists communities with planning and design for downtown revitalization. In the spring of 2009, DPAC had the pleasure of working with the Deming Main Street organization. The following design interventions envision ways in which Deming Main Street program can utilize its existing assets--its historic building stock, diverse communities, location, and climate--to develop a vital downtown for locals and visitors. They are the outcome of twelve weeks of work by a team of twenty planning, architecture, …

Mil_Civ Immersive Surface, Elizabeth M. Quick

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The pervasive proliferation of complex tracking systems such as GPS and simulation gaming environments such as Full Spectrum Warrior are transforming the built environment into an immersive 1:1 map where all flows and transactions are measured, monitored, and tracked. The gap between map and real experience disappears resulting in an immersive map. The spatial implications of this real time 1:1 immersive map creates an opportunity for architecture itself to monitor, track, and measure flows and transactions. This tracking and simulation agenda plays out specifically in the design of a surface that integrates military training, military artifacts, and civilian recreation into …

Metrology And Proportion In The Ecclesiastical Architecture Of Medieval Ireland, Avril Behan, Rachel Moss Jun 2008

Metrology And Proportion In The Ecclesiastical Architecture Of Medieval Ireland, Avril Behan, Rachel Moss

Conference Papers

The aim of this paper is to examine the extent to which detailed empirical analysis of the metrology and proportional systems used in the design of Irish ecclesiastical architecture can be analysed to provide historical information not otherwise available. Focussing on a relatively limited sample of window tracery designs as a case study, it will first set out to establish what, if any, systems were in use, and then what light these might shed on the background, training and work practices of the masons, and, by association, the patrons responsible for employing them.
