The Density Dilemma: Reconciling Energy Efficiency And Social Well-Being In Compact Housing, Adeb Ebrahim
The Density Dilemma: Reconciling Energy Efficiency And Social Well-Being In Compact Housing, Adeb Ebrahim
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
This study examines compact housing not only in terms of urban design. From a sequential exploratory mixed-methods approach study on 120 residential units in Sana’a, we observed that there is a paradox where energy modular housing consumes 28% less energy, but social isolation increases 22%. However, this paradox is countered by the design of biophilic shared spaces (β = -0.34). This research establishes a case for more equitably accessible policies on density and proposes that high-density urban fabrics must have a “social connector” code. This study integrates Fainstein's (2020) concept of the 'just city' and contemporary housing innovations into the …

Machine Learning In Architecture: A Bibliometric Analysis Approach Of Trends, Influential Authorship, And Research Gaps From 2020 To 2024, Emokpae Erebor, Damilola Adesina, Benjamin Moral, Modi Zango
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
This paper presents the findings of the bibliometric analysis investigating how the current research landscape of machine learning in the discipline of architecture has evolved between 2020 and 2024. This study employs a bibliometric methodology, drawing insights from peer-reviewed journal articles from 2020 to 2024, which were sourced from databases such as Web of Science, Scopus and Science Direct. Keywords were refined using Boolean operators to identify dominant trends, key application areas and ongoing research gaps. The goal of this paper is to provide a structured knowledge base that can guide future research by highlighting emerging directions. This study serves …
The Reconstruction Of Beirut City Centre (Downtown) As A New Urbanism Project, Ahmed S. Attia
The Reconstruction Of Beirut City Centre (Downtown) As A New Urbanism Project, Ahmed S. Attia
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
The study aims to highlight and examine the Beirut City Centre reconstruction project as an example of the concept of New Urbanism. The study covers Lebanon's geographical location, traditional house architecture, Beirut's history, urban growth, and the civil war and its effects on the city's architecture and identity. Moreover, the objectives of the reconstruction project as a New Urbanism Project were applied in the city's center and the adjacent area of the Saifi Village. The conclusion summarizes the lessons learned from applying the New Urbanism Concept to the reconstruction project.

An Assessment Of Biophilic Design Strategies Application In Selected Hostels In A Typical Tertiary Institution, Nigeria., Emokpae Erebor, Foluke Jegede, Pontip Nimlyat, Benjamin Moral
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Designing spaces that incorporate the principles of biophilic design enhances the buildings occupants closeness to nature while also enhancing spaces connectivity and place conditions. It has environmental, health and other important benefits not only for the environment but also for the human beings that domicile around them. Firstly, this study was carried out using quantitative data obtained from 120 female students of two selected hostel facilities in a typical private University in South-West Nigeria. Secondly, observation is in identifying the actual applications where these strategies have been applied within these hostels through photographic images. This was done by identifying different …

Analysis Of Local Economic Development In The Urban Informal Settlement Upgrading Programs, George K. Nyamu, Luke M. Obala, Owiti A. K'Akumu
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
This study examines the role of local economic development (LED) within informal settlement upgrading, using Kibera in Nairobi, Kenya, as a focal case. As one of the most densely populated informal settlements in sub-Saharan Africa, Kibera has been the target of multiple upgrading initiatives intended to improve housing, infrastructure, and living standards. However, the integration of economic development goals into these interventions has often been overlooked or insufficiently conceptualized. Employing a mixed-methods research design—comprising household surveys, key informant interviews with government and NGO actors, and field-based observations—this study investigated the extent to which upgrading programs have influenced local enterprises, economic …
Italian Architectural Heritage In Libya's Old Town Of Al-Marj, Ali Eltraposli
Italian Architectural Heritage In Libya's Old Town Of Al-Marj, Ali Eltraposli
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
In the urban heritage, preserving the urban heritage is a priority for countries, as the past constitutes a rich legacy that is an extension of the present in terms of urban form and cultural diversity in people's lives. In addition, it represents an extension of history that helps in understanding the lifestyle in a chronological sequence. Accordingly, the role of international and local organisations came in issuing the necessary legislation to work on maintaining and reviving these cities in a way that preserves the continuity of living in them according to sustainable standards that spread awareness of responsibility and enhance …
Does What Happens In Vegas Increase Pedestrian Safety? A Longitudinal Study On The Effectiveness Of Pedestrian Bridges, Jalen Paulos, Joaquin Miguel Del Mundo, Brock Wentz, Janel Pietryga
Does What Happens In Vegas Increase Pedestrian Safety? A Longitudinal Study On The Effectiveness Of Pedestrian Bridges, Jalen Paulos, Joaquin Miguel Del Mundo, Brock Wentz, Janel Pietryga
Department of Orthopaedics Faculty Research
Urban populations continue to rise and the frequency that pedestrians are exposed to vehicular traffic continues to increase. The result is an increase in automobile versus pedestrian collisions. This study aims to determine the efficacy of pedestrian bridges in reducing the rates of automobile‒pedestrian collisions. Data for all automobile versus pedestrian collisions and injuries from July 1997 through December 2023 at four distinct intersections along Las Vegas Boulevard were retrieved from the Nevada Department of Transportation. These sites were chosen because of their historically high rates of automobile versus pedestrian incidents and the construction of pedestrian bridges at three of …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study investigates the potential of indirect carbonation for CO2 sequestration and high-purity CaCO3 production using fluidized bed combustion (FBC) fly ash (FFA) and bottom ash (FBA). XRF and XRD analyses revealed high reactive CaO contents derived from lime, portlandite, and anhydrite. Calcium extraction using 1- mol NH4Cl achieved markedly higher efficiency than deionized (DI) water, yielding up to 17,586 mg/L of Ca²⁺ and producing 10.2 wt.% and 8.4 wt.% CaCO3 from FFA and FBA, respectively, with CO2 capture capacities of 45.0 and 36.8 kg per ton of ash. The precipitated CaCO3 exhibited …
