The Role Of Nonprofits In Ced, Dana A. Thompson Jan 2009

The Role Of Nonprofits In Ced, Dana A. Thompson

Book Chapters

Nonprofit institutions play an integral role in community economic development (CED) in the United States. These entities initiate and implement most CED activities, and the CED movement would be significantly weakened without their existence. This chapter briefly explores the historical context of various nonprofit organizations in assisting low- and moderate-income communities across the United States, the ways in which modern-day nonprofit organizations are effecting change in their communities, and the challenges to their effectiveness.

The first section of this chapter discusses community development corporations (CDCs), neighborhood-based organizations that are the primary instruments used to drive and implement revitalization in low- …

The Inclusive I.C.E. Cube :New Dimensions And Approaches For Design Inclusion, Praima Israsena Na Ayudhya

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Inclusive design is an evolving and complex concept, the definition of which can be extended to address not only age and disability, but also race, income, education, andculture. As most of products are originally designed in developed countries, conventional elder-care products present serious difficulties and exclude users with different cultural customs and lower economic status. There is an urgent need for design methods, based on an expansive understanding of not only age and disability, but also income, education and culturally related factors, which will lead to a minimizing of the impact of these differences and thereby extend the effectiveness of …

From The School-Lands To Kerry Hill: Two Centuries Of Urban Development At The Northern End Of Newport, R.I., James C. Garman

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

Known over time as the "School Lands" (ca. 1763-1800), "New Town" (ca. 1800-1850), and Kerry Hill (1850-present), the Kingston Avenue study era presents one of the earliest enclaves of free African Americans in Newport. Building on the work of the RIHP(1977) and Richard Youngken(1994), this essay seeks to identify and place into context surviving buildings and landscapes related to African-American experiences in the post-Revolutionary War, Antebellum and the Guilded Age periods. It represents the first systematic study of the establishment, settlement, and survival of this neighborhood, set on a windswept hillside on the northerly edge of the colonial city, and …

Denken System In Japan: Important District For Preservation Of A Group Of Traditional Buildings, Terdsak Tachakitkachorn

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

In term of architectural and town conservation, Japan unlike other developed nation has developed its own specific system. "Denken system" or "Preserved district system" is directly translated as "Important District for Preservation of a Group of Traditional Buildings". In this respect law was first enacted by the Agency for cultural affair in 1975, with an aim to conserve groups of traditional buildings and not only any specific single buildings. From then until 2010, 86 areas in the whole country have been announced as the "preserved districts". The process for designation of a preserved district starts with a fundamental study, a …

Teaching The Design: Timber Shear Walls And Developing Student Engineering Judgement And Intuition Through A Hands-On Experience, Craig Baltimore, James Mwangi, Brent Nuttall Jan 2009

Teaching The Design: Timber Shear Walls And Developing Student Engineering Judgement And Intuition Through A Hands-On Experience, Craig Baltimore, James Mwangi, Brent Nuttall

Architectural Engineering

Engineering judgement and intuition are vital characteristic of the design profession. Engineering judgement and intuition are developed through experience. This experience is gained by designing a building (working with industry disciplines and the owner); analyzing the building (calculations); being part of the construction process (constructability), and walking through the final product (end user). Teaching design means, in part, developing engineering judgement and intuition. This may best be accomplished by incorporating active learning experiences.

For timber and masonry buildings, the shear wall is the lateral resisting system of choice. A hands-on experience has been developed as a simple exercise in constructing …

Identity Factory: The Mass Production Of The Masses, Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Peter W. Bartash

Architecture Theses and Projects

Greenpoint, Brooklyn, is a location whose identity is its layered manufacturing history. Within the infrastructural system of corridors that organizes its urban fabric exists a tectonic language of an architecture whose purpose is in providing opportunities for making. Operating within one of these corridors, the Identity Factory allows that an individual become aware of activity shaping his or her own identity, the relationship of that identity to a greater context, and the potential to define oneself engaged in a cultural landscape through the process of manufacturing

Learning Through Nature: Mount Holyoke Environmental Research And Education Center, Sari M. Lipnick

Architecture Theses and Projects

I plan on doing this by creating an area located along a river or body of water that people will be able to interact and learn from its ecosystem and wildlife. I would like this to be a space that allows for the public to come and learn either indoors or outdoors with a variety of tools. By creating two defined areas functioning as elementary learning and university learning it would allow the variety of participants to come into the space and even interact with each other. One goal of mine would be to explore this interaction and control it, …

Strabismal Existence, Jordan Dubreuil Jan 2009

Strabismal Existence, Jordan Dubreuil

Architecture Theses and Projects

This thesis experiments with small prefabricated living spaces to examine the notion of existence. How small can a space become before an individual must expand and how to channel that expansion through architecture using several types of structures. The first is a Self Sustaining Mobile Living Unit that provides freedom and enriches the basic needs for existence. The second is a Demountable Structure where people are provided tools for expanding themselves creatively. The third is an existing mill structure within a local artist community in Fall River, Massachusetts.
