This dissertation looks at the environmental benefits of 3 key areas in relation to interior design: Energy, Water and Air; energy efficient lighting, water efficient plumbing fixtures and the effects of interior materials and finishes on indoor air quality.

Qualitative research methodology: Extensive literature review of texts available on these topics, and also of the relevant building codes and environmental legislation applicable to Irish interior designers and the built environment.

Quantitative research methodology: A comprehensive survey of then currently practicing Irish interior designers, and their use of sustainable design strategies (or lack thereof). The survey was conducted in conjunction with …

Many public transit agencies consider increasing fares when faced with budget shortfalls. This paper analyzes the Alameda–Contra Costa (AC) Transit District's five alternative fare proposals introduced for public discussion in March 2005. The proposals combined fare hikes, base fare reductions, eliminations of free transfers, and discontinuation of periodic passes. Using the agency's 2002 on-board survey data, the study assessed the impacts of individual fare proposals on different subsets of riders and evaluated if they were equitable; and estimated potential fare revenues, using alternative price elasticities to estimate changes in ridership due to changes in price. The costs of obtaining and maintaining ISO certification are high. Moreover, studies have shown mixed results on the benefits of the certification. Consequently, the objective of this research was to verify whether or not companies do value maintaining the ISO 9000 certification.

The empirical study was conducted on 41 U.S. companies that were first certified in 2000. The companies formed an existing database as they were used by Dr. Arbuckle in 2004 in his doctoral dissertation. Of the 41 companies, 12 were found to be out of business, leaving a final sample size of 29. Data were gathered from this …

Through this Professional Project, the author examines circulation and suitability pertaining to bicycle planning on a college campus, in the real-world setting of the University of Georgia (UGA) main campus located in Athens, Georgia.

Based on existing on-campus activity, bicycle circulation is established. Using an analytical tool, namely the bicycle level of service (BLOS) analysis, roadway segments within the study area are evaluated for suitability with respect to adjacent motor vehicle traffic. Several improvements are suggested throughout the project to enhance the existing BLOS, and in turn enhance the bicycling conditions. Most of the suggestions are based on traditional improvements, …

On July 16, 2009, the School of Urban and Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Arlington hosted a daylong roundtable on how “climate leader” municipalities of North Central Texas—and urban planners in those communities—are responding to the looming challenge of climate change. The organizers invited the planning directors in selected North Central Texas communities to send staff members to participate. The targeted municipalities were those who are members of Cities for Climate Protection (ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability) or whose mayors have signed the Climate Protection Agreement (U.S. Conference of Mayors). The present study focuses on understanding the transport and fate of dissolved waste from aquaculture pens in near-coastal environments using the hydrodynamic code SUNTANS, which employs unstructured grids to compute flows at very high resolution. We perform simulations of the dissolved waste field and study the effects of different flow conditions (tides and currents) on the evolution of the waste plume. The fish pen causes partial blockage of the flow, leading to the deceleration of the approaching flow and the formation of a downstream wake. Marginal Lands And Suburban Nature: Open Space Planning And The Case Of The 1893 Boston Metropolitan Parks Plan, Steven Thomas Moga

Soon after publication, the 1893 Boston Metropolitan Parks Report came to be regarded as a model plan for American cities. Little known to the public today, it is frequently cited by landscape and planning historians as a testament to the vision of “pioneer” landscape architect Charles Eliot and metropolitan planning advocate Sylvester Baxter. However, planning historians have overlooked key aspects of the plan and omitted significant details about the authors’ redevelopment and planning goals. I argue that Eliot and Baxter viewed open space planning as a means of combating slums and establishing a regionwide land use template for future growth.

When making application for a Carnegie Library grant, proponents added letters of support. These letters often described their communities in great detail, providing information about the city's population, the area' cultural and educational institutions, and the dynamics of local government. Writers took this work quite seriously, and some eloquently requested that the "King of Steel" provide funding for a library in their community. This article presents information about the letter writing campaign from Middlesboro, Kentucky, a small town in the southeastern portion of the Commonwealth. It is important to understand the different types of house museums and their purposes before we offer information about our own house museum.

There are three basic types of house museums: Documentary, Representative, Decorative. Each type has its purpose and distinct interpretive thrust.

Having very little information about the Felts family, it is impossible to present our museum as the documentary Felts House. A much more realistic interpretive goal is as a representative 1815 Log House.
