Breaking The Mould 1 : A Study Of Condensation In Single-Leaf Concrete Wall Upgrades, Joseph Little

Articles

This article is the first of a series looking at upgrade options and issues associated with single-leaf walls of existing houses. This article will focus on insulated drylined concrete block walls of the ubiquitous housing estate house. This will include the findings of software that dynamically models moisture movement through the wall over several years. The article following this will look at a range of options for replacing existing drylining or installing drylining where it never was before, be that for a solid block wall of a 1950s house or a solid brick wall of an 1850s house.

Crib Dock Permit And Construction Standards In The Upper Great Lakes, Brian J. Hoxie Jan 2009

Crib Dock Permit And Construction Standards In The Upper Great Lakes, Brian J. Hoxie

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study explored the permitting, design, and construction of crib docks in the Les Cheneaux and Drummond Island region of Michigan. It employed an exploratory two-phase mixed-methods research design: first to qualitatively explore and define the problem, and then to quantitatively evaluate a convenience sample of crib docks to determine appropriate permit and construction norms that meet functional requirements while addressing ecological and waterway concerns. The variables considered included siting, design, superstructure, and ground anchorage.

The qualitative findings demonstrated that the USACE and MDEQ are the approving agencies for crib docks and oppose new crib dock construction permits, because they …

The Management Of Built Heritage: A Comparative Review Of Policies And Practice In Western Europe, North America And Australia, Tracy Pickerill, Lynne Armitage Jan 2009

The Management Of Built Heritage: A Comparative Review Of Policies And Practice In Western Europe, North America And Australia, Tracy Pickerill, Lynne Armitage

Conference papers

Building on Pickerill’s (2002 & 2007) work in North America and Western Europe, this paper compares funding mechanisms, stakeholder involvement and area based heritage conservation models from Western Europe and North America with those of Australia. More specifically, the domain of enquiry considers Pickerill’s bifurcated model of the new governance of financing for conservation which recognizes the duality of tool knowledge and design knowledge. Examples from practice in Europe, America and Australia provide an illustration of these mechanisms.

Transforming High-Speed Rail Stations To Major Activity Hubs: Lessons For California, Cornelius Nuworsoo, Elizabeth Deakin Jan 2009

Transforming High-Speed Rail Stations To Major Activity Hubs: Lessons For California, Cornelius Nuworsoo, Elizabeth Deakin

City and Regional Planning

This paper presents findings from domestic and international case studies of developments around high-speed rail stations and derives from these findings some lessons for station area development for California’s high-speed rail system. The paper reviews the case for high-speed rail as a complement to air and highway systems in addressing congestion and providing needed additional services as the population of the State continues to grow. Review of domestic and international experiences reveals that well-planned station-area developments can result in desirable impacts on the communities served including: a) good intermodal connections – convenient access and ease of transferring between local and …

City and Regional Planning

This study evaluates the benefits and costs of smart transit technologies at San Luis Obispo Transit, a small transit operation. In 2001, the California Department of Transportation test-deployed its new program entitled “Efficient Deployment of Advanced Public Transportation Systems (EDAPTS)”. The purpose of the field study was to make low-cost, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technologies readily available to small and medium size transit properties. The system developed applies digital communications links, open source designs, solar powered real-time arrival signs, and innovative data links to improve transit service and safety at a total investment of $150,000 (2007 dollars). An evaluation was …

Vehicle Emissions And Level Of Service Standards: Exploratory Analysis Of The Effects Of Traffic Flow On Vehicle Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Rafael Cobina, Tony Henderson, Sudeshna Mitra, Cornelius Nuworsoo, Edward Sullivan Jan 2009

Vehicle Emissions And Level Of Service Standards: Exploratory Analysis Of The Effects Of Traffic Flow On Vehicle Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Rafael Cobina, Tony Henderson, Sudeshna Mitra, Cornelius Nuworsoo, Edward Sullivan

City and Regional Planning

Many local jurisdictions seek to preserve adequate infrastructure by enacting level of service (LOS) policies for proposed new development. Understanding the relationship between roadway LOS policies and greenhouse gas emissions is an important step towards reducing the emissions related to global climate change. By influencing the evolution of urban infrastructure, these LOS standards can have a significant impact on the type and character of vehicle trips made and the subsequent emissions released. Currently, most jurisdictions establish LOS threshold policies based solely on operational standards and rarely consider the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions. Using a travel demand forecasting model for …

A Critical Spatial Analysis Of Residential Planning In Makkah, Saudi Arabia, Ibrahim Alkhaldy Jan 2009

A Critical Spatial Analysis Of Residential Planning In Makkah, Saudi Arabia, Ibrahim Alkhaldy

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The housing situation in Makkah presents significant challenges for its residents and non-residents who visit the city. These problems include crowded housing, narrow streets, insufficient parking, and strained public servies. However, the government has taken some steps in improving conditions in the city by launching several projects to divide the land more evenly so that the population density will be reduced. The government also plans to provide more sources of waters, sewers, and electricity. The ultimate goal is to make Makkah and the holy city a place where it is comfortable to live without the impending fear of shortages of …

Replacing The Plaza, Timothy Jeremiah Nolan Jan 2009

Replacing The Plaza, Timothy Jeremiah Nolan

Architecture Thesis Prep

"This project uses the methods of scanning implicated by the skateboarder in a detournement of the modernist plaza. In doing so, it seeks to prove that universality is not universal. Ultimately, by reframing Mies van der Rohe's Neue Nationalgalarie in Berlin as field of spatial data through methods of scanning related to skateboarding, new ways of understanding Mies' plaza will point to a spatial reorganization of the museum and plaza."

Fixed - Flow: The Emergent Library, Laura Elizabeth Swartz Jan 2009

Fixed - Flow: The Emergent Library, Laura Elizabeth Swartz

"Traditional academic library have been concerned with physically containing institutional collections. However, today we see a paradigm shift in knowledge transfer, a digital wave sweeping book and periodical collections off the shelves of these centralized containers to offsite storage warehouses...

"The Emergent Library will re-define and activate a current academic library (and the 'Learning Commons') by embracing technology - both physical hardware and digital models (web 2.0 and 3.0) in concept and structure - which allow for the following:

[1] Networked management of perpetual real-time flow of knowledge

[2] User generated experiential spaces

[3] Barrier free access to emergent knowledge …

Peripheral Architecture, James Utterback Jan 2009

Peripheral Architecture, James Utterback

Architecture Thesis Prep

"By 2012 the 4G 'Anytime, Aywhere' digital age will be upon us and the air will be loaded with new possibilities for those with the hardware to tap into it. In the latter half of the 20th century, screen-mediated technologies generated an abundance of hybrid local/peripheral places. Movie screens, televisions, and computers challenged notions of privacy, location, and place by stretching people across the screen and into the screenspace. Where screens became pervasive the architecture became passive, often acting as an experiential shield from the local space, wholly privileging the space of the screen over the context in which we …

Macarthur Park Master Plan, Community Design Center Jan 2009

Macarthur Park Master Plan, Community Design Center

Community Design Center Project Reports

Like waterfronts and transit stops, parks leverage value in urban areas. While much recent attention has been given to the signature mega-park, the value of the small-scale neighborhood park in reinventing the city has been overlooked. Once connecting neighborhoods of differing character, and sponsoring more than 80 residential structures along its edges, the historic MacArthur Park at the edge of downtown Little Rock is radically underutilized as an urban neighborhood asset. Severed from its neighborhoods along two edges by interstate construction in the 1960s, this moribund 40-acre municipal park is left with only 16 residential structures along its frontage. The …

Preserving Assets In At-Risk Municipalities: Financial Strategies For Climate Change Adaptation, New England Environmental Finance Center Jan 2009

Preserving Assets In At-Risk Municipalities: Financial Strategies For Climate Change Adaptation, New England Environmental Finance Center

Climate Change

A large share of America's population, businesses and economic activity now occurs in coastal areas. At the same time, during this century many coastal communities are likely to be severely impacted by sea level rise and increased storm surge and tidal flooding.

“What to do” about this vulnerability is the subject of this brief. It is intended to help municipalities identify courses of action and steps they might take toward increasing their resilience, especially regarding financial resources that will need to be allocated toward the various strategies identified.
