Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
If society shows the need for a re-engagement with its surrounding nature in order to develop conscious environmental decisions, then a pre-kindergarten through fifth grade school, with the careful design and testing of materials, courtyards, and circulation strategy, will be the vehicle through which everyday decisions are taught at the earliest age.
Problem | Statistics | 20 percent of Americans go to school every day, equating to 55 million students and nearly 5 million teachers and staff. More than 25 percent of those students and teachers are going to school in inadequate facilities where their health is at risk.[1] …
The B Street Residence Biophilic Design And The Colorado Home, Colin E. Fanning
The B Street Residence Biophilic Design And The Colorado Home, Colin E. Fanning
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The main focus of this Capstone has been exploratory—self-educational. After having learned, during the course of my studies in interior design, about the methodology of biophilic design (literally, “life-loving”)—which deals with the human psychological affinity for the natural world and attempting to reconcile that with the built environment, in order to create spaces that protect both body and mind—I wanted to experiment within that philosophy, to build my own biophilic design skills. This matched well with my long-running passion for sustainable design—the two methodologies are distinct but closely related, and when used in concert they represent a progressive vision for …
Rammed Earth Architecture's Journey To The High Hills Of The Santee, Jessica Golebiowski
Rammed Earth Architecture's Journey To The High Hills Of The Santee, Jessica Golebiowski
All Theses
Rammed earth, a form of earthen architecture and construction that has been used for thousands of years, has gone through periods of resurgence and decline. Its modern era rediscovery through practice and publications during the late 18th and early 19th century was fueled by writers and practitioners who disseminated the ideas of pisé starting in France extending to England and eventually to other European countries and the United States. Once these ideas reached America, farmers and intellectuals alike were interested in this simple yet durable means of construction.
Rammed earth ideas, while intellectualized in Europe, originated from practice in Africa …
Organization By Form: Applying Systems Theory To Urbanization, Michael Patrick Howe
Organization By Form: Applying Systems Theory To Urbanization, Michael Patrick Howe
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
I have come to believe that the core of our declining physical, mental and community health dwells in the current practice of land use based development. Although today's land use codes began as a legitimate response to protect people's health and welfare it has since devolved into an unsustainable process. The failure of land-use zoning is rooted in an informational disconnect created by the segregation of land into distinct uses while offering generic design standards. Whereas the current mode of land use-based zoning results in an unpredictable physical form, Form-Based Codes foster a connection between the individual to the available …
Architecture And Nostalgia In The British Modern Novel, Heather Lynn Lusty
Architecture And Nostalgia In The British Modern Novel, Heather Lynn Lusty
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This dissertation focuses on Modern British literary culture and the construction of literary sites of nostalgia through architecture and landscape. The project considers examples from D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, Ford Madox Ford, and Evelyn Waugh, and examines how these authors employ presentations of architecture in their narratives to portray the irrevocably altered landscape of modernity.
The introduction presents the notion of national consciousness and literature, moving from Lukacs' conception of the historical novel to Victorian art critics John Ruskin and Walter Pater and their writings on national identity and architecture. Twentieth-century European culture responded to the trauma of the Great …
Preserving Preeminence Amidst Revitilization: The Role Of The Tharp House In The Restoration Of Falmouth, Jamaica, Matthew Pelz
Preserving Preeminence Amidst Revitilization: The Role Of The Tharp House In The Restoration Of Falmouth, Jamaica, Matthew Pelz
Master of Science in Historic Preservation Terminal Projects
In November of 2008, after years of negotiation, the Port Authority of Jamaica reached an agreement with Royal Caribbean to authorize the construction of a pier in the harbor of Falmouth, Jamaica. Respected for its collection of colonial architecture, Falmouth became slated as a “heritage destination” offering an alternative to the well-known Caribbean cruise experiences. However, the project is not a mere pilot program. The $224 million cost represented an incredible investment by the Jamaican government and Royal Caribbean has promised 400,000 visitors annually, a figure that would rank the town among the most frequented Caribbean cruise destinations.
After early …

National Culture And Entertainment Center: Iconographic Architecture, Hung Quoc Le
Architecture Theses and Projects
The building I design will be an icon, a landmark to publicize my hometown, (a now thriving Ho Chi Minh City, formerly called Saigon), to celebrate friendly Vietnamese people and the country of Vietnam in general. The reality of Vietnam and Vietnamese life is quite different now from the image of Vietnam in the past. This new image of the Vietnamese culture will be publicized through a series of projections in spaces, on surfaces, in the transformation into form, or by more conventional displayed photos of different periods of time.

This project proposes a Centre, an architectural space that will help the people of Haiti, (many of whom live in and around the city), while also educating and engaging others in Haitian culture and reality. This Centre includes a combination of programmatic elements within an appropriate urban setting. The site of this project is in Boston’s Back Bay at the intersection of Commonwealth Ave and Clarendon Street, in between Copley Square and the Boston Commons. With the objective of raising public awareness, this site has the ideal balance between the tourist and local community use. This Centre
Planning For Coastal Community Resiliency: A Case Study Analysis Of South Carolina Beachfront Communities, Ida Wood
All Theses
Because dynamic coastal processes and hazards threaten the resiliency of coastal communities throughout the United States, hazard mitigation and coastal management policies are constantly evolving. While various agencies throughout all levels of government have attempted to mitigate the impacts of coastal hazards, it is difficult for local communities to converge the separate requirements of state and federal agencies. Because there are many land use planning and hazard mitigation steps involved in building resiliency, this manuscript attempts to combine the hazard mitigation knowledge of a wide array of practitioners, researchers, and visionaries to develop a comprehensive land use model that integrates …

The Animated Work Environment: A Vision For Working Life In A Digital Society, Henrique Houayek
All Dissertations
Dramatic transformations in the nature, place and organization of working life due to increasing sophistication and access of information technologies in the United States suggest a redesign of the work environment as a socially and technologically responsive system occupying both home and office.
This thesis examines the process of creation of an 'Animated Work Environment' [AWE]. A space in the scale of a cubicle envisioned as an environment-as-responsive-robot; an articulated, programmable interior accommodating a range of digital technologies across fluid assemblages of people working with both printed and digital materials in a variety of locations and settings, searching for a …

Rapid Prototyping In Design Education: A Comparative Study Of Rapid Prototyping And Traditional Model Construction, Scott D. Greenhalgh
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
To evaluate the effectiveness of a rapid prototyping into a curriculum, a study was conducted requiring students to conceive a design and create a model. Students were randomly selected to be given access to the rapid prototype or to create the models by hand. The students' models were evaluated on scale, design, and craftsmanship. Students participated in a survey consisting of perceptions of design feedback and difficulties as well as interests and affective traits. The study utilized qualitative data investigating the instructors' perceptions prior to implementing rapid prototyping into the curriculum and its correlation to observed events.

From SRI test results, a model for intervention will be built to meet the students' …
Development Of A Survey Measuring Visitor Satisfaction And Service Quality Of Cultural And Natural Sites In Belize, Dustin S. Wiberg
Development Of A Survey Measuring Visitor Satisfaction And Service Quality Of Cultural And Natural Sites In Belize, Dustin S. Wiberg
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The literature suggests that a correlation exists between visitor satisfaction and a visitor's choice to re-experience a product. The higher one's satisfaction level, the more likely he/she is to experience the product again and/or provide positive word-of-mouth advertising to friends and family. The Tian-Cole and Crompton model was chosen because of its acknowledgment and explanation of the differences between Visitor Satisfaction (VS) and Service Quality (SQ) and how their relationship influences satisfaction and contributes to Future Destination Selection.
In addition to identifying a theoretical framework that explains why visitors return, it was necessary to identify a survey methodology to be …

Indoor Outdoor Relationships At The Residential Scale, Benjamin H. George
Indoor Outdoor Relationships At The Residential Scale, Benjamin H. George
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The indoor-outdoor relationship has been important to mankind since the dawn of recorded history. Over the ages, and despite continual changes in culture, style and technology, the relationship has continued to endure and play an important role in the design and construction of both interior and exterior spaces. Despite its continued relevance little research has been done on the relationship.
This thesis examines the indoor-outdoor relationship in three distinct sections. The first section defines the relationship and discusses the various theoretical merits of the relationship. The second section is a broad overview of the historical treatment of the indoor-outdoor relationship. …

Constructing A Living Surface: City Hall As Connective Tissue, Benjamin Grace
Constructing A Living Surface: City Hall As Connective Tissue, Benjamin Grace
Architecture Thesis Prep
"Infrastructural space offers a model for architecture which is not closed and self-contained, but expansive, continuous, and referential beyond itself. A healthy urban landscape can be produced by buildings that serve to construct sites which expand into the city, giving expression to the role of the urban surface."
Dispurbia, Daniel Kimicata

Architecture Thesis Prep
"This thesis aims to produce an architectural response to sprawl in the United States without privileging either the traditional city or the exurb. The project rejects the notion that the exurb is separate from the city and therefore looks to produce a response informed through an analysis of the urban condition in general."

School of Architecture - Theses
There have been many projections of a utopian society where all should have access to humanity's total body of knowledge. With that knowledge, the people would be granted power: But in fact, not many have access to the kind of knowledge that produces power; and many who do don't know how to use it. Knowledge is only power if you control it.
In Washington D.C., a priviledged group of political consultants, the lobbyists, have slowly and steadily gained a tremendous amount of power through their control of information needed by private citizens, corporations, and elected officials. Always the middleman, the …

Sustainable Portland: Implementation Series 2, New England Environmental Finance Center
Climate Change
The Portland Municipal Climate Change Working Group prepared a report in March 2008 that outlined several recommendations as a commitment by the City to address greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) produced during daily municipal operations. The Municipal Climate Action Plan was written in partnership with Clean Air – Cool Planet and Portland officials, and acknowledges under Recommendation #2 that an employee energy efficiency program would provide significant positive impact on the City’s reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Best practices from three cities show that focus on the greening of City Hall is critical in developing a program that promotes partnerships, community …

Architecture Senior Theses
"The flip book, a device for viewing moving images, has unique characteristics that can be analyzed and translated into the built environment. In order to understand what is truly unique about FLIP_pace, the flip book moving image needs to be analyzed in contrast to the cinematic moving image to see where one form of media ends and the other beings. Based on the analysis of the flip book, the most conductive architectural space is the elevator. The speed of the elevator, the proximity of the image, the potential for human interaction, and the ability to control views are the primary …
Replacing The Plaza, Timothy Jeremiah Nolan
Replacing The Plaza, Timothy Jeremiah Nolan
Architecture Senior Theses
"The modernist plaza is a site of multiplicity. Through intense and informed scanning, alternative orders latent within these constructions are revealed. This project uses these latent orders to propose a series of alternate realities that find productive potential in the failures of modernist architecture to fully manage factors such as construction, weathering, and occupation."
