Spotlight On Construction: Georgia Gwinnett College Prepares To Build Academic Library, Joy Garmon, Gene Ruffin

The article reports on the construction of Georgia Gwinnett College's (GGC) academic library. The current library space is housed on two open floors within the Signature Building. A new, stand-alone building will be needed to meet all of the needs of the new college. GGC established the Library Planning Group in 2006. The new library will incorporate concepts and services that have been successful in other facilities. The goal of the project is that the library will become a learning center for the entire college community.

"The informal brand aims to become a process of design that answers questions of identity in architecture. By establishing a methodology for design with an emphasis on program context and performance, a building will be able to become a "brand" for the company it represents, the context the project is situated in, and the typology of program it represents. The following pages set out to document this design process through site and program analysis derived from case studies and text reference. The preceding analysis will result in a speculation of programmatic relationships and there implications on the site."

Wrongly Accused Redux: How Race Contributes To Convicting The Innocent: The Informants Example, Andrew E. Taslitz

This article analyzes five forces that may raise the risk of convicting the innocent based upon the suspect's race: the selection, ratchet, procedural justice, bystanders, and aggressive-suspicion effects. In other words, subconscious forces press police to focus more attention on racial minorites, the ratchet makes this focus every-increasing, the resulting sense by the community of unfair treatment raises its involvment in crime while lowering its willingness to aid the police in resisting crime, innocent persons suffer when their skin color becomes associated with criminality, and the police use more aggressive techniques on racial minorities in a way that raises the …

Continuous Commissioning^® (CC^®) strategies include reducing simultaneous heating and cooling, scheduling the facility’s occupancy needs, utilizing free cooling, and minimizing excessive supply air and outside air. Most significantly, this demandbased control energy conservation strategy can facilitate mechanical system performance at near optimal conditions through the gradual advancement of control systems and the ability of upstream systems reading the status of downstream systems.

The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast the current practices of citizen involvement in community tourism planning with the framework of deliberative democracy. The goal of this study was to expand the literature on tourism planning which currently lacks a working framework for participatory community tourism planning. Drawing from political philosophy, democratic theory, and planning literature, this study utilized the framework of deliberative democracy and planning as communicative action, in order to contribute to the development of a model of participatory community tourism planning.

A multi-zone air-handling unit was popular several decades ago due to the convenience of small sized modular units, which were inexpensive to install and easily maintained in a mechanical room. The cost and convenience proved to be of little benefit as the units perform poorly from an energy usage perspective. A “three-deck” multi-zone unit is a hybrid of its kind, and it can be very efficient when controlled properly. Henderson Library has been the hub of academic life at Georgia Southern University for more than 30 years. Spotlight On Construction: Hall County Prepares For Opening Of Spout Springs Branch

The article announces that the Spout Springs Branch of the Hall County Library System in Georgia is tentatively scheduled to open in late spring 2008. The budget for the project will total approximately $6 million and will be located in Flowery Branch at the corner of Spout Springs Road and Lake Sterling Boulevard. Pope Partners of Roswell is the architectural firm for the project. Scroggs and Grizzel Contracting Inc. of Gainesville managed the construction. Some special highlights of the facility include a large computer lab and a dedicated storytime room.

The article reports on the expansion of the Chickamauga Public Library, a branch of the Cherokee Regional Library System in Georgia. It has experienced such growth in programming and book collections that an expansion was greatly needed. The city of Chickamauga, upon the recommendation of John Culpepper, city utilities manager, allocated $100,000 of local special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) funds for the expansion and redesign of the library. Library manager Bobbie Abernathy lobbied to bring about public awareness of the expansion need and to secure local and state funding.

This project explores the concept of school-centered community as a key aspect in assisting urban renewal through architecture. It employs this concept through the architectural design of a middle school in Baltimore, Maryland that has a focus on music. The existing context of an urban site in the Oldtown area is analyzed to generate a solution to the area’s educational problems as well as to provide an urban renewal plan. Hedonic Housing Prices In Ciudad Juarez, Karen P. Fierro

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Studies of the valuation of housing attributes abound. Empirical studies of this nature for Latin America and Mexico are less common. This study utilizes data for 175 new houses in Ciudad Juarez to estimate a hedonic pricing model. All units in the sample were completed and sold between November 2006 and April 2007. For each house, a total of fourteen characteristics, both structural and locational, are employed as explanatory variables. Empirical results indicate that the structural characteristics play a bigger role than the neighborhood amenities. Surprisingly, neighborhood parks are found to lower housing values

Spotlight On Construction: St. Simons' Library Welcomed 70th Anniversary In New Facility

The article announces the grand opening event of the St. Simons Public Library in Georgia in January 2007. The library also celebrated its 70th anniversary on March 16. According to Libby Hogan, chair of the library's board of directors, they have 1,200 extra square feet of space in the renovated building. St. Simons joined the Three Rivers Public Library System (TRRLS) and PINES (Public Information Network for Electronic Services), bringing its patrons access to more than 8.5 million items owned by other PINES member libraries. The library currently has approximately 35,000 volumes, according to manager Maureen Hersey.
