Cultural Site Stewardship Program

• Stewards have been assigned sites in the Desert National Wildlife Range for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

• The CSSP has expanded into the Laughlin area, the southernmost region of Nevada, the last stage of five designated stewardship areas in Clark County.

• Two basic training classes were conducted, adding 33 new site stewards.

• Stewards reported a total of 63 significant site impacts for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2007, as opposed to 51 significant impacts for the same period last year.

• Creation of a CSSP relational database is underway.

• Annual reports are being …

Thinking Outside The Box: New Approaches To Very Large Flexible Diaphragms, John W. Lawson

This paper discusses the past design practices of flexible diaphragms, the current trend to very large diaphragms, and the new tools available to properly evaluate and engineer these large roof systems. Higher shear demands are accommodated by higher plywood/OSB and steel deck shear capacities accepted by the IBe. A new collective chord technique is presented to more accurately reflect large diaphragm behavior. In addition, these very large diaphragms have significant lateral deflection issues that can now be evaluated in the IBC. Expansive clays exhibit high potential for volume change when changes in soil moisture occur. It has been estimated that the annual cost of damage to facilities built on expansive clay in the United States exceeds $9 billion. the use of soil suction measurements to predict potential clay volume changes has shown significant promise, yet the currently utilized method to determine soil suction, the filter paper method, has serious drawbacks. First, the test takes approximately 8 days to complete, making it less than practical for broad use by practicing engineers. Second, and more troublesome, the filter paper test is difficult to …

This paper links the study of olfaction and autobiographical memory with the practices of reminiscence therapy and landscape architecture, with the goal of bringing this life-enhancing therapy into the garden. Smells have proven to be powerful stimulators of early, emotional childhood memories due to the structure and evolution of the human brain. Research shows improved self-esteem, less depression and better social integration in older adults who are able to call up autobiographical memories in the process of reminiscence therapy. Therefore, landscape architects designing gardens for the elderly in long-term care could include aromatic plants and construction materials, chosen either to …

From the Highway Beautification of Lady Bird Johnson in the 1960's to the environmental issues of today, designers are focused on ways to incorporate native plant material in the roadside. Design of foundations in earthquake prone areas needs special considerations. Shallow foundations may experience a reduction in bearing capacity and increase in settlement and tilt due to seismic loading. the reduction in bearing capacity depends on the nature and type of soil and ground acceleration parameters. in the case of piles, the soil-pile behavior under earthquake loading is generally non-linear. the nonlinearity must be accounted for by defining soil-pile stiffness in terms of strain dependent soil modulus. Several behavioral and design aspects of shallow foundations and pile groups subjected to earthquakes have been critically reviewed. Copyright ASCE 2007.

This is the first volume of publications of the Bet She’an Archaeological Project, describing the large-scale IAA excavations at the site of Bet She’an, ancient Nysa-Scythopolis, during 1986–2002. The excavations were followed by vast preservation and development works. This first volume describes the stratigraphy and architecture of the Caesareum and Odeum, erected within the monumental Roman–Byzantine civic center of the city, as well as the Hellenistic-Roman pottery and architectural elements.

My talk today will be about my own thoughts regarding architecture education. My intention is not dictate a method for others to follow, but rather to open up a discussion of a topic that is central to many of us. I will begin with the findings of a study made by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching on architecture education known as the Boyer Report. An orchestra can be simulated in room acoustics computer modelling using a variety of methods, ranging from a single omni-directional source to individual sources of all instruments.  This study utilizes the method of individual sources for each instrument, but with reduced source representation for the string sections.  The anechoic recordings used in this investigation are five-channel recordings, which capture the source directivity of the individual instruments.  For each string section, the individual anechoic recordings were phase shifted several times, up to 23 ms, and combined to create a single recording for use in the simulations.  An orchestra was simulated in …

Sound reflections from most finite surfaces, such as overhead reflector panels, include a component known as edge diffraction. Edge diffraction is the scattered energy required to maintain a continuous sound field despite the discontinuity in acoustical impedance presented by the scatterer. Edge diffraction can interfere with primary scattered energy to produce comb filtering at receiver locations. Several decades ago, the effect of changing the edge profile of loudspeaker boxes was investigated with the goal of producing a smoother frequency response. Tilt-up construction is one of the most ubiquitous forms of commercial construction in many parts of the country. Thanks to its efficient wall and roof systems, more than 700 million ft² (65 million m²) of tilt-up buildings were constructed in the U.S. in 2006.¹
Tilt-up's current popularity is even more remarkable considering that it wasn't until the 1980s that building codes began to recognize the unique design of slender tilt-up wall panels. Computer modeling of room acoustics is a useful tool in the design of acoustically sensitive spaces and an important outcome from these programs is auralizations.  This study examined the perceived changes in realism and source width when listening to multi-channel auralizations compared to single channel auralizations for both solo instruments and a full orchestra.  The first experiment, which examined subjective judgments of auralizations made from solo instruments, showed that perceived realism increased as the number of channels was increased from one to four to thirteen, while the relationship between source width and number of channels was less clear.
