Field City Vs. Flexibuild, Benjamin R. Brabec

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

The project proposes a flexible module design for downtown Lincoln, Nebraska. It seeks to fill in urban gaps and reactivate a downtown area, dominated by wide streets, open lots, and and 2 to 3 story buildings. There is an abundance of open gray space used mainly for parking (22,600 stalls). Modular construction systems, common in exhibition and fair designs, are employed; these can be altered and arranged to accommodate changing situations. The base module is 9 x 18 feet, based on the size of a parking stall. It can be subdivided and equipped with glass, solid infill, shading, seating, boxes, …

Lessons Learned From Failures Of The Building Envelope In Windstorms, Joseph E. Minor Mar 2005

Lessons Learned From Failures Of The Building Envelope In Windstorms, Joseph E. Minor

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Lessons learned from failures of the building envelope in windstorms are encapsulated in three principal findings. the building envelope is crucial to the performance of buildings in windstorms. Windborne debris is decisive in shaping the performance of the building envelope. Design attention should be given to postimpact behavior of building-envelope systems. Reviews of damage documentation, insurance records, and computer simulations of building failures establish the importance of the building envelope to satisfactory building performance. These reviews also establish the decisive role of windborne debris in causing damage. the imperative for considering the postimpact behavior of building envelope systems is discussed, …

The Waqf In Relation To Maintenance And Repair: The Medieval Sources And Their Uses For Contemporary Practices, Dina Ishak Bakhoum Feb 2005

The Waqf In Relation To Maintenance And Repair: The Medieval Sources And Their Uses For Contemporary Practices, Dina Ishak Bakhoum

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The buildings of the different Islamic dynasties in Egypt with their great cultural and aesthetic significance have survived and remained functional despite numerous natural as well as man-made disasters. This was possible not only because of the high structural engineering knowledge and construction techniques with which they were built, but also due to the existence of the waqf system, which was not merely a system of endowments for charitable and pious causes, such as constructing mosques and schools but also a system concerned with maintenance and repair. Its main aim was the upkeep of the charitable act and the benefit …

Activating The Void, Karissa Kizer Jan 2005

Activating The Void, Karissa Kizer

Architecture Thesis Prep

Syracuse, New York contains an abundance of voids created by transportation infrastructure. Interstate 81 runs north-south through the city, connecting with Interstate 690 and eventually to the New York State thruway. I-81 exists in the city as an overpass, a barrier which effectively slices the city in two. Each half of the city contains a major productive zone, though the area in between the two, the district surround the highway, exists as both a physical and programmatic void. Within this area, there are numerous specific voids, most in the form of parking facilities which can be used to explore the …
