The Downtown Planning Process: An Analysis Of The Albuquerque Experience, David Walter Klein Dec 1974

The Downtown Planning Process: An Analysis Of The Albuquerque Experience, David Walter Klein

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The thesis began with the question: What process is involved in the shaping of downtown Albuquerque? Consequently, an inductive pattern of research was used in gathering information. For the most part, this information came from a number of Albuquerque City Planning Reports and studies, Urban Renewal Reports, personal interviews, and field inspection.

The findings indicate that the downtown has been in a continuous state of change throughout its history of development. These changes have taken place in an incremental and continuous manner being modified and altered by trends and influences of the time. An area in change such as this …

An Investigation Of Creativity In The Practicing Field Of Architecture: A Case Study Of Seven Albuquerque Architects, Robert Jenner Philips Dec 1974

An Investigation Of Creativity In The Practicing Field Of Architecture: A Case Study Of Seven Albuquerque Architects, Robert Jenner Philips

Architecture and Planning ETDs

One of architecture's most cherished foundations is the notion of creativity. If the architect is to be charged with the responsibility of the "innovator" and an "agent of change," then much of his work will revolve around being able to exercise his creativity. There appear to be some discrepancies between what architecture is all about in literature and the classroom vis-a-vis in actual practice. The thrust of this thesis is directed to the apparent discrepancy between architectural training and practice. A case study method has been chosen for this investigation. Seven architects were chosen to be interviewed. With five areas …

The Patio House: An Alternative Housing Form For The U.S. Southwest, Frederick L. Swetland Iii Dec 1974

The Patio House: An Alternative Housing Form For The U.S. Southwest, Frederick L. Swetland Iii

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This thesis sets out to tell the reader just why a patio style house is a legitimate alternative to the present housing forms that are being built.

1. It goes into the historical background of the building type and shows how ancient peoples responded to many of the same shaping forces that are coming to bear on present day building styles.

2. The study touches on the sociological ramifications of urban growth and how the patio house offers a better remedy than the present housing types being pandered.

3. It touches on the economics of building patio houses, and summarily …

An Examination Of Mud Brick Architectural Forms In Iran With Experimental Applications In The Southwestern United States, Paul Graham Mchenry Jr. Dec 1974

An Examination Of Mud Brick Architectural Forms In Iran With Experimental Applications In The Southwestern United States, Paul Graham Mchenry Jr.

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Mud, in a variety of forms, is the oldest and most widely used building material in the world. Its uses in various ways, and the logical development of extremely sophisticated architectural forms occurred independently in many parts of the world. The complexity of the forms that were developed were dependent on the length of time the material was in use, and the local environment which limited possibilities and created the necessity for particular uses. As social and intellectual patterns become more complex, with the attendant prosperity, accumulation of wealth, ostentation, and other aspects of a more complex social order, the …

An Enlightening View Of Design Appointed In Georg Simmel's Philosophy Of Life, Syh-Hai Liang Jul 1974

An Enlightening View Of Design Appointed In Georg Simmel's Philosophy Of Life, Syh-Hai Liang

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This study is concerned with the fundamental issues in architecture. The proposed perspective is visualized from a philosophical point of view which is central in the thoughts of Georg Simmel, a German sociologist and philosopher. Intrinsically speaking, architecture belongs to a kind of II form-giving" activity. As such, architeicture brings about physical intermediaries to facilitate the realization of human purposes in other aspects of culture.

The argument is introduced by reconciling “form" and

''function” with each other. In essence, the two notions refer to one entity; Wright asserts: "form and function are one." It is contended that the primary concern …

Meaning In Architecture - A Case Study, Michael Vitsentzatos Jul 1974

Meaning In Architecture - A Case Study, Michael Vitsentzatos

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The aim of this thesis is to study the following relationships.

1. The relationship between the process of attribution of meaning to architectural forms and the social and cultural context in which they occur,

2. The relationship of architecture as a system of meaning to this same social and cultural context,

3. The role of the architect in relation to the above,

In order to do that we are using the concepts of structural semiology, the aim of which is the study of collective representations. We are applying these concepts in an analysis of the reactions of the residents of …

A Survey Of Selected Environmental Groups Active In New Mexico And The Southwest, Spring 1974, May Louise Holbrook

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The operations of seven environmental groups which are currently active in New Mexico and Colorado are discussed, including their history, successes, and failures. Structure, financial support, and individual priorities are described in detail, as well as response to social and racial issues. A common thread in the testimony of surveyed executives has been the declaration of need for dedicated personnel to broaden the activities of the organizations. Comparisons and contrasts in the groups' operations are pointed out for those who seek environmental information and data and for those who may be interested in working with such groups.

A Feasibility Study For Apartments, Roger Easley Jun 1974

A Feasibility Study For Apartments, Roger Easley

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This study seeks to provide a method which can be used to obtain the information necessary for the design of apartments within the limitations imposed by prevailing market conditions, financial considerations and investor needs. This is accomplished by presenting first, a method of market analysis designed to determine if a market exists in a given locality and delineating specifics about that market which would affect the design. A method is also developed for translating the market conditions into a form which wold indicate whether or not a proposed apartment project is economically feasible and what its probable value would be …

Architectural Energy Conservation Design: Mechanical System Manipulation For Solar Application To Multi-Story Construction, Donald Killough Fitzgerald May 1974

Architectural Energy Conservation Design: Mechanical System Manipulation For Solar Application To Multi-Story Construction, Donald Killough Fitzgerald

Architecture and Planning ETDs

At the very time the world economy, particularly the economies of the industrialized countries, is becoming increasingly dependent on the consumption of energy, there is a growing realization that the main sources of this energy, the earth's nonrenewable fossil fuel reserves, will inevitably be exhausted. The eventual solution to this energy problem depends not only on developing alternative sources of energy but also on devising new methods of energy conversion. Solar energy is diffuse, but its abundance makes it a major energy resource for the United States and for the world. Being an incoming source of energy, solar energy is …

Residential Infill Development In The City Of Albuquerque, Bruce Alan Briggs May 1974

Residential Infill Development In The City Of Albuquerque, Bruce Alan Briggs

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Rapid expansion took place in the City of Albuquerque, New Mexico from 1950 through 1970. The new developments often occurred some distance away from the existing city. This pattern of growth has resulted in vacant, undeveloped parcels of land scattered throughout the city. These undeveloped areas reveal the economic disadvantages of annexing new land to the existing city limits when so much vacant land is available for development within.

There are three major problem areas which discuss possible methods for prompting residential development on some of these vacant parcels. Problem area number one discusses one method for lowering land costs …

It will identify typical problem areas that can be resolved by the Landscape Architect through the practical application of landscape architecture principles, the design use and influence of plant material, topography, and the environment. Design criteria will then be formulated for the site development of steam electric …

Antelope Island Study: Guidelines For Recreational Land Use Planning For Antelope Island, Utah, Using Computer Techniques, Robert D. Scott Jr. May 1974

Antelope Island Study: Guidelines For Recreational Land Use Planning For Antelope Island, Utah, Using Computer Techniques, Robert D. Scott Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Throughout the history of traditional land use planning, justification for allocating a land use for a particular area has been accomplished generally in a debilitated fashion. For example, decisions have generally been arrived at by (1) political process--incorporating fringe areas into present land use patterns, or (2) short-term revenue producers are given a land use change from a tax base incentive, or (3) revelations implemented, or other subjective justifications. Except in very few instances, data used to base land use planning decisions was not accurately interpreted for adequate input or not even gathered.

Recently, new and innovative methods for land …

Involver And Facilitator Environments: A Concept Of Environment With Behavioral Implications, Richard Mcrae Jul 1973

Involver And Facilitator Environments: A Concept Of Environment With Behavioral Implications, Richard Mcrae

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This thesis begins with the assumption that environment and human behavior are two interacting components of any milieu. It is suggested that the social sciences (particularly psychology and sociology) have researched many of the relationships between environment and behavior, but primarily from a behavioral or social perspective. This thesis suggests that environmental design requires concepts of environment which relate to behavior, rather than concepts of behavior which relate to environment.

The major purpose of this thesis has been to translate behavioral data into environmental concepts which can be used by designers as design tools. Following the methodology outlined by Glaser …

Solar Space And Water Heating For Domestic Use; A Guide For The Architect, Jack L. Thorpe May 1973

Solar Space And Water Heating For Domestic Use; A Guide For The Architect, Jack L. Thorpe

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Increased emphasis on the limited quantity of fossil fuel reserves has aroused interest in the use of solar energy as a possible solution to the "energy crisis" facing the citizens of the world today. An architect should understand all the possible heating systems for structures in order to reduce the use of energy. Solar energy heating for houses is a field in which few architects are well versed. It has been thought of as an engineering problem, but design is a large part of finding economically feasible and adequate solutions to solar heated structures. Bright sunshine delivers to the surface …

A Case Study For Rural Revitalization, Gerald Donald Percifield May 1973

A Case Study For Rural Revitalization, Gerald Donald Percifield

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Since the industrial revolution, there has been a steady outmigration from rural areas into the urban centers. The decrease of economic activity in rural America, caused by the mechanization of farming techniques, the increased size of farms and the centralization of manufacturing and industrial processes, has led to this continuous out-migration. Now, in the early seventies, we find that migration from rural to urban has overcrowded, polluted and congested these urban areas and left most of America vacant. This thesis attempts to show that a rural life-style is possible and that the problems that caused the migration from rural areas …

Solar Energy For Tract Housing, Roy S. Brown May 1973

Solar Energy For Tract Housing, Roy S. Brown

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The United States, as well as other countries, is facing an energy crisis whose impact has already begun to be felt. The energy we use daily as utilities and take for granted in our homes has begun to run short. If present trends of production and consumption of energy continue, there will not be enough to power our homes by the end of this century.

The technology is already available to harness solar energy for individual (or multiple) dwellings for use as hot water, space heat, and air conditioning. Solar water heaters are available commercially on a small scale. Solar …

Community Performing Arts Centres For Small Cities In New Mexico, Timothy C. Christensen May 1973

Community Performing Arts Centres For Small Cities In New Mexico, Timothy C. Christensen

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Often in the process of developing a performing arts centre, decisions are made that affect the physical form of the facility before an architect has been selected. The reasons for this vary. The client (or clients) may have definite ideas about the facility and feel that he does not need an architect's help in making a program. Sometimes, the client wants a facility just like the facility in a neighboring community and only needs the architect to make a copy. Often, community "experts" such as the high school drama teacher, or the president of the community concert association, are used …

This is a research exercise to produce and bring to light the most important user requirements for those major mammals upon whom we have imposed our reign. It may be a document to provide a means of change to remedy an ailing conscience of moral obligations to those other members of our earth family whom we have put in the zoos of the world. The author's purpose is not to belittle work completed or in progress at the many zoos but to provide a concise reference document for future architectural endeavors and a gauge for valid criticism. The need for …

Toward An Effective Design Paradigm, John F. Throne Ii May 1973

Toward An Effective Design Paradigm, John F. Throne Ii

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The design profession is not coping successfully with the increasing complexity which characterizes recent design problems. The standard method used by other disciplines/professions in dealing with this complexity is to abstract a problem in such a manner that problem solving techniques of proven effectiveness can be applied. Such techniques are not currently available to the design profession. However, the design profession is bound by a common culture to these other professions/disciplines and is, therefore, structured by common abstract principles. By elucidating these abstract principles, it will be possible to develop effective problem solving techniques for the design profession. In western …
